Fantastic Four (Cinema Review)

August 6, 2015 By Mike Martin Leave a Comment

Starring: Miles Teller, Toby Kebbell, Jamie Bell, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan
Director: Josh Trank
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: August 6th 2015

When even a film’s own cast start mumbling about how they haven’t seen it, that it’s probably a bit rubbish, and that it’s not a critics’ film, you know you’re in trouble. Sure enough, this latest version of a story which had a perfectly decent outing all of 10 years ago turns out to be a dud. It’s the usual reasons to blame too – a dog of a script, wooden half-hearted acting and a boring story about saving the world. To be fair, the special effects are actually pretty good, and some minor characters put in a shift, but in the preview screening people started walking out after 10 minutes.

Do we really have to go through the whole set-up of how they become the Four? Apparently we do, so we get a full hour of Teller’s Reed Richards inventing a teleportal machine which sends sand, chimps and then humans to an undiscovered planet that turns out to have an inexhaustible supply of power. He teams up with Johnny Storm (Jordan, ok), Sue Storm (Mara, half-asleep), Victor von Doom (Kebbell, chewing scenery) and his old pal Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell, adequate) to complete the work, but an accident sees Doom stranded on the planet alone while the other four return to Earth with strange powers. Fantastic Four Extended Preview – The superhero quartet are back and revamped

August 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fantastic-four-final-poster-slideThere have been rumours of trouble surrounding the production of the reboot of Fantastic Four, which has led some to write it off already. However reports from a couple of preview screenings have been pretty good, and it may end up surprising even the studio (which seems uncertain about the film).

Now we get our best taste yet with a four-minute extended preview of the movie, which you can take a look at below. It actually looks pretty good – more serious than the last take on the Marvel characters, but still with a sense of fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.’

The film is in UK cinemas August 6th. [Read more…]

Creed Trailer – The Rocky Saga gets a new chapter

July 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

creed-slideThe Rocky films are going in a new direction that could potentially spin-off into a franchise of its own with Creed, which follow he son of the famed Apollo Creed, who ends being coached by Rocky Balboa himself.

To give us a taste, the trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

‘Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

‘With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title… but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?’

The movie will be out at the end of the year. [Read more…]

New Fantastic Four Trailer – A far better look at the superhero reboot

April 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fantastic-four-trailer20th Century Fox had a fairly late start marketing their reboot of Fantastic Four and when the first trailer arrived, it didn’t show us much. However now a new one has arrived and it gives us a much better look at the movie, including a proper look at The Thing, Doctor Doom and the heroes various powers.

It suggests a far less jokey take than the movies from a few years ago, but one that’s still fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Sylvester Stallone Is Back As Rocky In The First Pic From Creed

April 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

creed-pic1-slideFor the past few years Sylvester Stallone has shown he’s certainly not afraid to revisit past success, and for the most part it’s worked, with decent box office for the likes of Rocky Balboa and Rambo. Now he’s bringing his famed boxing creation back once more for a movie that has the potential to become a franchise in its own right, but carrying on without him.

Now Stallone has shared the first picture from Creed, with features the actor in the ring alongside Michael B. Jordan as Adonis, the son of Rocky’s former opponent Apollo Creed.

Liam Hemsworth Wanted For Independence Day Sequel

January 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

liam-hemsworthAfter a very, very long time in development, the planned sequel to Independence Day is creeping towards production, and as proof they really intend to go ahead this time, The Wrap reports that Liam Hemsworth has been offered a major role in the movie.

The previously rumoured Michael B. Jordan is also still in the mix (while there’s been no confirmation, the speculation is that he’ll play the son of Will Smith’s character from the first film). Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are due to return for the film, which will shoot this year for release June 24, 2016.

There are no details on the plot, but it’s safe to say mankind will once more be threatened by aliens intent on humanity’s destruction. Emmerich has previously said, “The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years….It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.”

Fantastic Four Trailer – First look Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell in the superhero reboot

January 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fantastic-four-teaser-posterThe lack of a trailer or other marketing for Fox’s reboot of Fantastic Four has resulted in a lot of rumours, from reports that the movie is a disaster that needs massive reshoots to issues with the special effects meaning there was no footage to show.

However now the first trailer is here, and it seems very keen to show that this film will have a very different feel to the ones starring Jessica Alba and Chris Evans. It’s certainly darker and bigger in scale, even if the promo is still keen to keep a bit of mystery around exactly what the characters will look like in their hero guise.
