Margot Robbie Comes Into Focus, Starring Opposite Will Smith

July 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

margot-robbieMargot Robbie’s career should get a good boost soon thanks to a major role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street, and now she’s following that up with another big movie, as Variety reports that she’s landed the female lead opposite Will Smith in Focus.

The likes of Michelle Williams, Jessica Biel and Rose Byrne and Olivia Munn also tested for the role over the last few weeks, with the part coming down to a contest between Robbie and Munn. No official offer has apparently been made, but insiders says Robbie is the one who’s been chosen.

Smith and Robbie is certainly a different pairing than was originally planned, as the first idea was to have Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone re-team for the con-man movie, but timings couldn’t be worked out. Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck were also considered for the male lead, with Kristen Stewart also flirted with for the movie.

Now it finally seems the cast is sorted and the film can move forward, with Glenn Ficarra and John Requa directing. It ‘follows an inexperienced female con artist who teams up with a more seasoned male one’.

Will Smith Not Coming Back For Independence Day Sequels

June 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smith-independence-dayLast week 20th Century Fox confirmed a summer 2015 release for the Independence Day sequel, ID Forever. As Will Smith had said for years he was potentially interested in a follow-up, many thought the release date meant that he’d probably be back.

However now director Roland Emmerich has revealed to the NY Daily News that Will Smith is not starring in the sequel, saying, “Will Smith can not come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much.”

Back in 2011 it was reported that Smith was asked for a whopping $50 million to appear in the two-part ID Forever – Part 1 and ID Forever – Part 2, plus a large chunk of the box office. This apparently became a sticking point and so they’ve decided to go forward without the actor.

Roland Emmerich did say though that many original cast of Independence Day will be back. He says, “We have like maybe half of the people that you know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new.”

And while there’s been talk for years about this being two movies, it seems that initially Fox just wants to make one sequel and see how well that does before making a third.

Independence Day 2 Sets July 2015 Release Date

June 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smith-independence-dayIt’s been 17 years since Independence Day was released, and in all that time the likes of Will Smith and director Roland Emmerich have continued to talk about sequels. However it’s only in the last couple of years its seemed more like a reality, and there’s even been titles for two more films, ID Forever Parts One and Two.

Now its got even closer to the screen, as 20th Century Fox has set a July 3rd, 2015 release date for the first of those planned new movies. Of course, a date is no guarantee it’ll actually happen, but it’s a strong indication that things have progressed to the point where Fox is confident it’s likely to go forward.

No concrete details on the plot have been revealed, although Bill Pullman has said that he definitely wants to return, with Will Smith also likely to be back as Steven Hiller. Expect more info soon.

Will Smith Plans Modern Wild Bunch Remake

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

will-smithAfter slowing down for a couple of years, Will Smith seems to be back with a vengeance, as in the last couple of months he’s been busy filling his development slate. Now he got a new one, as he is in talks to star in and produce a modern remake of the The Wild Bunch for Warner Bros, according to TheWrap.

Sam Peckinpah directed the original movie, which starred William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, and Edmond O’Brien as a group of aging outlaws who plan one final score on the Texas-Mexico border. The reboot will be set in present day and focus on a crooked DEA agent who puts a team together to go after a Mexican drug lord’s fortune.

Back in January 2011, The Wild Bunch was mentioned as one of several titles Warner Bros. was looking to remake. Tony Scott was attached to direct, before he tragically died. David Ayer had been hired to write the screenplay for that version, but now Warner Bros. is seeking a new writer.

If a deal is finalised, Will Smith will produce alongside Jerry Weintraub, who he previously worked with on the 2010 The Karate Kid remake.

Oren Uziel Set to Write Men in Black 4 & Polish 21 Jump Street 2

May 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

men-in-black-3-slideFollowing the $600 million success of Men In Black 3, it’s not too surprising that Sony Pictures wants another one. Now they’re moving forward with Men in Black 4, hiring screenwriter Oren Uziel (The Kitchen Sink) to write the screenplay, according to TheWrap.

Uziel’s going to be busy, as the studio has also set the writer to re-write the script for 21 Jump Street 2. He’ll work on 21 Jump Street 2 script before moving on to Men In Black 4.

While some had wondered whether audiences would be interested in for Men In Black after such as long gap, but the third instalment turned out to be the highest grossing of the franchise. No details are known about the planned fourth film, and while it’s likely Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are open to returning, no deals have been set yet.

Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall’s wrote the original draft for 21 Jump Street 2. Sony recently confirmed a June 6, 2014 release, so it’s likely Uziel will be doing a polish rather than a complete overhaul. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will be back as Schmidt and Jenko, with Dave Franco likely returning as Eric Molson.

Will Smith Attached To American Can & The Accountant

April 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smithZwiWe’ve only had one new Will Smith movie in the last five years (Men In Black 3), but with the upcoming release of After Earth it seems he’s getting back in front of the camera properly, as just yesterday we reported he’s signed up to star in the drama Focus, and now Deadline reports he’s eyeing a couple of other movies too.

Smith is now attached to the drama American Can, which is currently hoping to get Ed Zwick to direct. The film is based on a true story and would see Smith as John Keller, a Gulf War veteran who, during Hurricane Katrina, helped gather 244 survivors in New Orleans’ American Can building, saving their lives in the process. Sony Pictures is backing the project, working from a script written by Adetoro Makinde and John Lee Hancock. At the moment it looks like it’s bee Smith next movie after Focus.

The actor may also star in The Accountant, a thriller that would have him play a a government accountant who doubles as an assassin. It’s the second time Smith has flirted with the movie, as he was previously looking into it when Mel Gibson was attached to direct.

Will Smith Replacing Ben Affleck In The Drama Focus

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smithIt’s all change on the Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love) movie Focus, as while Ben Affleck and Kristen Stewart had been due to star, they’ve now both left movie. They have found a replacement for Affleck though, with Variety reporting that Will Smith is in final talks to make the main role.

It’s Will Smith’s involvement that’s caused Kristen Stewart to leave, not because she doesn’t like Will, but due to the fact it was felt there was too big of an age gap between her and Will Smith (she’s 23, he’s 44).

The story follows a veteran con man (Will Smith) who takes an inexperienced grifter under his wing, before falling for her. Years later, they reunite and begin to complicate each others lives. Will Smith had reportedly been interested in the project for awhile, but only recently committed fully to the project.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are directing from their own original screenplay. There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Independence Day Sequels Plot Details Revealed

March 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smith-independence-dayIndependence Day 2 & 3 are sequel ideas that never die, with director Roland Emmerich and star Will Smith often hinting that they’re still in the works, but it’s only been recently that there’s seemed to be real impetus behind the idea – even though they’re still a fair way off – with the titles ID Forever Part One and ID Forever Part Two recently revealed.

Now Emmerich has given some info about the proposed plots of the sequels, which suggest they may be hoping to get Independence Day 2 in cinemas in three years time, exactly two decades after the first film. The filmmaker revealed to EW that the follow-up’s story is set 20 years after the first movie, centring on a distress call that was made by the first wave of aliens in Independence Day.

He says, “The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

Roland Emmerich wrote the screenplays for both ID Forever – Part 1 and ID Forever – Part 2, but now he’s handed them over to his White House Down writer, James Vanderbilt, to do a rewrite.

The director also said that the humans have embraced the alien technology in the years following the initial attack. “It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history,” he says. “[Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.”

Independence Day star Bill Pullman is on board for both movies, although Will Smith has not been confirmed quite yet. The filmmaker revealed this story will focus on a new generation of heroes, including the stepson of Will Smith’s character, played by Ross Bagley in the original. “It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over. The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].”

A 3D version of the original Independence Day Is due in cinemas this summer, and if that’s a success, it’ll certainly give more impetus to the sequels.

After Earth Trailer – M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi is looking good

March 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The second that Avatar hit it big, everyone in Hollywood was on the lookout for new sci-fi projects. However it always takes a long time to get a huge, effects filled movie into cinemas, so it’s only now that we’re seeing the wave of new sci-fi Avatar inspired, with the likes of Oblivion and M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth. The latter looks like it’s going to be pretty good – at least if this trailer is anything to go by.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. The film’s due in cinemas June 7th.
