Will Ferrell Plans To Get Shakespearean (Sort Of) In A New Comedy

December 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-ferrellFew people would think of Will Ferrell as being someone you’d cast in a great Shakespearean role, and he seems to agree, as he’s set to star in a comedy where he’ll send up that idea, according to Variety.

Sony Pictures has acquired the currently untitled pitch from Mosaic, with Will Ferrell set to star. David Guion and Michael Handelman will write the screenplay, which is set in the apparently highly-competitive world of a Shakespearean theatre company.

Now much more is known about the plot than that, but you can certainly see Ferrell having fun being over the top in some of Shakespeare’s greatest roles (I’m imagining Ron Burgundy meets Laurence Olivier)

Will Ferrell May Play Russ Meyer In A Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls Biopic

August 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-ferrellIn the last few years Will Ferrell has been trying to mix big, broad mainstream comedies with more interesting indie fare (much of which have bombed spectacularly at the box office, but never mind). Now he’s circling another movie being made outside the studio system, as he may play legendary b-movie director filmmaker Russ Meyer  in the film Russ & Roger Go Beyond, according to Deadline.

The film is based on how Meyer – who’s best known for soft-core erotic films such as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! – was offered the chance to direct Beyond the Valley of the Dolls by 20th Century Fox.

Meyer agreed, but only under the condition that Roger Ebert, who was then a relatively minor film critic at the Chicago Sun Times, was hired to write the script, partly because Ebert wrote one of the few positive reviews of Meyer’s work.

Unsurprisingly the unconventional and non-Hollywood pairing had huge struggles working within the studio system and with the ratings board, who weren’t impressed by the movie’s sexy shenanigans. It became one of the few major studio releases that was released with an X rating, but the filmmakers were eventually vindicated when it became a profitable hit.

The project doesn’t have a director attached yet, although Edgar Wright has been rumoured, while actors such as Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen are said to be interested in playing Ebert.

Will Ferrell Wants To Be A Manimal

July 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-ferrellThe 1983 TV show Manimal only lasted eight episodes, but it’s taken on mythic proportions due to it’s wonderfully daft title and premise of being about a guy helps solve crimes by turning into all sorts of different animals.

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay think it’s an idea ripe for an action comedy makeover, as they will be working with Jimmy Miller’s Mosaic through their Gary Sanchez Productions banner to produce a feature film version, according to Variety.

The original show starred British actor Simon MacCorkindale as Dr. Jonathan Chase, a rich man raised in Africa who was a ‘master of the secrets that divide man from animal’. The film version will be a CG animated/Live-action hybrid.

Anchorman director Adam McKay comments, “I think it’s right down our alley, it’s what we do. It’s tongue-in-cheek and has an action component, but overall it’s a comedy. Like The Catcher In The Rye or The Sound And The Fury, Manimal has always been one of those elusive projects every producer dreams of taking to the silver screen. I know the movie will be funny and entertaining, but will it be the first film to win a Pulitzer? We’ll just have to see.”

It’s not clear is Will Ferrell will star, but it seems likely.

Will Ferrell & Mark Wahlberg Reuniting For Daddy’s Home

June 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

other-guys-slideMark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell had a big success with The Other Guys, and while there’s been talk of a sequel it’s never come off. However it seems they want to work together as they are is in talks to reunite for the Paramount comedy Daddy’s Home, according to Deadline.

Last year Ferrell was due to star opposite Vince Vaughn in the film, with Etan Cohen set to direct. However that never came together and so Mark Wahlberg has stepped in. The film is about a mild-mannered radio executive played by Ferrell, who wants to be the best stepfather he can be to his wife’s children. However, this gets complicated when their deadbeat biological father (Wahlberg) returns and forces Ferrell to fight for the kids’ affection.

Sean Anders and John Morris are in talks to direct from a screenplay by Brian Burns, Chris Henchy, Adam McKay and Etan Cohen. It’s not clear when it will go into production.

Adam McKay in Talks To Helm Marvel’s Ant-Man

May 31, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

adam-mckayAfter last week’s shock news that Edgar Wright was stepping away from Ant-Man despite working on it since 2006 (apparently he was upset with last minute script rewrites), Marvel has been scrambling to find a replacement, partly in the hope they wouldn’t have to delay the summer 2015 opening.

Now it seems they’ve found one, as AICN and Variety reports that frequent Will Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay has been offered the job.

It’s an interesting choice, as it suggests that Marvel still hopes Ant Man will be a comedy (there had been suggestions the rewrites had stripped out a lot of the humour), although perhaps a more mainstream one that the usually quirky Edgar Wright might have been hoping for. McKay has also worked with Paul Rudd on the likes of Anchorman – so a rapport with the leading man already exists – and the director has shown he can handle action with the likes of The Other Guys.

It will be more of an effects film than anything he’s done before though, although the likes of Talladega Nights has involved SFX work. It’ll be interesting to see if they bring in Will Ferrell in some capacity, as McKay has never directed a feature-length movie without him.

The director does have plenty of other films in the works, but if he signs on for Ant Man, he’ll have to drop everything else, especially if it’s going to keep its July 17th, 2015 release date.

Will Ferrell & Zach Galifianakis Will Share Larry’s Kidney For Director Richard Linklater

May 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zach-galifianakisWill Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis seemed to be have a good time making The Campaign, and now they’re planning to work together again as TheWrap reports they are reuniting for Larry’s Kidney, with Richard Linklater directing.

Based on Daniel Asa Rose’s memoir, Ferrell will play Rose (Will Ferrell), who travels to China with his slightly odd cousin (Galifianakis) and his mail-order bride, in the hope that they can get hold of a black market human kidney that will save his life.

It’s not clear when it will shoot, but it appears Hollywood is particularly interested in the story’s Chinese angle. China is the fastest growing movie market in the world, and while numerous blockbusters have tried to include some Chinese interest, it’s less common for a comedy. The studios will be interested to see whether it works.

Will Ferrell Will Try To Steal The Crown Jewels In The Yank

April 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will-FerrellIt’s the season for Will Ferrell to attach himself to new movies. He’s already added his name to a couple of project in the last few weeks, and now Deadline reports that Tri-Star Pictures has picked up the comedy pitch The Yank, which has Ferrell attached to star.

Steve Pink and Jeff Morris are set to write the script, which is about a timid insurance courier (Will Ferrell) who gets caught up in a plot to steal the Britich Crown Jewels in London.

It’s early days for the film at the moment as it’s only at the pitch stage and no director is currently attached.
The project doesn’t have a director attached at this time.

Unsurprisingly it’s not known when it will shoot.

Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly May Become Border Guards

April 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will-FerrellWill Ferrell and John C. Reilly have had a successful partnership with the likes of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Step Brothers. However it’s been a few years since they properly co-starred together (beyond Reilly’s uncredited cameo in Anchorman 2).

However now they’re planning to reunite for the comedy Border Guards, according to Deadline. It should also bring them back together with Talladega and Step brothers director Adam McKay.

Jesse Armstrong (In the Loop, Four Lions) came up with the script, which is about two friends (Ferrell and Reilly) who decide to become border patrol guards to add some purpose to their lives. Things get turned around when they accidentally get stranded in Mexico without identification and must try to sneak back into America.

It’s not clear yet when the movie might go into production.

Will Ferrell Will Play Tennis Against Billie Jean King In Match Maker

April 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will-FerrellLast year the documentary Battle Of The Sexes looked at the 1970s ‘Battle Of The Sexes’ tennis match, which Bobby Riggs take on Billie Jean King to test his theory that even a retired male tennis pro would be better than the world’s best woman. That doc has certainly ignited interest in taking the story to the big screen.

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Danny Boyle was looking into making a movie about the match, but now it’s got some competition as Variety reports that Will Ferrell has signed up to play Riggs in a rival movie called Match Maker.

This one is a comedy with a script by Steve Conrad (Walter Mitty), based on a 2013 ESPN article, ‘The Match Maker: Bobby Riggs, the Mafia and the Battle of the Sexes’.

It follows self-proclaimed chauvinist Riggs, who in the early 70s declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. To prove his point he challenged King to a match, but she declined. Margaret Court, who was then the top female player in the world agreed to take him on. She lost in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims.

King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation watched by over 50 million viewers.

Ferrell is a passionate tennis fan, so it wasn’t to tough to convince him to take the role.
