My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 Trailer – Nia Vardalos and John Corbett return for a new comedy adventure

November 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

My-Big-Fat-Greek-Wedding-2-slideIt’s been 13 years since My Big Fat Greek Wedding became a true sleeper hit sensation, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars and becoming the most successful independent movie ever made at the time. Writer/star Nia Vardalos never quite captured that magic again, and now she’s returning to her most popular character for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.

You can watch the first trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Gold Circle Entertainment and HBO present a Playtone production of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, the long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. Written by Academy Award® nominee Nia Vardalos, who stars alongside the entire returning cast of favorites, the film reveals a Portokalos family secret that will bring the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding.

‘Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee, Waking Ned Devine) directs the next chapter of the film that will be once again produced by Rita Wilson and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. Paul Brooks and Steve Shareshian return to executive produce alongside Vardalos and Scott Niemeyer. Universal Pictures will distribute the comedy in the United States and in select international territories.’

The film will be out in the UK next March.

Helicopter Mom (Iris Prize 2014 Review)

October 18, 2014 By Scott Elliott Leave a Comment

Starring: Nia Vardalos, Jason Dolley, Mark Boone Junior
Director: Salomé Breziner
Running Time: 83 mins
Release Date: October 10th 2014

Maggie, a single mother in the US, is terrified of losing her only son Lloyd when he graduates and moves away to college, and so does her best to control his life as much as possible before he goes. Lloyd, played to nonplussed and eventually exasperated perfection by Jason Dolley, pushes back as she hangs on tighter, and when she realises the only way her beloved son can afford to attend college is with a minority scholarship, she outs him as gay to the whole school in order to apply. The only problem being that Lloyd doesn’t really know whether he’s gay or not, and of course his mother won’t listen.

The term ‘Helicopter Mom’ comes from the behaviour of certain parents who are always hovering over their children, never letting them find their own way without being told what to do. Cue a dozen cringe moments along the lines of the hit American pie series, without the gross-out factor. (The closest this movie gets to gross-out are the overly-tight outfits and youthful hair on Nia Vardalos as she gives a delightfully manic performance as Maggie.) [Read more…]

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 Is Coming, With Nia Vardalos & John Corbett Returning

May 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

my-big-fat-greek-wedding-pic1My Big Fat Greek Wedding is still one of the most successful independent movies ever made, having grossed over $360 million back in 2002. However writer/star Nia Vardalos never really managed to capitalise on that film’s success.

It may be for that reason that a sequel is now in the works, according to THR.

Vardalos has written the script for the follow-up, which is about a new wedding that brings the family together again, along with the revelation of a family secret. She will also return to play Toula Portakalos, with John Corbett also coming back as her husband Ian.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding, will serve have the same job for the follow-up through their Playtone Pictures company, alongside Gary Goetzman.

Nia Vardalos commented, “Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

Joel Zwick directed the first film, but the sequel doesn’t have a director attached at this time.

Emily Watson, Nia Vardalos & Sandra Oh Going To 33 Liberty Lane

May 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A great female cast is coming together for the rom-com 33 Liberty Lane, with THR reporting that Emily Watson, Nia Vardalos, Sandra Oh and Melora Hardin have all signed up to star for director Peter Hewitt.

The actresses will play a group of four friends who set up a phone-sex business to help pay the bills. However while they know there’s a lot of money in the sex industry they don’t know much about how to get hold of it, so they turn to a local prostitute to lend some expertise.

Brit born Hewitt made his debut with Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and has also helmed The Borrowers, Thunderpants, Garfield and is currently shooting Home Alone 5 (yep, it really is being made), so this is something slightly different for him. 33 Liberty Lane will shoot this summer.
