Boulevard (Cinema Review)

July 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Robin Williams, Roberto Aguire, Kathy Baker, Bob Odernkirk
Director: Dito Montiel
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: R
Release Date: July 10th 2015 (US), April 8th 2016 (UK)

After Robin Williams’ untimely death, it looked for a while like we might not see his final movie beyond festival and other limited screenings. Despite starring the much-loved actor, distributors seemed to be shying away from it. However now the movie has arrived and you can see why in the immediate aftermath of Williams’ demise distributors might have had pause, as in it Robin plays a quiet and melancholic character in a movie that has an air of sadness running right through it.

However, Williams is extremely good in the movie as Nolan, a middle-aged, married man living a dull, grey life with little joy and little to keep him going into his fast encroaching later life. Then he literally bumps into Leo (Roberto Aguire), a young rent boy working on the streets. While Nolan doesn’t want sex, something about the man lights something inside him and he starts to seek out Leo’s company and attempts to help him. [Read more…]

Boulevard Trailer – Robin Williams plays a closeted gay man in his final movie

June 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boulevard-robin-williamsFor a while it looked like we migh never see Boulevard, as despite being Robin Williams’ final movie, no distributor seemed keen to pick it up. However now the film, which also stars Bob Odenkirk, Kathy Baker and Roberto Aguire, is due to open on July 10th in select cinemas in the US, and the trailer for the movie has arrived.

Williams will play Nolan Mack, who is a devoted husband but aware that he is actually gay and living a lie. Then, a run-in with a guarded young man forces Nolan to come to terms with his own secrets and begin to explore who he truly is.

Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) directs the movie, which had mixed reactions at festival screening, but should be worth a watch. [Read more…]

Robin Williams’ Last Performance As A Gay Man Having Difficulty Getting A Release

October 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boulevard-robin-williams-slideYou would have thought that after Robin Williams’ death it wouldn’t be too difficult to get his final films out to the public, but unfortunately it’s proving difficult with one of his movies, Boulevard, in which he plays a gay man.

The Daily Mirror reports that it’s proving an uphill battle to find a distributor who will put the movie on the big screen. A source is reported to have said: “It’s really sad but it is looking impossible that Boulevard will ever see the light of day now. It has proved to be a struggle for it to find the support it needs to be released. The cast have tried, as have the crew. But for many reasons it is looking very unlikely. There is one suggestion it isn’t up to scratch and is failing on merit to find anyone to distribute it.”

It’s particularly surprising as the film has received good notices at festival screenings when it’s been shown at the likes of Tribeca and Outfest. In the film Williams plays a man who has been married to a woman for years, but must confront the fact that secretly he knows that he’s really gay after he becomes infatuated with a young male prostitute.

It is possible the film is having difficulty finding a distributor due to the fact it’s quite serious and not always an easy watch, which combined with the tragedy surrounding the actor may be putting some companies off. However it’s also possible that while there are distributors who’d be willing to take the film on, they’re not willing or able to give the movie the kind of big push it would need to finding success in the crowded indie market.

The likelihood is the film will arrive at some point, although it may end up going straight-to-DVD.

The other three films Williams made before he died have already secured releases, with Night At The Museum 3 and A Merry Friggin’ Christmas due out in the US in the next couple of month, with his voice work as a dog in Absolutely Anything arriving next year.

Robin Williams & Roberto Aguire Up For Dito Montiel’s Boulevard

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robin-williamsIt looks like Robin Williams is going serious again as Variety reports that he is set to star alongside Roberto Aguire in Dito Montiel’s (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) planned new movie Boulevard.

The movie is described as an intimate drama about marriage and lies, Williams will play Nolan Mack, a devoted husband in a marriage of convenience until a run-in with a guarded young man forces Nolan to come to terms with his own secrets. Quite what those secrets are haven’t been revealed (the plot description does give off a potentially gay vibe, but it could easily be about something else). Roberto Aguire will play Leo, the young man.

Montiel will direct from a screenplay by Douglas Soesbe. It’s not clear when it might shoot.

Liam Hemsworth & Dwayne Johnson Circling Empire State

January 6, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Who’s gonna end up the biggest of the Hemsworth brothers? Chris overtook Liam’s early lead thanks to Thor, but the younger brother is hitting back this year with the likes of the Hunger Games and The Expendables 2 (while Chris will be saving the world in The Avengers). Now Liam’s got another project he’s hoping will push him up the fame ladder – Empire State.

Deadline reports that Liam Hemsworth is finalising a deal to star in the movie for director Dito Montiel, with Dwayne Johnson in talks for another role as well. Adam Mazer (Breach) wrote the screenplay, based on the true story of a 1982 armored car company robbery in New York City. At the time the heist was believed to be the largest in US history.

Liam Hemsworth will play Chris, and Dwayne Johnson is portraying Ransone, although no further details have been given about their characters. Production is scheduled to begin in April.
