Paddington 2 (Blu-ray Review) – Ben Whishaw’s bear is back and he’s heading to prison!

March 11, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Whishaw, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson
Director: Paul King
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 12th 2018 (UK)

Before the first Paddington movie, a lot of people were convinced Michael Bond’s classic character couldn’t work as a live-action film. Not only was it a major success, but the sequel was even better received, with Paddington 2 becoming the first film ever to get more than 190 ‘Fresh’ reviews on RottenTomatoes, without a single negative notice. That doesn’t mean it’s the best film ever made, but it does mean it’s one that’s very difficult not to be charmed by.

Paddington (Ben Whishaw) is happily living in London with the Brown family. He wants to get his beloved Aunt Lucy a special 90th Birthday present, and sets his sights on a unique pop-up book. Just when he’s nearly got enough cash, the book is stolen and the police think the small bear is the one who took it. As a result, Paddington ends up in prison, at the mercy of a scary brute known as Knuckles (Brendan Gleeson). [Read more…]

The Shape Of Water Red Band Trailer – Guillermo del Toro has a brand new fantasy

November 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If Guillermo Del Toro directs something, you know it’s going to be unique. Although with The Shape Of Water he seems to have been taking in a few inspirations, from the likes of ET and Amelie to the character of Abe Spien in Hellboy. It certainly looks like it could be something special, and early feviews from film festivals suggest the Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim director hasn’t lost his touch..

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.’

The movie is out in the US at the end of the year, with a February UK date set. Take a look at the new Red Band trailer below. [Read more…]

Michael Shannon Up For Guillermo del Toro’s Supernatural Cold War Romance

May 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-shannonA few weeks ago it was revealed that Guillermo Del Toro was working on a supernatural romance set during the Cold War, with Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer and Michael Stuhlbarg set to star. Now another actor is joining the throng, with Variety reporting the Michael Shannon is in talks for the film.

There aren’t many story details, but it’s reported that it’s set in 1963 and is about, ‘A mute laboratory worker, to be played by Sally Hawkins, falls in love with an amphibious man who’s being held captive’. Shannon will be the villain of the story.

The movie is set to shoot later this year for a 2017 release. No official title has been revealed, but it may end up being called The Shape of Water.

Guillermo Del Toro Directing A Cold War Romance With Sally Hawkins & Octavia Spencer

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Guillermo-del-ToroNot much is known about Guillermo Del Toro’s next movie, but we do now know that it’s a Cold War romance, which has Sally Hawkins attached to star, with Octavia Spencer in talks to join her, according to Variety and THR. Shooting will start this summer.

Del Toro had been weighing up several options for his next film, but apparently this one was always top of the list. Story details are been kept secret, but it’s believed that it’s ‘a mysterious and magical journey set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963 with an otherworldly love story at the center of it.’

Del Toro also wrote the script for the movie, so it’s little surprise it will mix the real with the fantastical. He’s also still working on a Pacific Rim sequel, but that’s taking longer to put together than originally planned.

Paddington (Blu-ray Review)

March 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Bonneville, Ben Whishaw, Sally Hawkins, Nicole Kidman
Director: Paul King
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 23rd 2015

Paddington is proof, if it were needed, that in a world where filmmakers constantly seem to think they need to make their family films cool and hip, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel if you’re going to do it right.

I have to admit I was dubious about this take on Michael Bond’s classic children’s character, as after seeing the first image of the bear’s new live-action/CGI incarnation, he just didn’t look quite right to me. However after only a couple of minutes of the movie starting, I have to admit I was rather enchanted. [Read more…]

New Paddington Trailer – Now with Ben Whishaw voicing the Peruvian bear

October 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

paddington-preview-pic2Last summer there was surprise when after Colin Firth had been due to voice Paddington in the live-action/CGI movie about famous bear, he stepped out and Ben Whishaw came in. It means that while we’ve had trailer and teasers, were haven’t heard from Paddington himself – until now, that is.

You can take a look at the new trailer below, complete with added Whishaw, alongside Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Peter Capaldi, Jim Broadbent and Nicole Kidman.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the producer of Harry Potter and Gravity, Paddington comes to the big screen for the first time in an epic new adventure. Featuring an all-star cast and effects courtesy of award-winning VFX company Framestore, PADDINGTON is THE big family film of Christmas.

‘Voted Best Animated Character at the 2012 British Animation Awards, and adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved books, Paddington follows the comic misadventures of a polite young bear with an endearing talent for comic chaos.

‘Paddington has grown up deep in the Peruvian jungle with his Aunt Lucy who, inspired by a chance encounter with an English explorer, has raised her nephew to dream of an exciting life in London. When an earthquake destroys their home, Aunt Lucy decides to smuggle her young nephew on board a boat bound for England, in search of a better life. Arriving alone at Paddington Station, Paddington soon finds that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family, who find him with a label tied around his neck which reads ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ They offer him a temporary home whilst he searches for the explorer who impressed Aunt Lucy all those years before.

‘But when Paddington catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat …’

The film is due out in the UK November 28th, 2014, with a mid-January US release planned. [Read more…]
