Ghost In The Shell (DVD/VoD Review) – Scarlett Johannson is just a robot with a human brain

July 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt
Director: Rupert Sanders
Running Time: 107 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 31st 2017 (DVD), July 24th 2017 (VoD)

Despite being in development for years, the live-action Hollywood movie version of Ghost In The Shell seemed to have the cards stacked against it. Some questioned whether Snow White & The Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders was the right director for the job, and many more felt that casting a white actress in a traditionally Japanese role smacked of whitewashing. Sadly, when the movie arrived, it didn’t get the sort of critical and commercial reaction that might have been able to overturn the issues surrounding it.

The movie opens in the near future with the brain of a young woman being transferred into a robot body (Johannsson) – the first of her kind. The android is named Major, and with memories of being nearly drowned by terrorists, she becomes part of a special team tasked with particularly difficult, often technological crimes. [Read more…]

Michael Pitt Will Get Villainous Opposite Scarlett Johansson In Ghost in the Shell

February 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A while ago it seemed that the live-action Hollywood version of Ghost In The Shell was moving full steam ahead and was poised to start shooting. However they them applied the breaks slightly, but it’s still on its way, and it’s just gotten a bump with the news, via THR, that Michael Pitt will play the villain.

It appears he’s replacing Sam Riley, who was previously attached to play the role. It’s not clear whether that means Riley is out of the film completely, or whether earlier reports about the role he was up for were incorrect. The film will follow a female special ops cyborg (Scarlett Johansson) who leads a fictional counter-cyberterrorist organization called Public Security Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. The unit is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man (Pitt), who will stop at nothing to destroy Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology.

Rupert Sanders (Snow While And The Huntsman) is set to direct, and hopes to start shooting in New Zealand at the end of the month. A March 2017 release is currently set.

Julia Stiles Joins Michael Pitt & Lily Rabe In Mary Pickford Biopic The First

February 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

julia-stilesHollywood loves to delve back into its past for a bit of a biopic, but it doesn’t often go back as far as the silent era. However Mary Pickford is definitely worth making a movie about, as she’s often regarded as the first true movie superstar.

Ryan Simpkins has already been cast to play a young Pickford, with American Horror Story’s Lily Rabe playing the more grown up version. Michael Pitt meanwhile is Owen Moore, Pickford’s first husband, before they divorced and she married the much more famous Douglas Fairbanks.

Now Variety reports that Julia Stiles has joined the cast, playing Frances Marion who was one of the top screenwriters of the early 20th Century. She won Oscars for The Big House and The Champ, and collaborated with Pickford on numerous projects.

Jennifer DeLia is set to direct. The movie is currently looking for distributors at the Berlin Film Festival. The hope is to shoot later this year, by which time the roles of Douglas Fairbanks, D.W. Griffith, Jack Pickford (Mary’s brother), Charlotte Hennessy (Mary’s mother) and Lillian Gish will also have been cast.

Michael Pitt Is Going To Rob The Mob

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now that Michael Pitt has left Boardwalk Empire behind, he has more time for the type of indie projects he’s always loved. With the American Film Market coming up, it’s been announced he’s attached to a movie called Rob The Mob, which will be looking for buyers at the event.

The film will see Pitt and Nina Arianda as a kind of modern-day Bonnie and Clyde who decide to lighten the pockets of some of New York City’s most notorious mobsters. While their plan is to knock over some criminal-run underground clubs, their heists lead them to something much bigger than they anticipated, inciting not just the mob but also the FBI and their own families to join the hunt to track them down.

Raymond De Felitta, who has directed movie like City Island and Café Society, will helm Rob The Mob, which has been written by Jonathan Fernandez. It isn’t clear when the movie might shoot. (Source: Deadline)

Crush Of The Day: Michael Pitt

August 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Boardwalk Empire – Season 2 hits DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on Monday, which seems to me more than enough of an excuse to revel in the hottness that on the series’ stars, Michael Pitt. The 31-year-old actor is the sort of person who might have been able to make it big in the movies, but instead he largely charted his own indie course before signing up for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

He first came to prominence playing Henry, the younger boyfriend of Jen (Michelle Williams), in Dawson’s Creek. However he apparently hated the experience and so spent the next few years flitting between indie movies and the edge of the mainstream in movies like Bully, Finding Forrester, Murder By Numbers, The Village, Last Days and Funny Games. He caught the eye of many a gay viewer as Tommy Gnosis, the rock star lover of transsexual Hedwig, in Hedwig And The Angry Inch, as well as with his sexy and often disrobed performance in Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers. He’s now left Boardwalk Empire behind, and as we reported this morning, will be heading back to film with The First, about Mary Pickford.

While Pitt often exudes an aura of being all about the art, he has done some modelling for Prada, which resulted in some of the great shots below. Click on the pics for larger versions. [Read more…]

Michael Pitt Up For Mary Pickford Biopic The First

August 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Pitt has left Boardwalk Empire behind and it seems he’s going back to the mix of indie, arthouse and edge of the mainstream movies he used to make before his sejourn to HBO. Now Deadline reports he’s signed up to appear in The First, about Hollywood legend Mary Pickford.

Pitt will play Owen Moore, Pickford’s first husband, before they divorced and she married the much more famous Douglas Fairbanks. Ryan Simpkins has been cast to play a young Pickford, with Lily Rabe up to play her as an adult. The film covers Pickford’s life from a woman’s point of view as she rose to powerhouse status in a male-dominated fledgling business.

She became one of the first true movie stars and along with Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffith, created United Artists to be their own stomping grounds where they could be bosses instead of employees. It’s also true that along with Fairbanks, she helped create the idea of stars living lives of excess slightly apart from normal people.

The plan is to start filming early next year.

Michael Pitt Decides That You Can’t Win

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Pitt could have charted a course into the mainstream, but he’s always flirted round the edge of that, only dipping into it when he gets a particularly interesting role such as his recent stint in Boardwalk Empire. Otherwise he’s stuck with more interesting projects.

Now he’s starting to put together his own movies and he’s planning to star in and produce You Can’t Win, based on Jack Black’s (no, not that one) 1928 semi-autobiographical book about his travels. Black spent time amongst the hobos, infiltrating their secret world and hopping onto freight trains to travel the US.

Robinson Devor (Zoo) will direct, with him and Pitt working on the script alongside Barry Gifford and Charles Mudede.

Pitt has always seemed like he could be a big star, but has chosen not to go down that route, and while You Can’t Win is unlikely to put him into the a-list, it could well be another interesting film from the actor.

Boardwalk Empire – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

January 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Michael Shannon, Kelly MacDonald
Director: Various
Running Time: 700 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: January 9th, 2012

Mixing fact and fiction, the past with present sensibilities and a great cast, Boardwalk Empire hit TV with a bang. Much of the initial interest came from the fact Martin Scorsese directed the first episode, and his influence is felt throughout the 12 episodes of Season 1. With the little expense spared in the creation of 1920s Atlantic City, it’s an incredibly rich world full of well-written characters, plenty of intrigue, decadence and moments of shocking violence.

The series centres around Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a fictionalised version of a real-life New Jersey prohibition figure, who’s the treasurer of Atlantic City and one of its most esteemed businessmen – largely because he’s got the entire city in his pocket and his criminal network is pretty much untouchable [Read more…]
