African Cats (Blu-ray)

August 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Samuel L. Jackson
Director: Alistair Fothergill, Keith Scholey
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: September 3rd, 2012

Once Upon A Time, Disney wasn’t just known for Mickey Mouse and animated movies, it also used to make nature films, bringing the wonders of wildlife to children. Over time, this beloved project of Walt himself rather got lost in the shuffle, but now it’s back with a new imprint called Disneynature, which produced this look at Lions and Cheetahs on the African savannah.

To help them, Disney went to some of the best in the nature filmmaking business, who inevitably worked for the BBC Natural History Unit, including Alistair Fothergill, the former head of the unit who was also the brains behind The Blue Planet and Planet Earth. He co-directed African Cats alongside Keith Scholey, who also got his training at the Beeb. [Read more…]

Samuel L Jackson & Angela Bassett Up For Black Nativity

July 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Samuel L. Jackson may be 63, but he sure ain’t slowing down and continues to be in pretty much every movie going. Now he’s got another one, as he’s signed on to star in Black Nativity, along with Angela Bassett. Jennifer Hudson is also likely to star, although she hasn’t signed a deal yet.

Kasi Lemmons is directing and adapting Langston Hughes’ 1961 gospel Broadway musical, which reframes the biblical story as the dreams of a black teenager. The film sees the troubled Baltimore teen being sent to stay with the grandparents he’s never met in Harlem. Through his grandfather’s Christmas Eve sermon and a stylised, dream-sequence retelling of the classic Nativity story, he learns about the importance of faith and family.

Jackson and Bassett are set to play the estranged grandparents, Rev. Clarence and Aretha Cobbs. Hudson will be the boy’s mother, who hasn’t spoken to her father since they had a falling out after she got pregnant. Jackson will likely play multiple characters during the Nativity sequence.

Sounds like it could be an interesting one. There’s no news on when it might shoot, although what’s the betting it will open at Christmas (probably in 2013)? (Source: Variety)

Samuel L. Jackson Joins RoboCop Remake

June 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Samuel L. Jackson continues his mission to try and be in every major franchise going, as the actor has boarded the remake of RoboCop, opposite Joel Kinnaman in the title role. Jackson will play a big shot TV mogul named Pat Novak, a powerful force in the world inhabited by RoboCop.

The original movie featured many interstitial commercials and television parodies edited throughout the opening scenes of Alex J. Murphy’s transformation into a cyborg officer on the Detroit Police Department. This casting news indicates that the reboot might involve similar scenes, or at least make a nod to this particular future’s hyper-evolution in small screen entertainment.

RoboCop begins shooting in Toronto later this summer with Jose Padilha directing. Gary Oldman also stars. (Source: THR)

The clips that have been released from Avengers Assemble have certainly helped to up the anticipation for the movie – not that it needs it, as tracking is already suggesting a $150 million plus US opening weekend! The latest clip sees Loki imprisoned and in a battle of words with Nick Fury. Clcik to take a look. The film hits UK cinemas on April 26th.

Captain America 2 Set For April 2014

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel’s interconnected universe of superheroes doesn’t end with The Avengers. In fact it’s only the beginning, as Iron Man 3 is already set for May 3rd, 2013, then on November 15th, 2013 it’s time for Thor 2. Now Marvel has announced that April 4th, 2014 is the day we’ll be getting Captain America 2.

Marvel/Disney issued a brief press release, saying, ‘The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger on April 4, 2014. The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.’

It would appear therefore that we can expect both Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson in the movie, and with the likes of Cobie Smulders (who plays S.H.I.E.L.D’s Maria Hill in Avengers Assembled) having signed lengthy contracts covering a lot of Marvel movies, we can probably expect more continuing characters too.

Incidentally there’s still a May 16th, 2014, release date held aside for another Marvel movie, although as yet it’s not been been announced what it will be.

Avengers Gets A New Name And A New Poster To Prove It

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel’s The Avengers is no more, in the UK at least, as with less than two months before its release, the movie has a new title. So what’s it going to be called? Well, distributor Disney has revealed it’ll be known as Marvel Avengers Assemble in Britain, and they’ve released the poster above to prove it.

An Avengers assemble trailer is promised tomorrow afternoon, which will hopefully be packed with cool footage. The new title seems to have been adopted because casual moviegoers were wondering if it was another remake of 1960s Avengers TV show.

Just one question though, why in the poster is Chris Evans about 25ft tall?

Here’s the amended official synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios presents “Marvel Avengers Assemble”—the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel Avengers Assemble” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel Avengers Assemble” hits UK cinemas on April 26, 2012.’

Paul Giamatti & Samuel L. Jackson Going Turbo

February 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Samuel L. Jackson and Paul Giamatti both have form on animated movies, Jackson on the likes of The Incredibles and Giamatti in Robots and The Ant Bully, and now they’re going CG again as THR reports they’ve joined the voice cast of Dreamworks Animation’s Turbo.

The animated film follows an ordinary garden snail with an impossible dream to become the fastest snail in the world. His obsession with speed and all things fast has made him an oddity and outsider in the slow and cautious snail community, and a constant embarrassment to his careful older brother. When he is one day imbued with the power of amazing speed, he embarks on a quest that will see him racing in the Indianapolis 500.

Also signing up are Michael Peña, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith and Snoop Dogg, who join the previously cast Ryan Reynolds, who’ll voice the main character. David Soren is directing and writing from his own original concept, with the movie due out July, 2013.

Five New Pics From The Avengers Released

January 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Five new images from the Avengers have surface via Marvel.com, which if nothing else shows that while the scarring on Nick Fury’s face has been rather underplayed when we’ve seen it before, but it appears it’s going to be much more prominent in The Avenger. Indeed, the spider-webbing scars in the pic above have already led some to wonder if they’re going to play a role in the movie somehow.

In case you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what The Avengers is about, here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow.

‘Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012.’ The team his the UK on April 27th.

Sacha Baron Cohen On For Django Unchained

November 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s starting to seem there’s not going to be anyone who isn’t in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained – or at least that every role will be filled with a recognisable face. The latest to join the throng is Sacha Baron Cohen who Variety says is in final negotiations to join the cast.

Baron Cohen will play Scotty, a gambler who purchases Django’s slave wife (Kerry Washington) to use as a female companion. Scotty is apparently a smaller role, but he plays a vital part in the story.

Baron Cohen will join a cast which includes Jamie Foxx as Django and Leonardo DiCaprio as evil plantation owner Calvin Candie, along with Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell and Laura Cayouette.
