Antonio Banderas To Play Gay Fashion Legend Gianni Versace In New Biopic

July 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Antonio-BanderasAntonio Banderas has long been an admirer of Gianni Versace, and now he’s set to play the fashion designer in a new biopic, according to WWD. Pelle the Conqueror and The House Of The Spirits’ Bille August is set to direct the movie, which will start shooting in December.

The movie will follow Versace’s story, who went from being a small town Italian boy who apprenticed in his mother’s sewing business to becoming one of the most renowned fashion designers in history and head of a clothing empire. He was also openly gay, and had been with his partner since 1982. Versace was tragically killed by Andrew Cunanan in 1997, who was on a killing spree having murdered three other people in the preceding weeks. It’s still now known if Versace was deliberately targeted, and if he was, why Cunanan would have done so (the murderer killed himself eight days after shooting Gianni, and so could not say why he’d done it).

Banderas has a great love for fashion, and has been studying fashion design at Central Saint Martins in London. He presented his first collection in collaboration with Scandinavian high-street label Selected in May.

However, the Versace film is completely unofficial, with the fashion group he founced saying, that ‘it has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming movie about Versace. The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.’

the-33-slideWhen a cave-in trapped a group of Chilean miner deep underground the story captivated the world, with millions waiting to hear what would happen to the men as rescuers laborious bug a new tunnel that would get them out.

It’s not surprising that Hollywood decided it would be a great tale to make a movie about, and now it’s on its way, with the first trailer having now arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In 2010, the eyes of the world turned to Chile, where 33 miners had been buried alive by the catastrophic explosion and collapse of a 100-year-old gold and copper mine. Over the next 69 days, an international team worked night and day in a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped men as their families and friends, as well as millions of people globally, waited and watched anxiously for any sign of hope. But 200 stories beneath the surface, in the suffocating heat and with tensions rising, provisions – and time – were quickly running out.

‘A story of resilience, personal transformation and triumph of the human spirit, the film takes us to the Earth’s darkest depths, revealing the psyches of the men trapped in the mine, and depicting the courage of both the miners and their families who refused to give up.

‘The international cast is led by Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”), James Brolin, and Lou Diamond Phillips, with Bob Gunton and Gabriel Byrne. Jennifer Lopez Up To Join Antonio Banderas In Chilean Miner Drama The 33

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jennifer-lopezWith the likes of American Idol and motherhood to deal with, Jennifer Lopez hasn’t been making that many movies recently (and some would say that’s a good thing. However she’s now signed on to star in the Chilean miner drama The 33, alongside Antonio Banderas, Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro, according to THR.

Last month it was revealed that Antonio Banderas will play the miner Mario Sepulveda, a.k.a. Super Mario, with Martin Sheen playing Mario’s father and Rodrigo Santoro playing another one of the 33 miners, who were trapped underground for 69 days in 2010. No details were given regarding Jennifer Lopez’s role, although we’re presuming she’ll play someone waiting for news on the surface (all those underground were men).

Patricia Riggen is directing from a screenplay by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera. Production is scheduled to begin this fall in Chile.

The miners spent 69 days trapped underground after a cave-in, while workers on the surface worked around-the-clock the rescue them. Antonio Banderas will be portraying Mario Sepulveda, the charismatic miner also known as Super Mario. Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro are also attached to star.

I’m So Excited (Cinema)

May 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, Guillermo Toledo
Director: Pedro Almodovar
Running Time: 90 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 3rd 2013

Just when Pedro Almodovar earned himself a new audience with the brilliantly bonkers Skin I Live In, he follows it up with a film that at best can be described Almodovar-lite. It’s charming enough and at times well-acted, but ultimately too paper-thin to be remembered along with his great works.

If he is the high priest of camp then it was only a matter of time before he made a film set on a plane, with three stewards as his main characters. And very funny they are, although their constant bitching and fussing about who is bisexual and who has slept with who gets tiresome over the 90 long minutes. Even their singing of the title song by the Pointer Sisters wears a bit thin after 30 seconds. [Read more…]

Camp New UK Trailer For Pedro Almodovar’s I’m So Excited Lands

March 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pedro Almodovar returns soon with I’m So Exited, which looks like it’s going to be his gayest and campest movie in a very long time. Now Total Film has debuted a new UK trailer for the movie, which shows us plenty of very gay aeroplane shenanigans, as well as Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas’ working on the ground for their cameo appearances.

The film is about the passengers and crew of a seemingly doomed passenger plane as panic overtakes the aircraft. The film features Javier Camara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Duenas, Raul Arevalo, Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, along with ‘special collaborations’ with Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega.

A UK release date of May 3rd is currently set, with the US getting it in June.

The Skin I Live In (2011)

May 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, Jan Cornet
Director: Pedro Almodovar
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 26th, 2011

Pedro Almodovar rarely makes a bad movie and The Skin I Live In is no exception. Antonio Banderas plays a doctor called Robert Legrand, who’s known for his advances in artificial skin and sex change operations. However he hides a secret, because locked away at home is a woman (Elena Anaya) he’s been doing surgical experiments on. She wants to get out, but Robert has a sophisticated security system and a dedicated mother (Marisa Parades) to keep her in. But is he keeping her in because what he’s been doing is illegal, or is there more going on?

The Skin I Live In is the sort of film where I don’t want to say too much about the plot or it’ll spoil the film’s slow reveal, but suffice to say things are not as they appears, and it all has to do with former tragedies in the doctor’s life and the destruction of his family. And it’s no coincidence the woman looks like Robert’s deceased wife. [Read more…]
