Ghost In The Shell (DVD/VoD Review) – Scarlett Johannson is just a robot with a human brain

July 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt
Director: Rupert Sanders
Running Time: 107 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 31st 2017 (DVD), July 24th 2017 (VoD)

Despite being in development for years, the live-action Hollywood movie version of Ghost In The Shell seemed to have the cards stacked against it. Some questioned whether Snow White & The Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders was the right director for the job, and many more felt that casting a white actress in a traditionally Japanese role smacked of whitewashing. Sadly, when the movie arrived, it didn’t get the sort of critical and commercial reaction that might have been able to overturn the issues surrounding it.

The movie opens in the near future with the brain of a young woman being transferred into a robot body (Johannsson) – the first of her kind. The android is named Major, and with memories of being nearly drowned by terrorists, she becomes part of a special team tasked with particularly difficult, often technological crimes. [Read more…]

New Godzilla Trailer – The massive lizard is back and causing havoc for Aaron Johnson

February 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Right from the beginning of this trailer it’s clear that one thing no city (or insurance company) wants is a Godzilla, as they are not conducive to peaceful living and not having enormous holes smacked through buildings. It may be 60 years since Godzilla first started causing havoc, but in this new big budget Hollywood flick he’s certainly not lost his destructive powers (and Aaron Johnson has lost his hotness either).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Gareth Edwards directs “Godzilla,” which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass”), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient,” “Cosmopolis”), and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck.,” “The Bourne Legacy”) and Bryan Cranston (“Argo,” TV’s “Breaking Bad”).’

The film, which is looking pretty cool, is due out in May. [Read more…]

Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche & Tim Roth Up For Brady Corbet’s Childhood of a Leader

December 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-pattinson-diorBrady Corbet is best known for appearing in the likes of Mysterious Skin, Melancholia, Funny Games and Martha Marcy May Marlene. For a 25-year-old he’s had a lot of indie movie experience and he’s going to be putting that into practice as he’s now turning feature director with The Childhood of a Leader.

He’s lined up a great cast for the movie, as Variety reports that Juliette Binoche and Tim Roth will topline the film, with Robert Pattinson also set to star.

Corbet also co-wrote the script with Mona Fastvold. Unfortunately though there’s not much info on the plot, other than that it ‘focuses on the childhood of a post-World War I leader’. The movie is tentatively set to shoot next May in Europe.

Godzilla Vs. Ken Watanabe – The Actor Joins As Shooting Commences

March 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ken-watanabeGodzilla may have originally been Japanese, but up until now the cast circling the upcoming big budget reboot of the franchise has been resolutely Western. Now they’ve decided to remedy that, with Warner Bros issuing a press release confirming Ken Watanabe for the movie.

They’ve also announced the start of principal photography in Vancouver, Canada, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson,  Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston starring.

There’s still no word on the plot for  Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont and Dave Callaham script, although it will inevitably revolve around a giant lizard that comes out of the ocean and starts attacking cities. Director Gareth Edwards has promised a more grounded film that Roland Emmerich’s 1998 take on Godzilla, which sticks closer to its Japanese roots.

It’ll hit cinemas May 16th, 2014.

Gareth Edwards is directing from a screenplay that is currently being rewritten by The Walking Dead creator Frank Darabont. David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Rises) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) wrote previous drafts of the script. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, and Mary Parent are producing for Legendary.
