Fox sure loves the X-Men. They’ve spent more on the upcoming Days Of Future Past than on any film in the studio’s history other than Avatar, and even though that film hasn’t been release yet, they’re already deep in development on X-Men: Apocalypse.
And it seems that’s not the end of the plans, as The Wolverine director James Mangold has tweeted that after that movie comes Apocalypse comes Wolverine 3.
He says, ‘@R__E__D_R__U__M @20centuryfox @ShuDonner We are figuring it all out. At the moment, I’m shooting The next #Wolverine after #XmenApocalypse.— Mangold (@mang0ld)’
That leaves some big questions though, the biggest of which being whether Hugh Jackman will star in it. He’s suggested that after Days Of Future Past he wants to take a break from the character. He’s been playing Wolverine now for 14 years in seven different movies, which is longer than anyone has stuck with a single superhero character. He may well be enticed back, but it’s likely Fox will move forward with the character whether Jackman is on board on not.
As Mangold point out on Twitter, ‘With cost of 117M and WW gross of 415M (#2 of all X’s), of course there’ll be another Wolverine solo. Manufactured internet drama is boring!’
However with two other mutant movies to hit cinemas before Wolverine 3, don’t expect it until 2017 at the earliest.
