Going In Style (Blu-ray Review) – Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman & Alan Arkin are going bank robbing

August 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, Matt Dillon, Christopher Lloyd
Director: Zach Braff
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 14th 2017 (UK)

As a feature film director, Scrubs star Zach Braff has previously helmed the quirky indie comedies Garden State and Wish I Were Here. He’s gone far more mainstream with Going In Style, a movie that could have perhaps benefitted from a quirkier spirit.

The movie is a remake of a 1979 film that starred George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg, who have here been replaced by Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin. The three men are lifelong friends whose old age is being put in jeopardy by shady corporate goings-on that are set to rob them of their pensions. [Read more…]

Going In Style Trailer – Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman & Alan Arkin go old man bank robbing

December 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bank robbing isn’t normally a good idea at the best of times, but when you’re all pensioners it’s probably best something to avoid altogether. However, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin obviously feel differently in the new movie, Going In Style.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winners Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”), Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules,” “Hannah and Her Sisters”) and Alan Arkin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) team up as lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Al, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty, in director Zach Braff’s comedy “Going in Style.”

‘Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.

‘The film also stars two-time Oscar nominee Ann-Margret (“Tommy,” “Carnal Knowledge”) as Annie, a grocery cashier who’s been checking Al out in more ways than one. Joey King (“Wish I Was Here”) stars as Joe’s whip-smart granddaughter, Brooklyn; with Oscar nominee Matt Dillon (“Crash”) as FBI Agent Hamer; and Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future” trilogy) as the guys’ lodge buddy, Milton. John Ortiz (“Silver Linings Playbook”) also stars as Jesus, a man of unspecified credentials who agrees to show the guys the ropes, and Peter Serafinowicz (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) as Joe’s former son-in- law, Murphy, whose pot clinic connections may finally prove useful.

‘Zach Braff (“Garden State”) directs from a screenplay by Theodore Melfi (“St. Vincent”).’

The film will be in cinemas next April. [Read more…]

‘In the moments right before her death, the QUEEN curses KAULDER with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today KAULDER is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. Stonehearst Asylum (Blu-ray Review)

June 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jim Sturgess, Kate Beckinsale, Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley, David Thewlis
Director: Brad Anderson
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 22nd 2015 (UK)

There’s certainly a great cast of British and Irish actors brought together for Stonehearst Asylum – virtually everyone in it you’ll recognise from something – so it’s a bit of a shame that they’ve gathered in service of a movie isn’t bad, but which never really takes off.

It’s 1899 and Young doctor Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess) arrives at the remote and isolated Stonehearst Asylum, a place where Europe’s finest families hide their relative who have issues that they feel mean they aren’t suitable for polite society. Newgate wishes to study the methods of the head of the institution, Silas Lamb (Ben Kingsley), who is apparently trying to create a utopian mental health facility, where instead of the harsh, tortuous methods of the past, the patients are treated with dignity and as much normality as possible. Director: Christopher Nolan
Running Time: 169 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 30th 2015 (UK)

The world is on the brink of disaster as extreme climate change has left much of the planet a dust bowl, with civilisation pretty much collapsed and many convinced that humanity only has a short time left to live. A wormhole has been discovered near Saturn, which leads to another galaxy where there may be habitable worlds. Kingsman: The Secret Service (Cinema Review)

January 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Taron Egerton
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Running Time: 124 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 29th 2015

The idea of updating James Bond and making him a younger character has been done before – witness the Alex Cross films and even Jason Bourne. Matthew Vaughan’s attempt, with a script by Jane Goldman, could have worked in theory, but it doesn’t, because of disastrous shifts in tone, and dreadfully cynical product placements. Director Vaughan seems to have become so carried away with his Kick-Ass franchise that he has transposed the idea to Britain, but used pretty much the same formula. The result leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth, which is a shame, because there are a few strengths on display here. [Read more…]

Fresh Interstellar Trailer – Best look yet at Matthew McConaughey in Christopher Nolan’s latest

October 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

interstellar-poster2-slideWith each new piece of marketing for Interstellar the scale of the movie seems to get bigger and bigger, which perhaps isn’t that surprising considering it’s from Christopher Nolan and has been described by Matthew McConaughey as one of the biggest movie he or anyone else has ever worked on.

Now a great new trailer has arrived, which gives us our best look yet at the movie, which does seem to be pretty cool.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘With our time on Earth coming to an end, a team of explorers undertakes the most important mission in human history: traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars.’

McConaughey stars alongside Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway and Michael Caine. It’s in UK cinemas on November 7th. [Read more…]

Kingsman: The Secret Service Trailer – Plus a poster for Matthew Vaughn’s Colin Firth spy adventure

May 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matthew Vaughn left X-Men behind partly so he could finally make his long-gestating adaptation of The Secret Service, based on Mark Millar’s comic The Secret Service.

Now it has a new name – Kingsman: The Secret Service – suggesting they’re already viewing it as a potential franchise, along with a poster, pics and the first trailer.

It’s essentially a particularly posh James Bond (in the form of Colin Firth) teaming up with someone much younger (newcomer Taron Egerton) and on a very different part of the social ladder, to take on an evil threat. And they’ve invited the likes of Michael Caine and Samuel L. Jackson along for the ride.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (“Kick-Ass,” “X-Men: First Class”), “Kingsman: The Secret Service” tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.’

The film’s due out this autumn.
