A Hologram for the King Trailer – Tom Hanks heads for Saudi Arabia in Tom Twyker’s movie

March 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hologram-for-the-king-slideHot on the heels of the first image from the movie comes the trailer for A Hologram for the King, the movie that reunites Tom Hanks with one of his Cloud Atlas directors, Tom Twyker, and sends him to the Middle East. A UK release date of May 20th has also just been announced.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks, A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING follows businessman Alan Clay (Hanks) on a journey halfway around the world, far from his American roots, to a rising Saudi Arabian city.

‘Based on the best-selling novel by Dave Eggers, Clay is dispatched to pitch a new IT contract to a wealthy King, a project that must be a success for him to stave off bankruptcy, pay his daughter’s college fees, and finally accomplish something big.

‘Tom Tykwer’s comedy-drama is a portrait of the transcendent power of love, recounting the journey of a man in a country that requires him to rise to completely unknown challenges – and that answers old questions in new and unexpected ways.

‘A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING reunites Hanks and Tykwer, who previously worked together on Cloud Atlas. The film also stars Sarita Choudhury (Homeland), Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen), Ben Whishaw (Spectre), Tracey Fairaway (Enough Said), David Menkin (Zero Dark Thirty) and Tom Skerritt (Ted, Top Gun).’ [Read more…]

Tom Hanks Reteaming With Tom Twyker For A Hologram For The King

June 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hanksHaving worked with Tom Twyker on Cloud Atlas, Tom Hanks is teaming up with the director for an adaptation of Dave Eggers’ novel, A Hologram For The King, according to Deadline.

The book is about a down-on-his-luck businessman who decides to leave America and try to find better fortune in Saudi Arabia, hoping to ‘stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter’s college tuition, and do something memorable.’

At the moment the project doesn’t have a studio or financing attached, but with Hanks attached, it should be able to drum up some interest. Hanks will next be seen in the Somalian pirate drama Captain Phillips, before playing Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks.

Seven Great Cloud Atlas Character Banners Emerge

September 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cloud Atlas is certainly one of the most interesting movies coming in the next few months, and with good (if not ecstatic) buzz coming from festival screenings, it should be certainly worth a look. Now seven character banners have been released, which are certainly very eye-catching.

The movie, based on David Mitchell’s novel spans hundreds of years, showing how individual lives affect others in the past, present, and future through a series of stories. The actors, including Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent and Tom Hanks play different people in each story, jumping between different races and genders. It’s currently set for UK release of February 22nd, 2013.

New Cloud Atlas Trailer – Fresh look at the Wachowskis and Tom Twyker’s ambitious movie

September 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s still difficult to know if Cloud Atlas is going to fulfil its towering ambition, but the more we see the more of a must-see it’s becominh. A few weeks ago a six-minute trailer introduced us to the movie’s six interconnected stories, featuring the same actors playing different characters in various time periods. Now a new, more traditional trailer has shown up, which trades on the visuals and scope of the movie and makes it look pretty impressive. Trans Matrix Director Lana Wachowski Makes A Rare Appearance In Cloud Atlas Video

July 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Before the release of 2008’s Speed Racer, it was revealed that Lana Wachowski, who had directed the likes of The Matrix movies as Larry, was in the process of transitioning from male to female.

Lana completed her transition at some point after the release of Speed Racer, and then set to work, still alongside Andy, on several ambitious projects. One of her planned films, described as a ‘gay Iraq war love story’, couldn’t find funding, but they’ve now shot Cloud Atlas, with Run Lola Run’s Tom Twyker joining them for the multi-story film, which stars the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw and Hugh Grant.

Now Lana has made her first official appearance since her transition (she and Andy never have made many public appearances, so it’s unsurprising it’s taken a while until we’ve seen her) in a video in which she, Andy and Tom joke around and explain the creative process that went into making Cloud Atlas. You can watch that video above, and we’ve also embedded the epic and fascinating trailer they’re talking about below.

Cloud Atlas Extended Trailer – Will the ambitious multi-story epic work?

July 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We just posted some of the first images from the Wachowskis’ and Tom Twyker’s ambitious Cloud Atlas, and now Den Of Geek has tipped us off to an extended trailer for the fascinating looking movie, which you can watch right here. The trailer suggests it could be very good, although it does depend on how the different stories are knitted together. Cloud Atlas should hit cinemas later this year.

Cloud Atlas Concept Art Introduces Us To Future Korea

December 28, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Although it’s the type of film that could be either masterpiece or disaster, Clud Atlas is definitely an intriguing proposition. Based on Davit Mitchell’s book, it has three directors, leading two separate shooting units, telling six stories, all featuring the same actors, but who’ll be playing different genders and races in different stories.

It’s an ambitious and unusual movie, which apparently only got financed because Asian investors were intrigued by its idea of a single soul travelling through all the tales. Now some new concept art and an image from the movie have appeared online. They illustrate ‘An Orison of Sonmi~451′, which was the fifth story in the book, and is set in a corporate run Korea in 2144. The photo shows Bae Doona as the title character from the tale, but perhaps the most interesting image is the one above.

It’s a rendering of futuristic Seoul, but with the 19th Century sailing ship from Cloud Atlas’ first story in the foreground. It gives a hint as to how to tales – which stretch across 300 years – will be visually joined together. The movie, directed by Tom Twyker and the Wachoski siblings, should be in cinemas at the end of 2012. (Images via HanCinema)

Behind-The-Scenes Shot From Cloud Atlas

December 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Cloud Atlas is certainly an unusual movie, with three directors helming two separate units, telling six tales using the same actors in each, although the stars could be playing different races and genders in each story. To celebrate production ending on the movie, Empire has debuted a behind-the-scenes photo from the shoot, which you can see above.

In the centre of the shot are directors Tom Twyker, Lana Wachowsi and Andy Wachowski, while David Mitchell, who wrote the book the film is based on, is sat towards the back. The other guys are Cloud Atlas’ producers. Interestingly, it’s believed this is the first official image released of Lana Wachowski since she started living full-time as a woman. Although a few other shots of the notoriously publicity shy Wachowskis have surfaced in the last couple of years, this is the first official one.

Here’s a synopsis of the complex but intriguing film: ‘A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan’s California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified “dinery server” on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilization — the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other’s echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.’

Cloud Atlas stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Bae Doona and should hit cinemas towards the end of 2012.
