300 Prequel Is No Longer Battle Of Artemisia

September 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the first movie hit box office gold, Warner Bros. has been working on a follow-up, which has been very slowly making its way to the screen. Now the studio has announced that the prequel is changing its name. Up until now it’s been known as 300: Battle of Artemisia, but has now been re-titled 300: Rise of an Empire.

Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom) is set to star as Themistocles, who leads a group of Spartan warriors to take on the mighty Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Eva Green plays Artemisia, the goddess who persuades Xerxes to do battle with these Greek soldiers. Jamie Blackley and Eva Green also star.

Noam Murro is directing from a script by 300 writers Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder, with production already under way. This is not the first time this project has underwent a title change. Initially known as Xerxes, last June is became 300: Battle of Artemisia and has now changed again. 300: Rise of an Empire should hit cinemas August 2nd, 2013. (Source: BoxOfficeMojo)

Young Hottie Jamie Blackley Added To 300 Prequel

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

He’s not exactly a household name yet, but 21-year-old Jamie Blackley scored a fairly high-profile role in London Boulevard and will be seen this summer in the big budget Snow White And The Huntsman. Now he’s booked another role that’ll almost certainly help out his fledgling film career, playing Calisto in 300: Battle Of Artemisia.

Calisto is a teen whose desire to become a heroic man/soldier like his father, leads the 16-year-old to become the leader of a small band of soldiers. He joins Sullivan Stapleton, who got a lead role in the movie last week.

300: Battle of Artemisia is based on the Frank Miller graphic novel, which is told from the point of view of Xerxes, the tyrannical ruler who was portrayed by Rodrigo Santoro in 300. The tale spans over hundreds of years as Xerxes tries to attain godhood, but mainly focuses on the Battle of Artemisia in 480 BC, where he went up against the brutish but brilliant Themistocles (the battle only took place in Artemisia as the rather corrupt Themistocles had accepted a bribe to keep his fleet in the city). This battle took place almost simultaneously to the one at Thermopylae, chronicled in 300. (Source: Deadline)

Sullivan Stapleton Takes 300: Battle Of Artemisia Lead

February 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although 300: Battle Of Artemesia is a prequel to the Gerard Butler starring hit, it follows different characters and so a whole new cast is needed. Now one piece of that puzzle has fallen into place, as Variety reports that Animal Kingdom star, Sullivan Stapleton is in final talks for a leading role in 300: Battle of Artemisia.

It isn’t known exactly what character Sullivan Stapleton will portray in 300: Battle of Artemisia, as there’s some confusion over whether it’ll be Xerxes or Themistocles, with most of the latest reports pointing to the latter. It would make sense for Rodrigo Santoro to return to play Xerxes (he’s apparently been in talks), as he’s one of the few characters who appears in both movies, with Battle Of Artemisia looking at his rivalry with Themistocles and quest for godhood.

A while ago, fellow Animal Kingdom star Joel Edgerton was in talks to star in 300: Battle of Artemisia, probably for the same role that Stapleton’s now taken, although he dropped out to join Kathryn Bigelow’s untitles hunt Osama Bin Laden project. Back in December Eva Green was in talks to portray Artemisia, but it isn’t known if that deal was ever finalized.

Noam Murro is directing 300: Battle of Artemisia from a screenplay by 300 co-writers Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad. It isn’t known when production will begin on 300: Battle of Artemisia.
