Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Lesbian Gets Klown Screenwriters

May 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

sacha-baron-cohen-brunoFor a while now, Sacha Baron Cohen has been planning a film that’s currently titled The Lesbian. Now the film is moving forward with the news, via Variety, that Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam have been hired to write the script. Cohen decided on them after becoming a fan of their movie, Klown.

The movie will be loosely based on the true story of Hong Kong billionaire Cecil Chao, who offered a hefty $65 million reward to any man who marries his daughter, even though she’s a lesbian who lives in France with her wife (and has even has the relationship blessed by a French church).

One of the more interesting things about the tale is that Cecil Chao has never even married himself, so it’s not like he’s an avid believer in the institution, it appears he just doesn’t want his offspring to be gay. It’s also known that despite the massive dowry, his daughter remains on good terms with him.

Sacha Baron Cohen is looking to play the billionaire father, so it’s likely there’ll be some racial changes from real life to the movie. Christensen and Hvam will be working from a treatment by Cohen and Art Hines.

Tom Hooper May Take On Sacha Baron Cohen’s Freddie Mercury Biopic

March 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hooperSacha Baron Cohen may have only had a small role in Les Miserables, but director Tom Hooper must have liked working with him, as Deadline reports that they may reunite for a biopic of Freddie Mercury. Baron Cohen’s been attached to the movie for quite a long time, but the film has had a bit of revolving door of directors.

Hooper hasn’t officially signed on to direct yet, but he is apparently seriously considering it.

Peter Morgan’s script will deal with the star’s rise to fame, leading up to the classic performance at 1985’s Live Aid, and won’t cover his death from AIDS, which helped remove a lot of the stigma of the disease. It’s not known either how frank it will be about his sexuality (although you’d have to presume it won’t sweep it under the carpet) The surviving members of Queen are all involved in the movie, ensuring the use of the band’s classic songs.

Queen themselves are involved in the film having licensed their most famous tracks, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions, We Will Rock you and Another One Bites The Dust for the movie. We’ll have to see whether Hooper does end up making the film.

Sacha Baron Cohen Takes On The Lesbian

October 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A story has been doing the round recently about Hong Kong billionaire Cecil Chao, who’s offered a hefty $65 million reward to any man who marries his daughter, even though she’s a lesbian who lives in France with her wife (and has even has the relationship blessed by a French church).

Sacha Baron Cohen thinks this is prime material for a comedy, as Variety reports he’s teamed up with Paramount to produce and potentially star in a movie about it, currently called The Lesbian.

One of the more interesting things about the tale is that Cecil Chao has never even married himself, so it’s not like he’s an avid believer in the institution, it appears he just doesn’t want his offspring to be gay. It’s also known that despite the massive dowry, his daughter remains on good terms with him. It is believed that Sacha Baron Cohen is looking to play the billionaire father, so it’s likely there’ll be some racial changes from real life to the movie.

The film is in the very early stages at the moment, as no screenwriter has yet been attached. It is of course not Cohen’s first brush with gay-themed films, as he starred as the flamboyantly homosexual Bruno in the movie of the same name.

Sacha Baron Cohen May Try To Spoof Bond

August 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sacha Baron Cohen had a medium success with The Dictator this summer, and now he’s thinking about what he’ll do next, as Variety reports that he’s has sold an untitled spy comedy pitch to Paramount Pictures, which parodies the James Bond franchise.

Cohen will write the screenplay with Phil Johnston (Cedar Rapids, Wreck-It Ralph), based on their pitch to the studio. The story follows an 007-like spy, who is forced to go on the lam with his long-lost, idiotic brother.

Although it isn’t confirmed that Sacha Baron Cohen will star, it seems likely that he may play the brother, a moronic soccer hooligan. Sources indicate that the untitled pitch was acquired between the high six-figure to low seven-figure range. Hopefully it’ll be good, although spoofing Bond does seem a rather stale idea.

This is the first project to come out of the actor-writer’s first-look deal with Paramount Pictures from earlier this year, although it isn’t known when it might shoot.

Stephen Frears Frontrunner For Freddie Mercury Biopic

May 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For quite a long time now Sacha Baron Cohen has been attached to star in a biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. The project is moving forward, with Variety reporting that Stephen Frears is the frontrunner to direct the film. He would seem good choice, having proven himself with biopics with The Queen, as well as showing his love of music in the likes of High Fidelity.

No deal is set yet and several other filmmakers are being considered, but at the moment Frears appears to have the inside track. The film would reunite Frears with The Queen screenwriter Peter Morgan, who’s been working on the script, with Stephen J. Revele and Christopher Wilkinson rewriting his drafts.

It’s previously been suggested that the film will deal with the star’s rise to fame, leading up to the classic performance at 1985’s Live Aid, and won’t cover his death from AIDS, which helped remove a lot of the stigma of the disease. It isn’t known how the film will deal with the singer’s sexuality, although presumably it will feature in the movie. The surviving members of Queen are all involved in the movie, ensuring the use of the band’s classic songs.

The Dictator Red Band Trailer – Sacha Baron Cohen’s film gets a bit ruder

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sacha Baron Cohen returns to cinemas on May 16th with The Dictator, and now a new red band trailer has arrived, which shows us some of the film’s ruder moments. The film is ‘The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed’ and who ends up having to live the life on an ordinary American when he goes to New York to deliver a speech to the UN. Bizarrely, it’s partly based on a book by Saddam Hussein!

The Dictator – Opening Scene

April 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I have to admit I wasn’t a big fan of Borat or Bruno, but The Dictator looks like it could be a lot of silly fun, but with a bit of a serious point to it. Now the opening scene of the movie has popped up online, which gives you a hint about what the movie is all about. The Dictator, which bizarrely enough is partially based on a book by Saddam Hussein, sees Sacha Baron Cohen as General Aladeen of Wadiya, and tells ‘The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed’. It’s due out May 18th, 2012!

The Dictator: Admiral General Aladeen Comments On His Oscar Ban

February 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While it’s been difficult to separate the truth from the publicity stunt, in the last few days there’s been a bit of fuss over whether Sacha Baron Cohen was planning on attending the Oscars in character as Admiral General Aladeen from his upcoming movie The Dictator. Intial reports said the Academy had banned him, but they responded saying he wasn’t banned but that the stunt was unwelcome. Now Admiral General Aladeen himself has responded to the evil westerners trying to stop his going to the Oscars, so take a look. The Dictator is out May 18th.
