Al Pacino & Brian De Palma Are Reuniting For Retribution

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

al-pacinoNeither Al Pacino nor director Brian De Palma are the all-conquering film names they were when they teamed up for the classic remake Scarface in 1983, or when they also had success a decade later with Carlito’s Way. They’ll be hoping then that a reunion can do both of them a little good, as Screendaily reports that they’re reteaming for Retribution.

The movie is a remake of a 2003 Belgian thriller called The Memory Of A Killer, and focuses ‘on the story of a hitman and a cop who will go to any length to stop a Philadelphia child prostitution ring.’ However if this follows the story of the original, the thing that makes it a little different is that the hitman has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s (indeed the original title translates as The Alzheimer Case), which alters his worldview and make him reassess his past and his future.

It’s not clear when the movie will shoot, but Retribution will be looking buyers shortly at the American Film Market.

Dressed To Kill (Blu-ray)

July 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson, Nancy Allen, Keith Gordon, Dennis Franz
Director: Brian De Palma
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: July 29th 2013

For years Brian De Palma has carried around the moniker of being a Hitchcock imitator, and it is perhaps Dressed To Kill more than any of his other movies that’s the cause of that. While it is its own beast, it’s hard to escape the fact that the movie borrows liberally from Hitchcock, particularly Vertigo and Psycho – from killing off the main character partway through to a fascination with sex and perversion.

However it’s slightly like Hitchcock on acid, as it’s far more overblown than the master, which has led to accusations of sexism and transphobia. Various people have tried to explain away these claims over the years, but it does sometimes seem like Dressed To Kill is punishing its characters for not conforming to sex and gender norms. New Passion Trailer – Rachel McAdams & Noomi Rapace get a little bit lesbian

July 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It certainly feels like Brian De Palma, director of The Untouchables and Scarface, has never quite left the 1980s behind, as you certainly get a feel of that decade in the latest trailer for Passion, which hits VOD and cinemas in the US in August (no UK date is currently set).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Brian De Palma returns to the sleek, sly, seductive territory of Dressed To Kill with an erotic corporate thriller fueled by sex, ambition, image, envy and the dark, murderous side of PASSION. The film stars Rachel McAdams (Midnight In Paris, Sherlock Holmes, Mean Girls) and Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) as two rising female executives in a multinational corporation whose fierce competition to rise up the ranks is about to turn literally cut-throat.’

To be honest, we’re not thinking it’s going to be great. [Read more…]

Al Pacino & Brian de Palma To Reunite for Joe Paterno Biopic, Happy Valley

January 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Al-PacinoIt seems director Brian De Palma and actor Al Pacino can only work together during years with a ‘3’ at the end, as we got Scarface in 1983, Carlito’s Way in 1993 and now in 2013 they’re getting back together for Happy Valley, a biopic based on the life of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

Al Pacino has been attached since last September to star in the project, which is based on Joe Posnanski’s biography, Paterno. The book delves into the coach’s life before becoming PSU’s head football coach back in 1966, as well as the influence he had over the school and his eventual downfall after a scandal that rocked the entire college football community.

Jerry Sandusky, Penn State’s defensive coordinator, was revealed as a paedophile who had sexually assaulted young boys for decades. Paterno was fired after 46 years at the school for his role in trying to cover up and ignore the scandal. He died last January at the age of 85.

It isn’t known when shooting may begin at this time. (Source: Deadline)

Passion Trailer – Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace want to lock lips

August 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

They’re really playing up the lesbian undertones of Passion, although I have a horrible feeling it’s more to appeal to the baser instincts of straight men than because this will actually be a good depiction of women’s desire. Brian De Palma teams up with Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams for a thriller about a young businesswoman plots murderous revenge after her boss and mentor steals her idea. The movie is a remake of the French movie, Love Crime. No release date is currently set.

Passion Poster – Rachel McAdams & Noomi Rapace lock lips

May 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

They’re really playing up the potential lesbian undertones of Passion, although I have a horrible feeling it’s more to appeal to the baser instincts of straight men than because this will actually be a good depiction of women’s desire. Hopefully I’m wrong, but the fact that both the first poster and the first image both see Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams about to kiss does suggest this is more about men’s desire than women’s.

The poster was released ahead of the movie looking for international distributors at Cannes.

Based on Alain Corneau’s film Crime d’amour, Passion is ‘An erotic thriller in the tradition of “Dressed To Kill” and “Basic Instinct” [neither of which were exactly great depictions of the LGBTQ community], Brian de Palma’s PASSION tells the story of a deadly power struggle between two women in the dog-eat-dog world of international business. Christine possesses the natural elegance and casual ease associated with one who has a healthy relationship with money and power. Innocent, lovely and easily exploited, her admiring protégé Isabelle is full of cutting-edge ideas that Christine has no qualms about stealing. They’re on the same team, after all… Christine takes pleasure in exercising control over the younger woman, leading her one step at a time ever deeper into a game of seduction and manipulation, dominance and humiliation. But when Isabelle falls into bed with one of Christine’s lovers, war breaks out. On the night of the murder, Isabelle is at the ballet, while Christine receives an invitation to seduction. From whom? Christine loves surprises. Naked she goes to meet the mystery lover waiting in her bedroom…’

Passion Photo – Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace prepare to lock lips

The first image has arrived from Brian De Palma’s upcoming thriller Passion, which suggests there’s going to be a bit of homoeroticism in this tale of two women locked in a power struggle. The pic above features Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams looking rather noir.

Dominic Cooper & Katherine Herfurth Have Passion

February 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a while now, Brian De Palma has been putting together a movie called Passion, which will be his first film since 2007’s Redacted. Now the cast has grown as Mediabiz (via The Playlist) reports that Dominic Cooper and Karoline Herfurth (The Reader) have signed up to star opposite the already cast Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace.

The film is a remake of Alan Corneau’s French thriller Love Crime, about a young woman who takes revenge on an older female executive who has taken advantage of the protagonist one too many times. In the original, which starred Ludivine Sagnier and Kristen Scott Thomas, the younger woman steals the older one’s ideas, which causes their rivalry to start burning, until it reaches the point of murder! However De Palma has swapped things round so it’s the older woman nicking things from the young hotshot.

There’s no news on exactly who Cooper and Herfurth will play, but shooting is expected to start soon.

Jason Statham Signs Up For William Goldman’s Heat Remake

February 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the European Film Market gearing up at the Berlin Film Festival, loads of new movies are being announced, in the hope they’ll pick up sales at the event. One of the latest to be revealed is a remake of the 1987 Burt Reynolds feature film Heat, with Jason Statham set to star and Brian De Palma directing the action film from a script adapted by two-time Oscar winner William Goldman (Witness, Butch Cassidy).

Goldman also wrote the original 1987 screenplay and the novel of the same name it’s based on. Both the modern take as well as the film from the 80’s are based on Goldman’s novel of the same title.

The action-thriller tells the story of a recovering gambling addict (Statham) who makes his living providing protection in the rough edges of the gambling world. Statham’s character refuses to resort to gunplay, strictly using hand and edged weapon combat. When a dear friend is brutally beaten by a high-rolling mobster, he helps her get her revenge and he ends up in more trouble than he ever imagined.

Heat will commence principal photography in France in late 2012 or early 2013.

Rachel McAdams Wants Passion

December 15, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Back last January, Brian De Palma (who’s been slightly missing in action for the last few years), attached himself to a movie called Passion, which is a remake of a French movie called Love Crime. Now Thompson On Hollywood reports Sherlock Holmes star Rachel McAdams is in talks to join Noomi Rapace in the movie, and that things have moved forward to the point it’s eyeing a March shoot in Berlin.

The film is about a young woman who takes revenge on an older female executive who has taken advantage of the protagonist one too many times. In the original, which starred Ludivine Sagnier and Kristen Scott Thomas, the younger woman steals the older one’s ideas, which causes their rivalry to start burning, until it reaches the point of murder! However De Palma has swappped things round so it’s the older woman nicking things from the young hotshot.

It’ll be the Scarface director’s first movie since Redacted in 2007, and takes him back to the realm of Hitchcockian thrillers he loves so much.
