The last of the Oscar contenders to be released in the UK turns out to be one of the strongest. Sometimes the circumstances behind the making of a film shine through on the screen, and this story, with its lengthy birth, tiny budget and rushed schedule is a perfect example. It gives the film an urgency, a roughness and a pace that might not have been the case with a bigger budget, and it also ensure extremely committed performances from all concerned – they are doing it for love, not money. Matthew McConaughey Up For Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees

The rebirth of Matthew McConaughey continues. He recently scored his first Oscar nomination, and now he’s signed up for another role that will let his show off his acting chops. He’s set for Gus Van Sant’s drama Sea of Trees, alongside Ken Watanabe, according to TheWrap.

The film is set in the ‘Suicide Forest’ near Mount Fuji in Japan, following an American man (McConaughey) who heads their in order to take his own life. However his plan is interrupted by a Japanese man (Watanabe) who is trying to make his way out of the forest after having second thoughts about his own suicide. They go on a journey of reflection and survival.

Gus Van Sant is directing, working from a script by Chris Sparling (Buried) which landed on the 2013 Black List.

Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Hand Top Awards To 12 Years a Slave & Blue is the Warmest Color

After the recent announcement of the nominations, GALECA (Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association) has announced the winners of its annual Dorian Awards. They have handed Steve McQueen’s tragic slavery-era drama 12 Years a Slave the gong for Film of the Year, while Film Performance of the Year – Actor went to Matthew McConaughey for his work in Dallas Buyers Club as AIDS affected Ron Woodroof, and Cate Blanchett took Film Performance of the Year – Actress for her turn as a troubled socialite in Blue Jasmine.

GALECA also had plenty of love for Palm d’Or winner Blue is the Warmest Color. The French lesbian romance took both Foreign Language Film of the Year and LGBT Film of the Year. There was praise too for the extremely moving Bridegroom, which took Documentary of the Year. The film is a heartfelt and eye-opening expose of how inequalities in the legal system only add to the grief of LGBTs who have lost their life partner.

In the more unusual film categories, Kill Your Darlings, the fact-based biopic involving a young and wild Allen Ginsberg (played by Daniel Radcliffe) and Short Term 12, the provocative drama set at an at-risk center for teens, tied for Unsung Film of the Year. Gravity was chosen as Visually Striking Film. And Pedro Almodovar’s retro romp I’m So Excited! took Campy Flick honours.

On the TV front, GALECA picked Netflix’s women-in-prison dramedy Orange is the New Black in a tie along with HBO’s Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra as TV Drama of the Year. Orange also nabbed LGBT Drama of the Year, and one of its stars, Laverne Cox, was bestowed the group’s We’re Wilde About You Rising Star Award.

As previously announced, the group chose Lily Tomlin as the recipient of its special Timeless star tribute, given to ‘an actor or performer whose exemplary career is marked by character, wisdom and wit.’

Behind The Candelabra & Jared Leto Crown A Good Year For LGBTs At The Golden Globes

The Golden Globe winners have been announced, with the two top prizes going to 12 Years A Slave for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and American Hustle for Best Motion Picture (Musical Or Comedy).

It’s tough to tell which is the best indicator towards the Best Picture, as while normally it’s the Drama Globe that’s more likely to go onto Academy Awards success, that was actually the only award 12 Years won, while American Hustle also picked up two film actress gongs for Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence.

The other good indicator, the Best Director award, went to Gravity, suggesting it’s still a pretty open field for the Oscars.

It was a good year on the LGBT front, as Dallas Buyers Club picked up Best Actor (Drama) for Matthew McConaughey (whose character is straight but fighting for better access to HIV meds for all those affected) and Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto’s performance as a transgender character. Leo DiCaprio picked up the other Best Actor Award (Musical Or Comedy) for Wolf Of Wall Street.

On the TV front the gay-themed Behind The Candelabra also did well, picking up a couple of gongs, including Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television, and Best Actor for Michael Douglas.

There were a couple of disappointments, such as Taylor Schilling losing out for the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and Jim Parsons missing out for Big Bang Theory, but overall it was a pretty good year for films & TV that include LGBT content at the Golden Globes.

Liza Minnelli Says She’ll Give Matthew McConaughey Her Oscar If He Doesn’t Win His Own This Year

liza-minnelli Liza Minnelli likes The Dallas Buyers Club so much that she has started her own mini campaign to get the HIV-themed movie some Oscars. Nomination ballots are due on Wednesday, but yesterday as a New York Luncheon with Oscar voters, Minnelli turned up to toast the movie and wasn’t lacking in her praise for Matthew McConaughey.

THR reports that she told attendees, “I have nothing to do with this film except that I am a fan of how it was done, of the insight and the way they played these characters. And the fact that you were watching something that wasn’t necessarily comfortable but you could not stop watching. It drew you in, whether you wanted it to or not, and that’s magic. That’s magic. I mean, the last one [that did that for me] was ‘On the Waterfront.’ [laughs] You, crazy Matthew, losing all of that weight [pats her stomach] — it’s one thing to lose all of that weight and to look like that — that’s harrowing enough — but then to run like you did, with a body like that? And Jared, I mean, everything that you did — all of the placements, every single second — I felt wonderful for you, proud of you and sorry for you all at the same time, which I think one only feels for your friends. And Jennifer [Garner] was great — she was just f—ing great! [laughs] I don’t know what else to say. I haven’t seen a movie like that in so long, and I’m so proud to be able to tell everybody. And honey [addressing McConaughey], if you don’t win the Academy Award, I’m giving you mine!”

Liza of course won the Best Actress Oscar for Cabaret in 1973.

Interstellar Teaser Trailer – First look at Christopher Nolan’s latest

When the logo for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar arrived a couple of days ago, it came with the news that a teaser trailer would be incoming very soon. Now it’s here!

As it’s Nolan, it’s still being a bit secretive about the actual plot of the movie, although it does suggest something pretty epic.

Here’s the current official synopsis: ‘Interstellar chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.’

Logo Revealed For Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, With A Trailer Coming Soon

It’s just under a year until we can expect the next film from Christopher Nolan – Interstellar. Now Warner Bros. Pictures and Paramount Pictures have launched the official website for the film at Interstellarmovie.com, and along with that comes a first look at the logo. That’s ahead of a teaser trailer that’s expected to play alongside The Hobbit 2.

This being Nolan, everything’s still wrapped in secrecy, although the shoot has travelled the globe and as with his Batman film it has used a mix of 35mm and IMAX film photography. It’s based on a script by Jonathan Nolan, which Chris then rewrote. All that’s known is that it’s about a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

The film’s due out November 7th, 2014 and stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Bill Irwin, Casey Affleck, Mackenzie Foy and John Lithgow.

Dallas Buyer’s Club UK Trailer – Matthew McConaughey finds himself fighting back against AIDS

Over the last couple of weekend Dallas Buyer’s Club has been doing pretty well in very limited released in the US. However it doesn’t arrive in the UK until next February, so it’s only now that a British trailer for the movie has been released, which you can watch above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the incredible true story of Texan rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof and his battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986. Starring Matthew McConaughey (Mud, Killer Joe, Magic Mike), Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club) and Jennifer Garner (Juno).’

The film will be released in the UK on February 7th 2014, and is out now in select US cinemas. [Read more…]

New The Wolf of Wall Street Trailer – Martin Scorsese takes Leo DiCaprio into a mad world of money

Movies about people in the financial world don’t usually sound that much fun, and to be honest on paper that’s true of The Wolf Of Wall Street, but as this trailer shows, it could be incredibly entertaining in its insanity.

The based-on-a-true-story movie is about Jordan Belfort’s meteoric rise, where he made making millions selling phony stocks before he was arrested and sentenced to 22 months in prison for securities fraud. Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Kyle Chandler, Jean Dujardin, Margot Robbie, Jon Bernthal, Rob Reiner, and Jon Favreau also star.

Martin Scorsese directs from a screenplay by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter. Although it wasn’t certain whether the film would be ready for a prime Oscar-bait release at the end of the year, it now appears it will indeed by going for an awards push. [Read more…]

Matthew McConaughey Gets A New Poster & Clips From Dallas Buyer’s Club

There’s already Oscar buzz surrounding Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyer’s Club, and not just because of his dramatic weight loss to play AIDS patient Ron Woodroof. Now a new poster for the movie has been released, along with a couple of new clips, including one that focuses on Jared Leto’s gay, cross-dressing character.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Matthew McConaughey stars in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB as real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. These were the early days of the AIDS epidemic, and the U.S. was divided over how to combat the virus. Ron, now shunned and ostracized by many of his old friends, and bereft of government-approved effective medicines, decided to take matters in his own hands, tracking down alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Bypassing the establishment, the entrepreneurial Woodroof joined forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts – who he once would have shunned – and established a hugely successful “buyers’ club.” Their shared struggle for dignity and acceptance is a uniquely American story of the transformative power of resilience.’

The film opens in select US theatres on Friday, November 1st, with a February UK release planned.
