New Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk Teaser Trailer – Ang Lee does a military tale his own way

October 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

billy-lynns-long-halftime-walk-joe-alswynThere was a lot of anticipation for Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, partly because it’s Ang Lee’s first movie since the Oscar winning The Life Of Pi, and partly because he was planning something no one had done before – something made and projected in 3D at 120 frames per second (more than double The Hobbit’s 48fps). However, reviews from the New York Film Festival were middling, with some saying the high frame rate ruined the moviegoing experience.

The fact is though, the full 120fps will only be available in a handful of theatres (just two in the whole of the US), and the trailer does make it look very intriguing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Three-time Academy Award® winner Ang Lee brings his extraordinary vision to Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, based on the widely-acclaimed, bestselling novel. The film is told from the point of view of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn (newcomer Joe Alwyn) who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, the film reveals what really happened to the squad – contrasting the realities of the war with America’s perceptions. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund, with Vin Diesel, and Steve Martin. Lee used new technology, shooting at an ultra-high frame rate for the first time in film history, to create an immersive digital experience helping him dramatize war in a way never seen before.’

It’ll be out in cinemas towards the end of the year. It’s in US cinemas on November 11th and the UK on January 6th. [Read more…]

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk Teaser Trailer – First look at Ang Lee’s take on the military tale

May 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

billy-lynn-pic1The reports from those who saw the first footage gushed that it looked like once again Life Of Pi helmer Ang Lee had produced an incredible looking movie. Now we get to take a look for ourselves with the first teaser trailer. It certainly does a great job of suggesting this could be one hell of a movie and real Oscar contender.

Steve Martin Is Going To Magic Camp With Disney

August 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steve-MartinSteve Martin’s career started with Disney working at Disneyland in the 1950s, and the company has been a recurring theme throughout his career backing movies such as Father Of The Bride and Bringing Down The House.

Now Martin and Disney are reteaming for the comedy Magic Camp, according to THR. It really does take him back to his roots, as his Disneyland job included working at the Main Street Magic Shop, demonstrating tricks to potential customers.

In Magic Camp, Martin will play ‘a straight-laced banker who returns to Magic Camp, a camp he attended as a shy child. This time he is a counselor who makes it his mission to improve the lives of all the kids while keeping an eye on his ultimate prize, the top spot at the Golden Wand competition’.

Steve Martin wrote the most recent version of the screenplay alongside Stu Zicherman. No director is currently attached.

Steve Martin Says He Hasn’t Heard About A Gay Father Of The Bride 3

June 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

father-of-the-bride-1991Yesterday we reported on a story from NikkiFinke that Disney was working on a third film in the Father Of The Bride franchise, with the film set to revolve around a gay wedding.

While the original story suggested Steve Martin was set to star, the actor himself suggests otherwise. He took to Twitter to say, ‘So excited to read I’m doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven’t seen a script or been offered the role!’

The 1991 Father Of The Bride and its 1995 sequel followed Martin’s George Banks as he gave away his daughter and then had to learn to accept that she was now a woman. The third instalment was said to shift the focus to his son, Matty (originally played by Kieran Culkin), who’s now 29 and lets his parents know he intends to marry the son of a Navy SEAL.

It’s now difficult to say whether the film exists at all, or whether it’s just saying that Martin is involved is premature. Nikki Finke left Deadline, the website she founded, under rather acrimonious circumstances last year, saying she was going to build a new site that would leave her old one in the dust. However the insider exclusives that made Deadline both loved and hated by Hollywood have been rather thin on the ground for her new site, so she may have been jumping the gun here.

New Father Of The Bride Film Plans A Gay Wedding, With Steve Martin Returning

June 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

father-of-the-bride-1991How do you make a Father Of The Bride movie without a bride? As a result, don’t be surprised if the film changes its name to Father Of The Groom, but a third movie in the Steve Martin franchise is being planned, which will revolve around his gay son.

According to nikkifinke.com, a follow up to 1991’s Father Of The Bride and its 1995 sequel is in the works, which will see Steve Martin back as George Banks. While the first two movies followed Banks as he gave away his daughter and then had to learn to accept that she was now a woman, the third instalment will shift the focus to his son, Matty (originally played by Kieran Culkin), who’s now 29 and lets his parents know he intends to marry the son of a Navy SEAL.

George is apparently “thunderstruck and speechless”, as he’s not a big fan of all things gay. However in a show of solidarity with her child, George’s reaction results in his wife Nina (Diane Keaton) kicking him out of the house.

There are rights issues to be sorted, as while Disney/Touchstone made the 1991 and 1995 movies, Warner Bros now owns the original 1950 Father Of The Bride, starring Spencer Tracy, that the Steve Martin films were based on. Disney is apparently keen to make the new film and are currently trying to get the rights issues straightened. And with more and more US States allowing gay people to get married, it may allow them to catch the Zeitgeist (if the film is good).

Assuming everything is sorted out, original director and co-writer Charles Shyer will return to helm this third movie.
