September 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you put Kate Winslet and Jim Broadbent in a movie, you’re probably on to a good thing. The two British acting luminaries are ser to be part of the English voice cast for Mary And The Witch’s Flower, alongside Ewen Bremner, Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Lynda Baron, Rasmus Hardiker, Teresa Gallagher and Morwenna Banks. Ruby Barnhill (The BFG) will be titular Mary, according to Deadline.

The film is the first movie from Japanese animation house Studio Ponoc, formed by former Studio Ghibli producer Yoshiaki Nishimura, alongside director Hiromasa ‘Maro’ Yonebayashi (Arrietty). The film iself is about ‘the surprising adventures of Mary in a school of magic that is not quite what it seems’.

The film follows the Ghibli approach of taking inspiration from European stories, as the movie is based on the 1971 novel by Mary Stewart, The Little Broomstick.

New Paddington Trailer – Now with Ben Whishaw voicing the Peruvian bear

October 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

paddington-preview-pic2Last summer there was surprise when after Colin Firth had been due to voice Paddington in the live-action/CGI movie about famous bear, he stepped out and Ben Whishaw came in. It means that while we’ve had trailer and teasers, were haven’t heard from Paddington himself – until now, that is.

You can take a look at the new trailer below, complete with added Whishaw, alongside Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Peter Capaldi, Jim Broadbent and Nicole Kidman.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the producer of Harry Potter and Gravity, Paddington comes to the big screen for the first time in an epic new adventure. Featuring an all-star cast and effects courtesy of award-winning VFX company Framestore, PADDINGTON is THE big family film of Christmas.

‘Voted Best Animated Character at the 2012 British Animation Awards, and adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved books, Paddington follows the comic misadventures of a polite young bear with an endearing talent for comic chaos.

‘Paddington has grown up deep in the Peruvian jungle with his Aunt Lucy who, inspired by a chance encounter with an English explorer, has raised her nephew to dream of an exciting life in London. When an earthquake destroys their home, Aunt Lucy decides to smuggle her young nephew on board a boat bound for England, in search of a better life. Arriving alone at Paddington Station, Paddington soon finds that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family, who find him with a label tied around his neck which reads ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ They offer him a temporary home whilst he searches for the explorer who impressed Aunt Lucy all those years before.

‘But when Paddington catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat …’

The film is due out in the UK November 28th, 2014, with a mid-January US release planned. [Read more…]

Postman Pat: The Movie (DVD Review)

September 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Steven Mangan, Ronan Keating, David Tennant, Rupert Grint, Jim Broadbent
Director: Mike Disa
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: September 29th 2014 (UK)

It’s surprising how many films get made where the moral of the movie is completely contradicted by the film itself, but nobody involved in making it seems to have realised that. And that’s the problem with Postman Pat: The Movie, a film where the central character has to remember to appreciate the small things in life that the original 80s TV show handled so well – where the most pressing issue was a lost sheep – but then sets it within a movie that’s noisy and bombastic, and has little to do with the gentleness of the series it’s based on. Colin Firth & Nicole Kidman Lead Live-Action Paddington Bear Cast

September 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firth-2It’s been announced that principal photography has begun for family adventure Paddington, based on the beloved fictional character bear, created by Michael Bond in 1958.

It’s also the first info we’ve had about the cast, which it has to be said is perhaps surprisingly good for the CG-live action mix. Colin Firth gets the lead role as the voice of Paddington Bear, with Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) as Mr. Brown, who take in the bear from Deepest Darkest Peru when he arrives in London, and Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Rabbit Hole, Moulin Rouge) as an evil taxidermist determined to wreak her revenge. They are joined by Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Brown, Julie Walters as Mrs. Bird, the housekeeper, and Jim Broadbent as Mr. Gruber, the owner of the antiques shop.

The movie will follow the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’) and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist…

The film is produced by Harry Potter’s David Heyman, with Paul King (Come Fly with Me, The Mighty Boosh) directing. It’s due open in the UK November 28, 2014, with The Weinstein Company recently picking up the North American rights, with plans to release it there in the first quarter of 2015.

How does Santa deliver presents to all the children of the world in one night? It’s a conundrum we’ve all pondered and while spoilsport scientists have tried to say it’s impossible as he’d have to go faster than the speed of light, the fact is he can do because he’s magic. However he might also have a lot of technology on his side, which is what Arthur Christmas suggests. [Read more…]

Seven Great Cloud Atlas Character Banners Emerge

September 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cloud Atlas is certainly one of the most interesting movies coming in the next few months, and with good (if not ecstatic) buzz coming from festival screenings, it should be certainly worth a look. Now seven character banners have been released, which are certainly very eye-catching.

The movie, based on David Mitchell’s novel spans hundreds of years, showing how individual lives affect others in the past, present, and future through a series of stories. The actors, including Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent and Tom Hanks play different people in each story, jumping between different races and genders. It’s currently set for UK release of February 22nd, 2013.

New Cloud Atlas Trailer – Fresh look at the Wachowskis and Tom Twyker’s ambitious movie

September 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s still difficult to know if Cloud Atlas is going to fulfil its towering ambition, but the more we see the more of a must-see it’s becominh. A few weeks ago a six-minute trailer introduced us to the movie’s six interconnected stories, featuring the same actors playing different characters in various time periods. Now a new, more traditional trailer has shown up, which trades on the visuals and scope of the movie and makes it look pretty impressive.
