Logan (DVD Review) – Wolverine & Professor X sure say f**k more than they used to!

July 7, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant
Director: James Mangold
Running Time: 137 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 10th 2017 (UK)

There have been increasing grumblings in some circles that too many superhero movies feel like they’ve come off a production line and are all pretty much the same as one another. Included in that grumbling has been Fox’s X-Men movies, but in the last couple of years they’ve also produced two standalone movies set in that universe – Deadpool and now Logan – that have really felt different and have shown that there are all sorts of possibilities in the world of comic books.

Although Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has had two previous non X-Men movies, this is a very different beast to the earlier film, having more in common with a western or a road movie than a traditional superhero film. [Read more…]

Logan Super Bowl Spot – Hugh Jackman returns for one last mutant adventure

February 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been some pretty good buzz about Logan, and from what we’ve seen it’s like nothing we’ve seen from the X-Men universe before, which is underlined by this Super Bowl spot. It certainly shows that this is a far cry from Days Of Future Past, Apocalypse, or even The Wolverine. But it does look like it might be good.

Here’s the short synopsis: ‘In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.’

What that doesn’t quite get across is the rather bleak, western feel. The film is out March 1st. You can watch the Super Bowl spot and a new clip below. [Read more…]

New Logan Trailer – Wolverine and Professor X get caught up in a near future Western

January 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been some pretty good buzz about Logan, with some suggesting it’s nothing like we’ve seen – especially from the X-Men universe – and could be something genuinely special. The new trailer certainly lays it out there that this is a far cry from Days Of Future Past, Apocalypse, or even The Wolverine.

What that doesn’t quite get across is the rather bleak, western feel, an odd multi-generational dysfunctional family dynamic, and the fact that Patrick Stewart’s Professor X says ‘Fuck’ (we’d expect that from James Stewart’s young Xavier, but not Patrick’s!). The film’s out March 1st.

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Logan Trailer – The future’s not bright for Wolverine and Professor X

October 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

logan-trailer-slideIt certainly doesn’t look like there’s a bright, shiny future for mutants if this first trailer for Logan is anything to go by. Indeed, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) himself is scarred, increasingly grizzled and dejected, while Patrick Stewart’s Professor X seems to be on his last legs. But perhaps there’s one last shot at redemption.

The girl in the trailer is believed to be a semi-clone of Wolverine, who he must protect. As you’ll see from the trailer, it’s got a rather dark, weary, western tone (helped by the choice of Johnny Cash on the soundtrack), with suggestions this could be R-rated.

Jackman has said this will be his last movie playing the characters, having outlasted any other actor playing a superhero (to put it in context, he first played Wolverine before Sam Raimi’s Spider-man, which is now the Spideys ago), and there is a note of finality in this trailer. What’s perhaps just as interesting is how this will fit into the larger X-Men universe, or whether once more it will will muddy the continuity waters. The film is due out next March. [Read more…]

Richard E. Grant Is Set To Get Villainous In Wolverine 3

April 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Richard-E-GrantWhile we’ve still got a few weeks left until we get to see the next X-Men movie, Apocalypse, things are already moving fast on the next standalone Wolverine movie. The film has just added a new bad guy, as THR reports that British actor Richard E. Grant will play a ‘villainous mad-scientist type’ in the movie.

However, there’s no more info of the character than that, including whether it’s someone who’s been see in the comics or whether it’s someone brand new. Indeed, there’s been very little info at all about the plot, other than that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will reteam with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X.

It’s not even known whether this film will continue with the original movie timeline, or will take into account the changes that happened due to the events of Days Of Future Past. As the recent Apocalypse trailer showed us that Wolverine is set to make a surprise appearance in that movie, it may be that film which helps set up how this new standalone Wolverine movie fits into the overall mythology.

James Mangold is set to direct, with a March 2017 release set.

Match (DVD Review)

October 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Patrick Stewart, Carla Gugino, Matthew Lillard
Director: Stephen Belber
Running Time: 92 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 12th 2015 (UK)

In 1995 Patrick Stewart played a flamboyantly gay character in the wonderful Jeffrey. Now he’s returned to the LGBT arena for Match. He plays aging Juilliard ballet teacher Tobi, who agrees to meet with a woman called Lisa (Carla Gugino) to help with her dissertation about dance in 1960s New York.

Lisa arrives at Tobi’s apartment with her cop husband, Mike (Matthew Lillard). The interview initially seems to go well, until Tobi begins to get suspicious that there is something else going on. It becomes clear that Lisa and Mike are there trying to figure out whether Tobi is Mike’s father, as while he’s lived most of his life as a gay man, in the past Tobi has slept with women, including Mike’s mother. If Tobi is Mike’s dad, it doesn’t appear it’s going to be an easy family reunion. [Read more…]

Patrick Stewart Reminisces About His Flamboyant First Gay Role, In 1994’s Jeffrey

May 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

patrcik-stewart-jeffreyIn the mid 1990s the film Jeffrey seemed fast on its way to becoming a gay classic, but since then many seem to have forgotten about it (indeed it’s been out of print on DVD in the UK for years). For those who do know it though, one of the most memorable things is undoubtedly Patrick Stewart’s incredibly flamboyant Sterling.

It was the first gay role Stewart had ever played, which he took on shortly after spending seven years cementing his stern manliness and sci-fi god credentials in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Now Patrick has been reminiscing about the film with DNA magazine, and how liberating it was. He says, “Jeffrey was the first. It was 1994 and we had just wrapped the seventh and final season of Star Trek and I said to my agent, ‘Find me a job. I don’t care what i is but let it be as far removed from science fiction and outer space as possible!’ And very shortly he rang me and said, ‘I’ve got it! There’s a movie they’re making called Jeffrey…’ I had seen Paul Rudnick’s wonderful play here in New York and I met with the director.

“I think that was my first time playing an openly gay character and I enjoyed it immensely. Having led a life in the theater, I had been in the company of homosexual men and women from [the time I was] a teenager. It was familiar and completely normal. When we were prepping for the movie, the production designer said he wanted to have lots of photographs around Sterling’s apartment — of them on holiday and with friends and so forth — so how would you feel if you and Bryan [Batt] and Steve Weber [who played Jeffrey] go off and walk around the West Village. It was a Saturday afternoon during a hot summer, so without quite knowing exactly where he was with his camera we spent a couple of hours just hanging out and it was the loveliest experience. Liberating. And intimate. And fun.”

Jeffrey itself is a comedy about a gay man who decides that with the spectre of AIDS all around him, he should become celibate. But in true rom-com fashion he then immediately meets his perfect man, and must come to terms with his fears if he’s ever going to find love.

Patrick Stewart Reckons Supporting Gay Rights Is ‘Natural’ For Him

January 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

patrick-stewartPatrick Stewart has long shown his gay friendly credentials – and even had bestie Ian McKellen officiate at his wedding. Indeed it’s resulted in him being mistaken for gay himself at time, most notably in a 2014 Guardian article. However the X-Men star doesn’t mind, and in a recent interview with The Advocate he’s even described himself as ‘flattered’ by it.

Even at the time, he didn’t seem to mind, as he joked on Twitter that he had, “like, five or even SEVEN hetero friends and we totally drink beer and eat lots of chicken wings!”

Now he says, “I wasn’t going to get all upset and stuffy about somebody being a little bit careless in their research. Or frankly who had looked at some of the evidence and made an assumption.”

He adds, “Indeed the first contact I had was from Ian McKellen, who sent me an email saying, ‘Congratulations!’ And I accepted the congratulations and said, ‘I think this is a very distinctive honor that I’ve been awarded.’”

The former Jean-Luc Picard also feels that his supporting gay rights isn’t surprising, saying “I think this is where the theater is such an appealing world, because it embraces everything and always has. So there was never a moment where I made an intellectual choice that I would be a supporter of gay civil rights. It was always a natural and uncomplicated choice.”

How Good Are Patrick Stewart And Ian McKellen At The Newlywed Game?

April 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart are ridiculously good besties who are fond of walking through New York holding hands and wearing bowler hats (they are British after all, so despite they fact they’re in the US, they wouldn’t be wearing derbys).

And don’t worry, Patrick’s wife doesn’t seem to mind all this.

They’ve also starred in the X-Men movies together and have teamed up on stage several times, most recently for a New York production of Waiting for Godot/No Man’s Land, which closed at the end of last month.

But how much do they really know about one another?

Well, the BFFs headed over to Buzzfeed and took part in version of The Newlywed Game (which as Brits they’d know as Mr. And Mrs.), where they had to answer questions about one another – and it turns out they’re as good at it as most married couples. There was also a chance for them to do impressions of each others. Take a look above and below.
