New The Circle Trailer – Emma Watson & Tom Hanks explore the dangers of modern technology

February 9, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Based on a Dave Eggers novel, The Circle is a film that’s vaguely science-fiction, but actually far closer to reality than we might like to admit. After all, Google and Facebook already know more about us than even our closest friends.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Circle is a gripping modern thriller, set in the not-too-distant future, starring Emma Watson (“Harry Potter”), Tom Hanks (“Sully”) and John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”). When Mae (Emma Watson) is hired to work for the world’s largest and most powerful tech & social media company, she sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime.  As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company’s founder, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom.  Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes begin to affect the lives and future of her friends, family and that of humanity.’

The likes of John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, Bill Paxton and Glenne Headly also star. Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in US cinemas in April, but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

The Circle Trailer – Emma Watson and Tom Hanks take on a techno-thriller

December 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-circles-slide-2017Based on a Dave Eggers novel, The Circle is a film that’s vaguely science-fiction, but actually far closer to reality than we might like to admit. After all, Google and Facebook already know more about us than even our closest friends.

Watson plays a young woman who’s hired for a big job in an Internet company called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. It’s there that she meets a mysterious older man, Bailey, who has created the Circle.

Director James Ponsoldt comments to USA Today, “Bailey’s notion is that knowing is good, and knowing everything is better. He believes all experiences should be available to everyone, not only the privileged or people who can afford to them. He’s deeply interested in technology that can make people share all human experiences with everyone. He’s a boundary pusher, even boundary destroyer.”

The likes of John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, Bill Paxton and Glenne Headly also star. Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in cinemas next year. [Read more…]

emma watsonEmma Watson is busy being Belle in Disney’s live-action version of Beauty And The Beast, but she’s already lining up new projects, with TheWrap reporting that following Alicia Vikander’s departure from James Ponsoldt’s The Circle, Emma Watson has stepped in.

Tom Hanks is also attached to the techno thriller based on Dave Eggers’ novel, with Watson as ‘a young woman who’s hired for a big job in an Internet monopoly called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. It’s there that she meets a mysterious older man, who will be played by two-time Oscar winner Hanks.’

“Emma Watson is one of my favorite actors, and her incredible talent, sensitivity, and deep intelligence will bring an electric energy to ‘The Circle,’” said Ponsoldt.

The End of the Tour Trailer – Jason Segel takes on novelist David Foster Wallace

May 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

END-OF-THE-TOUR-pic1Will it be Almost Famous all over again, but time with literature instead of music? Probably not, but they do have similar premises, with a Rolling Stone journalist heading off on the road to interview someone and write a piece.

Here’s the synopsis (form Sundance): ‘THE END OF THE TOUR tells the story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter (and novelist) David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace’s groundbreaking epic novel, Infinite Jest. As the days go on, a tenuous yet intense relationship seems to develop between journalist and subject. The two men bob and weave around each other, sharing laughs and also possibly revealing hidden frailties – but it’s never clear how truthful they are being with each other.

‘Ironically, the interview was never published, and five days of audio tapes were packed away in Lipsky’s closet. The two men did not meet again. The film is based on Lipsky’s critically acclaimed memoir about this unforgettable encounter, written following Wallace’s 2008 suicide. Both Segel and Eisenberg reveal great depths of emotion in their performances and the film is directed with humor and tenderness by Sundance vet James Ponsoldt from Pulitzer- Prize winner Donald Margulies’ insightful and heartbreaking screenplay.’

The film’s out in the US in July. [Read more…]

Jason Segel & Jesse Eisenberg Head For The End of the Tour

December 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jason-SegelJason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg are on a collision course, as they have both signed up to star in James Ponsoldt’s upcoming true story adaptation The End of the Tour, according to TheWrap. They should certainly make an interesting if a little geeky pairing.

The film is based on David Lipsky’s verbosely titled, Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip with David Foster Wallace. It tells the story of a five-day road trip that took place at the tail end of novelist David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest tour. The author committed suicide on September 12, 2008, however many consider Infinity Jest to be one of the best books of the last 50 year.

Jason Segel will portray the late Wallace with Jesse Eisenberg taking on the role of the Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky. James Ponsoldt is directing from a script by Donald Margulies. Filming should begin early next year.

The Spectacular Now Trailer – Miles Teller & Shailene Woodley fall in love

June 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Ponsoldt’s film The Spectacular Now has been getting pretty good reviews after festival screenings, and now we get our first look with a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Sutter Keely (Miles Teller) lives in the now. It’s a good place for him. A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he’s the life of the party, loves his job at a men’s clothing store, and has no plans for the future. A budding alcoholic, he’s never far from his supersized, whisky-fortified thirst-master cup. But after being dumped by his girlfriend, Sutter gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky (Shailene Woodley) hovering over him. She’s different: the “nice girl” who reads science fiction and doesn’t have a boyfriend. While Amy has dreams of a future, Sutter lives in the impressive delusion of a spectacular now, yet somehow, they’re drawn together.’

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Bob Odenkirk, Kyle Chandler, and Brie Larson also star. [Read more…]

James Ponsoldt Plans Young Hillary Clinton Biopic

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hillary-clintonWith many expecting Hillary Clinton to make another bid for the White House in 2018, a biopic of her early days seems like a pretty good idea. South Korean writer Young Il Kim has written one, which was ranked fourth on the 2012 Black List  of the best unproduced screenplays.

Now The Wrap reports that James Ponsoldt, the director behind Smashed and The Spectacular Now, has signed up to direct the movie, which is currently called, Rodham. Set during the time of the Watergate scandal, the story follows Hillary when she is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon. She has to choose between a career at the White House and her unresolved feelings for former boyfriend Bill Clinton, who is teaching law in Arkansas at the time of the movie.

The Twilight Saga producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey are backing the film, and plan to attach an actress to play Hillary before shopping the project to studios. While many top actresses have expressed interest in the role, the movie is still in the early stages of development and nobody has been cast.

Smashed Trailer – Can Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Aaron Paul go sober?

September 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Aaron Paul star in Smashed as a married couple whose bond is built on a mutual love of alcohol gets their relationship put to the test when the wife decides to get sober and he attempts to follow suit. It’s a plot that many will be able to relate to, especially those who’ve found that when they stopped smoking wacky baccy with their partner, they don’t seem as delightful anymore. The movie played Sundance in January, but it’s only now we get the trailer. No UK date is currently set for the film, but it hits US cinemas in October.
