New The Spy Who Dumped Me Trailer – Espionage comedy with Kate McKinnon & Mila Kunis

May 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis seem like they should make a great comedic pairing. We’ll get to see whether they are with The Spy Who Dumped Me, where the duo get in way over their heads for some buddy comedy action.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon), two thirty-year-old best friends in Los Angeles, are thrust unexpectedly into an international conspiracy when Audrey’s ex-boyfriend shows up at their apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail. Surprising even themselves, the duo jump into action, on the run throughout Europe from assassins and a suspicious-but-charming British agent, as they hatch a plan to save the world.’

Justin Theroux plays the ex, with Sam Heughan, Hasan Minhaj, and Gillian Anderson also starring. The film is due to hit cinemas in the summer. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Ferdinand (Blu-ray Review) – A little bit gay or just a load of old animated bull?

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Cannavale, Anthony Anderson, David Tennant
Director: Carlos Saldahna
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: April 16th 2018 (UK)

I sometimes think the people who panic about ‘the gay agenda’ really ought to pay more attention to kids’ movies. If you’re looking for queer narrative – which never say they’re queer – you don’t have to look much further. For a start, nearly every animated movie revolves around the theme of being true to yourself. You also have numerous movies about parents finding it difficult to accept difference in their child, that child being a misfit who’s not the same as others and is often bullied for it, and who will eventually win by accepting themselves and being proud of it.

All that could just be coincidence, but then there are things such as the fact that a lot of animated movies consciously deal with ideas about chosen families, something you normally only hear about in a queer context. It was this that got me considering the queer side of Ferdinand. Partway though the film, the titular character is insisting the dog he grew up with is his ‘brother’, while the dog says he can’t be the family of a bull because that’s not the way things work. Ultimately that becomes the main theme of the movie – a bull rejecting the toxic masculinity that the other bovines believe is their only choice, and learning that you can choose your own way and your own family, and it doesn’t matter if others think it’s ‘queer’. Kate McKinnon Gets Her First Lead Role In Amblin’s The Lunch Witch

December 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Out actress/comedienne Kate McKinnon has gained a lot of fans thanks to Saturday Night Live, and this year she got her biggest movie role yet in Ghostbusters. However, she’s never had a lead role in a film, until now.

Variety reports that Kate has signed up to play the central part in The Lunch Witch, Amblin’s planned movie based on the book by Deb Lucke. She will play, ‘Grunhilda, who has inherited generations worth of magical recipes. But when no one believes in magic anymore, she is forced to apply to be a school lunch lady, thanks to her knack for cooking up foul dishes. While she spends most of her time scaring the children at the school while serving them lunch, Grunhilda accidentally befriends a shy girl who needs help both at school and at home, given her timidness, something a witch like Grunhilda has a tough time following through on.’

Clay Kaytis is set to direct the movie, although it’s not clear when the movie might shoot.

New Office Christmas Party Trailer – Jennifer Aniston & Jason Bateman lead a star-studded festive film

December 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ghostbusters Director Paul Feig Suggests Studio Won’t Let Him Say One Of The Main Characters Is LGBT

July 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ghostbusters-kate-mckinnonA couple of people have noted that in the new take on Ghostbusters, there’s the possibility that Kate McKinnon’s character, Jillian, maybe be somewhere on the LGBT spectrum. However, as nearly always with big Hollywood movies, while there are suggestions, nothing’s actually said.

It appears there might be a reason for that to do with the studio, and that the filmmakers would have really liked to have been a little more open about. The Daily Beast asked director Paul Feig straight out whether Jillian is gay, to which he answered, “What do you think?”

When the intereviewer says that they think the answer is ‘yes’, Feig reportedly silently nodded and said, “I hate to be coy about it. But when you’re dealing with the studios and that kind of thing…

“You know, Kate is who she is and I love the relationship between Kate and Melissa’s characters,” he says. “I think it’s a very interesting, close relationship. If you know Kate at all she’s this kind of pansexual beast where it’s just like everybody who’s around her falls in love with her and she’s so loving to everybody she’s around. I wanted to let that come out in this character.”

That would suggest Jillian is supposed to be LGBT, but they’re not allowed to say it.

While Star Trek Beyond is making Sulu gay, generally Hollywood is still terribly afraid of having openly LGBT major characters in its big budget movies. The fear is that inclusion will affect the box office – or indeed get the movie banned – in countries where homosexuality is still frowned up or illegal, and may well deter anti-gay elements in the US. As hundreds of millions are being spent on these films, they simply won’t take the risk.
