Logan (DVD Review) – Wolverine & Professor X sure say f**k more than they used to!

July 7, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant
Director: James Mangold
Running Time: 137 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 10th 2017 (UK)

There have been increasing grumblings in some circles that too many superhero movies feel like they’ve come off a production line and are all pretty much the same as one another. Included in that grumbling has been Fox’s X-Men movies, but in the last couple of years they’ve also produced two standalone movies set in that universe – Deadpool and now Logan – that have really felt different and have shown that there are all sorts of possibilities in the world of comic books.

Although Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has had two previous non X-Men movies, this is a very different beast to the earlier film, having more in common with a western or a road movie than a traditional superhero film. [Read more…]

Table 19 Trailer – Anna Kendrick sits down with Lisa Kudrow, Craig Robinson & more

July 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

table-19-slideSynopsis: ‘Ex-maid of honor Eloise (Anna Kendrick) – having been relieved of her duties after being unceremoniously dumped by the best man via text – decides to hold her head up high and attend her oldest friend’s wedding anyway. She finds herself seated at the ‘random’ table in the back of the ballroom with a disparate group of strangers, most of whom should have known to just send regrets (but not before sending something nice off the registry).

‘As everyone’s secrets are revealed, Eloise learns a thing or two from the denizens of Table 19. Friendships – and even a little romance – can happen under the most unlikely circumstances.’

Written by the Duplass brothers and directed by Jeffrey Blitz, Table 19 also stars Lisa Kudrow, Craig Robinson, June Squibb, Stephen Merchant,Tony Revolori and Wyatt Russell. It should be out early next year. [Read more…]

I Give It A Year (DVD)

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rafe Spall, Rose Byrne, Anna Faris, Simon Baker, Stephen Merchant
Director: Dan Mazer
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 3rd 2013

There’s a lot of criticism that most romantic comedies just go by-the-book, presenting exactly the same story over and over again. So if a rom-com tries to do something a little different, it should be applauded. It’s just a shame that with I Give It A Year, it doesn’t really work.

As the marketing has been keen to tell us, I Give It A Year starts where other rom-coms end. After a whirlwind romance, Josh (Rafe Spall) and Nat (Rose Byrne) get married, even though many of their friends aren’t sure it’s a good match. It’s not long before the cracks begin to show, with the little niggles of their relationship becoming more and more difficult to take. [Read more…]

I Give It A Year Trailer – Stephen Merchant turns best man

November 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first trailer for the British comedy I Give It A Year has arrived, which teams up the likes of Anna Faris, Olivia Colman, Rose Byrne, Simon Baker, Rafe Spall, Minnie Driver and Stephen Merchant, for a movie that looks at the realities, trials and tribulations of the first year of marriage. Merchant gets the plum role in this promo, giving a truly cringe-inducing best man speech, in a way only he can.

Dan Mazer makes his feature-directorial debut, having spent years writing and producing with Sasha Baron Cohen on everything from Ali G to The Dictator. The film is due to hit UK cinemas on 8th February 2013, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

And while we’re hit, why is it nearly every British comedy in the past few years seems to have been about weddings? It’s not even like they’re inherently successful, as everything from The Knot to The Wedding Video have proved. Maybe looking at the first year of marriage can broaden things out a bit.
