Suicide Squad – Extended Cut (Blu-ray Review)

December 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto
Director: David Ayer
Running Time: 134 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 5th 2016 (UK)

Suicide Squad may have been this year’s most anticipated movie. After the underwhelming Man Of Steel and the ho-hum Batman vs. Superman, the trailers made it look like this was the fun, mischievous shot-in-the-arm that the DC Universe needed to really get it up and running, as well as being a counterpoint to the Marvel movies but which wouldn’t be as dour as the previous DC films. However, when the reviews came in, it was generally agreed by the critics the movie was a messy misfire (although it did okay at the box office).

Now it’s coming to Blu-ray and VoD in Extended Cut form, which adds in 10-minutes of extra footage. As with the Ultimate Edition of Batman vs. Superman, the extra scenes do help, but they’re unlikely to change anyone’s overall opinion of the movie. [Read more…]

Suicide Squad Gets Some Crazy New Character Posters

June 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-character-poster8-slideWhile there are a lot of people excited about Suicide Squad, it’s one of the big unknowns of the summer, and it’s likely that after seeing these new character posters, a lot of people still won’t know what to think. What it certainly continues to do is suggest this isn’t going to be a typical comic book movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From director David Ayer (“Fury,” “End of Watch”) comes “Suicide Squad,” starring Oscar nominee Will Smith (“Ali,” “The Pursuit of Happyness”), Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Focus”), Joel Kinnaman (“Run All Night,” “The Killing”) and Oscar nominee Viola Davis (“The Help,” “Doubt”).

‘It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

‘Written and directed by Ayer based on the characters from DC Comics, the film also stars Jai Courtney (“Insurgent”), Jay Hernandez (“Takers”), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (“Thor: The Dark World”), Ike Barinholtz (“Neighbors”), Scott Eastwood (“Fury”), Cara Delevingne (“Paper Towns”), Adam Beach (“Cowboys & Aliens”), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.’

The film will be in cinemas in August. [Read more…]

New Suicide Squad Trailer – DC Comics villains become a band on unlikely heroes, maybe?

April 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-cast-photo2-slideThe new trailer for Suicide Squad is keen to show that this is going to be a rather different kind of comic book movie, and that it’s not going to just pay lip service to the fact the heroes are actually a bunch of villains. It does look like it could be fund though, and may actually end up helping sell an interconnected DC Comics film universe more than the mixed reaction to Batman v Superman.

Suicide Squad Trailer – Can a truly villainous bunch of comic book baddies become the heroes?

January 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-poster1-slideSuicide Squad is definitely one of the more intriguing films of the year, especially as it brings together a bunch of villains from the DC Comics universe and will try to make them the (anti)heroes. While we’ve had a few pics and a first look promo, now we have out best look yet thanks to a great new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An all-star roster of actors has joined new action adventure Suicide Squad, bringing DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen under the direction of David Ayer (“Fury”). The film will star two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Ali,” “Focus”) as Deadshot; Joel Kinnaman (“Run All Night”, “Robocop”) as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Focus,” upcoming the “Tarzan” movie) as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Alexander”) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (“Divergent,” “The Water Diviner”) as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (“Anna Karenina,” upcoming “Pan”) as Enchantress.

‘Ayer is also writing the script for Suicide Squad, which is being produced by Charles Roven (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) and Richard Suckle (“American Hustle”).  Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns are serving as executive producers.’

The film is based around that a group of captured villains are given a chance at redemption as long as they team up and take on a mission that none of them are expected to survive. The film will be in cinemas in August, but you can take a look at the trailer and a new poster below.

The Suicide Squad Get Graffiti Character Logo Posters

January 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-cast-photo2-slideIt seems 2016 may be the year when popular franchises try something different, such as the X-Men spin-off Deadpool, which is so crazy it’s just been banned in China, and Rogue One, which promises to be a different kind of Star Wars story. There’s also Warner/DC’s Suicide Squad, which looks like it might be fun and does supposedly tie into the comic book universe they’re creating with the likes of Batman v Superman, but is likely to be rather different in tone.

To help us see this may not be a typical comic book flick, a set of graffiti-style character posters have been released, which you can take a look at below.

Child 44 (Blu-ray Review)

August 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman
Director: Daniel Espinosa
Running Time: 137 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 24th 2015 (UK)

When it was first announced Child 44 seemed like a good bet – based on a hit book, directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Easy Money) and a really good cast. However, when it arrived in cinemas it was met with bad reviews and made hardly any money at the box office.

I’m not entirely sure where all the animosity came from though, as while it has quite a few problems it’s certainly tense, uneasy and very watchable.

Set in post-World War II Soviet Russia, Tom Hardy is Leo Demidov, an investigator for the feared MGB who roots out traitors for Stalin. The organisation is judge, jury and executioner – and it extracts ways to find guilt in everyone they arrest. It’s an era of massive paranoia and one where deviating from the official line on something can be a death sentence. [Read more…]

Suicide Squad First Look Trailer – The DC Comics bad guys get a shot at redemption

July 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-cast-photo2-slideWhile it’s a safe bet Batman v Superman will do good business, 2015’s other major DC Comics adaptation, Suicide Squad, is a more uncertain proposition. It’s not surprising then that the film wanted to use Comic Con to introduce the world to the movie and they’ve now released the first look trailer for us all to see.

It’s certainly a potentially cool one, with a very detailed and different kind of comic book world to the one we’re used to – and the trailer also seems keen to silence those who’d already pre-judged Jared Leto as being wrong for The Joker.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An all-star roster of actors has joined new action adventure Suicide Squad, bringing DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen under the direction of David Ayer (“Fury”).

‘The film will star two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Ali,” “Focus”) as Deadshot; Joel Kinnaman (“Run All Night”, “Robocop”) as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Focus,” upcoming the “Tarzan” movie) as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Alexander”) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (“Divergent,” “The Water Diviner”) as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (“Anna Karenina,” upcoming “Pan”) as Enchantress.

Take Your First Look At Will Smith, Jai Courtney & Co. In Costume For Suicide Squad

May 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-cast-photo2Suicide Squad has only just started shooting, but director David Ayer is taking a rather different tack with the film than the usual secrecy that surrounds superhero movies, as he’s keen to share pics. It makes sense as currently few non-comic book fans know much about it, even if they may have heard of some of the characters, so getting the word out early is going to help.

A few days ago Ayer posted the first pic of Jared Leto in full Joker make-up, and before that we got many of the cast gathered together for a table read. Now he’s given us a glance at the Suicide Squad in costume, all looking pretty rough and tough. Indeed, it took me a second glance to realise that it was Will Smith third from the right.

In the image from left to right there is Adam Beach as Slipknot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, and Jay Hernandez as El Diablo.

While little has been released about the movie, the reason Leto isn’t there is that he’s the villain these guys are after. Most of them are bad guys themselves, who’ve all been locked up but are given a chance at redemption by teaming up for a mission none of them are expected to survive. That team becomes known as Task Force X.

Suicide Squad is due out August 2016.

Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman & The Rest Of The Suicide Squad Cast Unite For A Photo

April 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suicide-squad-cast-photoDC/Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad is going into production very soon and to prepare the cast have gotten together for a read-through of the script, and to mark the occasion director David Ayer has posted a great cast photo on Twitter.

Ayer appears in the pic with Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Will Smith (Deadshot), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jay Hernandez (unknown), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Karen Fukuhara (unknown) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).

Ike Barinholtz and Adam Beach are also included, although as this is the first we knew of them being in the movie, there’s no info on who they’ll play. There’s no Jared Leto on hand, who’s playing The Joker, but it’s not clear why not.

The movie revolveds around an array of supervillains, who have all been captured but are offered the chance for redemption by taking on a mission from which none of them are expected to return alive.
David Ayer is set to direct, with an August 5th, 2016 release date already been set. [Read more…]

Joel Kinnaman May Replace Tom Hardy In Suicide Squad

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joel-KinnamanWhen the cast for Suicide Squad was announced, Tom Hardy was amongst the throng. However when the filming dates slipped slightly he was out, with his schedule meaning he could no longer play Rick Flagg.

Now they may have found a replacement, as TheWrap reports Joel Kinnaman is in talks for the part. Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal were also in consideration, but it’s Kinnaman who’s bagged it.

Assuming he signs on the dotted line, he’ll join Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).
