Logan (DVD Review) – Wolverine & Professor X sure say f**k more than they used to!

July 7, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant
Director: James Mangold
Running Time: 137 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 10th 2017 (UK)

There have been increasing grumblings in some circles that too many superhero movies feel like they’ve come off a production line and are all pretty much the same as one another. Included in that grumbling has been Fox’s X-Men movies, but in the last couple of years they’ve also produced two standalone movies set in that universe – Deadpool and now Logan – that have really felt different and have shown that there are all sorts of possibilities in the world of comic books.

Although Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has had two previous non X-Men movies, this is a very different beast to the earlier film, having more in common with a western or a road movie than a traditional superhero film. [Read more…]

Logan Super Bowl Spot – Hugh Jackman returns for one last mutant adventure

February 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been some pretty good buzz about Logan, and from what we’ve seen it’s like nothing we’ve seen from the X-Men universe before, which is underlined by this Super Bowl spot. It certainly shows that this is a far cry from Days Of Future Past, Apocalypse, or even The Wolverine. But it does look like it might be good.

Here’s the short synopsis: ‘In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.’

What that doesn’t quite get across is the rather bleak, western feel. The film is out March 1st. You can watch the Super Bowl spot and a new clip below. [Read more…]

New Logan Trailer – Wolverine and Professor X get caught up in a near future Western

January 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been some pretty good buzz about Logan, with some suggesting it’s nothing like we’ve seen – especially from the X-Men universe – and could be something genuinely special. The new trailer certainly lays it out there that this is a far cry from Days Of Future Past, Apocalypse, or even The Wolverine.

What that doesn’t quite get across is the rather bleak, western feel, an odd multi-generational dysfunctional family dynamic, and the fact that Patrick Stewart’s Professor X says ‘Fuck’ (we’d expect that from James Stewart’s young Xavier, but not Patrick’s!). The film’s out March 1st.

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Logan Trailer – The future’s not bright for Wolverine and Professor X

October 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

logan-trailer-slideIt certainly doesn’t look like there’s a bright, shiny future for mutants if this first trailer for Logan is anything to go by. Indeed, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) himself is scarred, increasingly grizzled and dejected, while Patrick Stewart’s Professor X seems to be on his last legs. But perhaps there’s one last shot at redemption.

The girl in the trailer is believed to be a semi-clone of Wolverine, who he must protect. As you’ll see from the trailer, it’s got a rather dark, weary, western tone (helped by the choice of Johnny Cash on the soundtrack), with suggestions this could be R-rated.

Jackman has said this will be his last movie playing the characters, having outlasted any other actor playing a superhero (to put it in context, he first played Wolverine before Sam Raimi’s Spider-man, which is now the Spideys ago), and there is a note of finality in this trailer. What’s perhaps just as interesting is how this will fit into the larger X-Men universe, or whether once more it will will muddy the continuity waters. The film is due out next March. [Read more…]

The Third Wolverine Will Be Called Logan, As It Gets A Poster

October 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

logan-posterEver since it was first announced, the next Wolverine movie has lacked a title. That omission began to seem increasingly glaring at its March 2017 release date got closer and closer.

However, now the first poster has arrived, which lets us know the film will be called Logan.

There’s still no official synopsis, but the poster gives us a hint, with the adamantium clawed one holding a child’s hand. It is his child? Is it a random youngster he has to protect? Or is it, as some have suggested, the female Wolverine clone that’s been rumoured to feature in the movie? It’s been suggested we’ll get a teaser trailer soon, which will hopefully let us know a little more.

Until then, enjoy the poster.

Richard E. Grant Is Set To Get Villainous In Wolverine 3

April 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Richard-E-GrantWhile we’ve still got a few weeks left until we get to see the next X-Men movie, Apocalypse, things are already moving fast on the next standalone Wolverine movie. The film has just added a new bad guy, as THR reports that British actor Richard E. Grant will play a ‘villainous mad-scientist type’ in the movie.

However, there’s no more info of the character than that, including whether it’s someone who’s been see in the comics or whether it’s someone brand new. Indeed, there’s been very little info at all about the plot, other than that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will reteam with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X.

It’s not even known whether this film will continue with the original movie timeline, or will take into account the changes that happened due to the events of Days Of Future Past. As the recent Apocalypse trailer showed us that Wolverine is set to make a surprise appearance in that movie, it may be that film which helps set up how this new standalone Wolverine movie fits into the overall mythology.

James Mangold is set to direct, with a March 2017 release set.

Boyd Holbrook In Talks To Be Wolverine 3’s Villain

April 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Boyd-HolbrookHugh Jackman has suggested that after the next Wolverine movie he’ll be done with the character (although he’s said that before), so if this is his swansong, you’d hope he’d have a good baddie to fight against. Now we may know who’ll be playing that villain, as Deadline reports that Narcos star Boyd Holbrook is in talks for the role.

Not a vast amount is known about who Holbrook will be playing, and there’s not too much point speculating as it appears that rather than finding someone from the comics, Holbrook will play an original character who’s causing Wolverine some trouble. However, it has been revealed he’ll be ‘a relentless, calculating and intense head of security for a global enterprise’.

James Mangold will once more direct the movie, which is currently set for release March 2017. The movie will also see Patrick Stewart return as the older Professor Xavier.

Hugh Jackman Shares First Wolverine Sequel Pic As He Prepares To Bid Goodbye To The Character

July 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wolverine-sequel-promo-pic1Fox has a lot of X-Men in the works, with Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse and possibly Gambit next year, and then a currently untitled Wolverine sequel set for 2017. Plus there’s talk of X-Men and Fantastic Four crossing over.

While the Wolverine movie – which Hugh Jackman has said will be his last time playing the character – hasn’t gone in front of the camera yet, the actor has released a promo pic via Twitter, along with the message ‘My last time putting on the claws. What do you want to see happen? 50 words or less. I’ll read as many as I can.’

It’s not been confirmed what the movie will be about, but rumours suggest it will be based on the Old Man Logan storyline, which is set at a time when Wolverine is trying to live a quiet, simple life in a world dominated by superviallian, but is pulled back into the world of mutants when he’s asked to help deliver a package. James Mangold will once more direct.

David James Kelly Writing Wolverine 3, With Hugh Jackman Likely To Return

March 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wolverine-review-slideJust a few days ago director James Mangold revealed that after 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, they’re already working on another standalone Wolverine movie. Since then Fox has moved fast to fill in the blanks, announcing that it’ll be in cinemas March 3rd, 2017 and Deadline adds that the studio has hired screenwriter David James Kelly to write the script.

What wasn’t clear when Mangold first mentioned Wolverine 3 was whether Hugh Jackman would be returning for this new movie. The actor has suggested several times that he planned to step away from his mutant character (at least for a while) following this year’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past – which marks the seventh film he’s played the role in (and it’s not known if he’ll also be in Apocalypse).

However Deadline claims that Jackman will be back, although it’s not clear if this is just a strong possibility or whether a contract is actually in the works.

Wolverine 3 Coming After X-Men: Apocalypse, But Will Hugh Jackman Return?

March 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Wolverine-preview-pic6Fox sure loves the X-Men. They’ve spent more on the upcoming Days Of Future Past than on any film in the studio’s history other than Avatar, and even though that film hasn’t been release yet, they’re already deep in development on X-Men: Apocalypse.

And it seems that’s not the end of the plans, as The Wolverine director James Mangold has tweeted that after that movie comes Apocalypse comes Wolverine 3.

He says, ‘@R__E__D_R__U__M @20centuryfox @ShuDonner We are figuring it all out. At the moment, I’m shooting The next #Wolverine after #XmenApocalypse.— Mangold (@mang0ld)’

That leaves some big questions though, the biggest of which being whether Hugh Jackman will star in it. He’s suggested that after Days Of Future Past he wants to take a break from the character. He’s been playing Wolverine now for 14 years in seven different movies, which is longer than anyone has stuck with a single superhero character. He may well be enticed back, but it’s likely Fox will move forward with the character whether Jackman is on board on not.

As Mangold point out on Twitter, ‘With cost of 117M and WW gross of 415M (#2 of all X’s), of course there’ll be another Wolverine solo. Manufactured internet drama is boring!’

However with two other mutant movies to hit cinemas before Wolverine 3, don’t expect it until 2017 at the earliest.
