Director: Stephen Belber
Running Time: 92 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 12th 2015 (UK)

In 1995 Patrick Stewart played a flamboyantly gay character in the wonderful Jeffrey. Now he’s returned to the LGBT arena for Match. He plays aging Juilliard ballet teacher Tobi, who agrees to meet with a woman called Lisa (Carla Gugino) to help with her dissertation about dance in 1960s New York.

Lisa arrives at Tobi’s apartment with her cop husband, Mike (Matthew Lillard). The interview initially seems to go well, until Tobi begins to get suspicious that there is something else going on. It becomes clear that Lisa and Mike are there trying to figure out whether Tobi is Mike’s father, as while he’s lived most of his life as a gay man, in the past Tobi has slept with women, including Mike’s mother. If Tobi is Mike’s dad, it doesn’t appear it’s going to be an easy family reunion. [Read more…]

This Aussie drama is about a group of young men who all belong to a surf lifesaving club. Len is a long-time member and the most successful of the group, having won numerous championships and lifesaver of the year awards. His life is shaken up with the arrival of the younger Phil, who saves someone from drowning on his first day and proceeds to show he could well be a challenger to Len’s crown.

However, it’s not just his fitness and lifesaving skills that Len has difficulty with, but also the fact he is attracted to the young man – something he doesn’t want to deal with. Phil meanwhile is well aware that he is gay and he has a boyfriend, even if he keeps that quiet at the club. Tension begins to grow, and as Len finds it increasingly difficult to deal with his feelings, they threaten to erupt in extremely dangerous ways. [Read more…]

Boy Meets Girl (2015) (DVD Review)

October 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rebecca Root, Harry Hepple, Denise Welch, Jonny Dixon, Nigel Betts
Director: Paul Norton Walker
Running Time: 180 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 12th 2015 (UK)

Leo (Harry Hepple) is a young man in his mid-20s who isn’t exactly good at romance and dating. Then he meets Judy (Rebecca Root) and there’s an immediate spark, so he decides to invite her out on a date. Once they’re at a restaurant she lets him know that she is transgender, something Leo doesn’t seem too bothered about (although it does cause a few ripples later on).

They both know that while neither of them care, the same won’t necessarily be true of everyone, and they may also have a few other obstacles to overcome on the way to true love. However, the thing that most people want to comment on when they initially see Judy is the age gap between her and Leo, as she is nearing 40.

Across the course of six episodes Boy Meets Girl charts their relationship, as they negotiate the issues of transgender dating, from when to tell his family, to dealing with sex, as well as the viciousness of transphobic people. [Read more…]

San Andreas (Blu-ray Review)

October 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Paul Giamatti
Director: Brad Peyton
Running Time: 114 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 12th 2015 (UK)

If you’d hoped that having Lost’s Carlton Cuse writing the screenplay would result in San Andreas being a more cerebral form of disaster movie, you should realise he was also an executive producer on Nash Bridges, so he is not averse to more straightforward entertainment. Indeed, it’s almost like he watched every Roland Emmerich movies – from 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow to Independence Day and Godzilla – and then used that as his template, but cut out anything too intelligent.

There is little to surprise here, although it certainly delivers on the large sale mayhem.

Dwayne Johnson is Los Angeles helicopter rescue pilot Ray, who’s dealing with the collapse of his marriage following the death of one of his children. However, he’s soon going to have more than that to worry about (actually, that’s not true as that’s all he cares about), when earthquakes start devastating California, starting at the Hoover Dam and then working its way up to San Francisco. And wouldn’t you know it, Ray’s daughter is in San Francisco, and so he sets off to rescue her, dodging city destroying shaking, tsunamis and general building destroying catastrophe along the way, as the San Andreas fault splits apart, resulting in the biggest quakes ever known.
