Ferdinand (Blu-ray Review) – A little bit gay or just a load of old animated bull?

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Cannavale, Anthony Anderson, David Tennant
Director: Carlos Saldahna
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: April 16th 2018 (UK)

I sometimes think the people who panic about ‘the gay agenda’ really ought to pay more attention to kids’ movies. If you’re looking for queer narrative – which never say they’re queer – you don’t have to look much further. For a start, nearly every animated movie revolves around the theme of being true to yourself. You also have numerous movies about parents finding it difficult to accept difference in their child, that child being a misfit who’s not the same as others and is often bullied for it, and who will eventually win by accepting themselves and being proud of it.

All that could just be coincidence, but then there are things such as the fact that a lot of animated movies consciously deal with ideas about chosen families, something you normally only hear about in a queer context. It was this that got me considering the queer side of Ferdinand. Partway though the film, the titular character is insisting the dog he grew up with is his ‘brother’, while the dog says he can’t be the family of a bull because that’s not the way things work. Ultimately that becomes the main theme of the movie – a bull rejecting the toxic masculinity that the other bovines believe is their only choice, and learning that you can choose your own way and your own family, and it doesn’t matter if others think it’s ‘queer’. Postman Pat: The Movie (DVD Review)

September 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Steven Mangan, Ronan Keating, David Tennant, Rupert Grint, Jim Broadbent
Director: Mike Disa
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: September 29th 2014 (UK)

It’s surprising how many films get made where the moral of the movie is completely contradicted by the film itself, but nobody involved in making it seems to have realised that. And that’s the problem with Postman Pat: The Movie, a film where the central character has to remember to appreciate the small things in life that the original 80s TV show handled so well – where the most pressing issue was a lost sheep – but then sets it within a movie that’s noisy and bombastic, and has little to do with the gentleness of the series it’s based on. Postman Pat: The Movie Trailer – The classic kid’s character goes CG and cinematic

February 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There were actually relatively few episodes of the original 1981 stop-motion TV series Postman Pat made, but it became immensely popular with kids, which resulted in endless re-runs as well as new series in the 1990s and 2000s.

It’s stayed in the public consciousness that mow a CGI movie is coming, and now we can get our first taste with the trailer.

The film sees the Greendale postman (and his cat Jess, of course) getting involved in an X Factor type programme, while looking far more sparkly and CG than he used to. Postman Pat: The Movie is released in UK cinemas on May 23rd and is voiced by actors including Stephen Mangan, David Tennant and Rupert Grint. [Read more…]

The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists (Blu-ray)

September 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, Russell Tovey, David Tennant
Director: Peter Lord
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: September 10th 2012

Aardman Animation is one of the most reliable animation houses outside Emeryville (the headquarters of Pixar). From the early days of Morph through the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit onto films like Chicken Run and Flushed Away, you can always be fairly sure of fun when the company is involved. Unfortunately that hasn’t always translated into big box office, which resulted in their deal with Dreamworks Animation ending early. Luckily though Sony was looking for ways to expand their animation output and so they stepped up for The Pirates! (and last year’s Arthur Christmas).

Peter Lord co-founded Aardman with David Sproxton back in the 1970s, but this is the first film he’s directed since he co-helmed Chicken Run with Nick Park back in 2000. Thankfully he hasn’t lost his touch, as The Pirates! is great fun, full of Aardman’s trademark attention to detail and visual jokes, along with a playful sense of humour and a plot that never takes itself too seriously, but still manages to create memorable characters. Doctor Who Going Big Screen With David Yates Directing

November 15, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Ever since Christopher Ecclestone stepped into Doctor Who’s shoes a few years ago, there’s been talk of a big screen version of the classic sci-fi show, but plans don’t seem to have moved very far. Now though, Variety reports that none other than Harry Potter director David Yates is planning on making a Doctor Who movie!

The film is being produced by the BBC, who hope to turn this intergalactic alien Time Lord into a worldwide theatrical franchise – although presumably if they’re hoping for a top flight movie, they’ll be looking for a studio to partner with on the project and splash some cash of grade A special effects.

David Yates commented, “We’re looking at writers now. We’re going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena. The notion of the time-traveling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time.”

The original series aired from 1963 to 1989, and was then rebooted in 2005. It is one of the BBC’s most lucrative properties.

It’ll be interesting to discover whether there’s a masterplan involved here, as to how this will fit with Doctor Who on the small screen. Is the idea Matt Smith will be big screen Who? Will they find a way to go back to David Tennant? Will there be a new Doctor? Is the film’s timeline going to run completely separately from what we’ve seen on the small screen? We’ll have to wait and see.

David Tennant Playing Twins In Nativity 2

October 31, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

What’s better than one David Tennant? Well, if you’re a fan, two of him! Although 2009’s semi-improvised Nativity, starring Martin Freeman and Ashley Jensen, wasn’t the biggest hit ever, it did well enough to warrant a sequel, which recently started shooting.

Now Variety has revealed that this follow-up will see Tennant play twin primary school teachers at rival schools, each put together a Christmastime performance. One of the brothers leads a group of underachieving kids to put on a Nativity play in a national competition, while the other twin, whose always been a bit of a golden boy, is in charge of a posh school’s play.

Debbie Issitt will once more direct, with film taking place now in the Midlands and North Wales.
