The Darkest Hour (Cinema Review) – A Golden Globe winning Gary Oldman takes on Churchill

January 10, 2018 By Mike Martin Leave a Comment

Starring: Gary Oldman, Kristen Scott Thomas, Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn
Director: Joe Wright
Running Time: 125 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: January 12th 2018 (UK)

If you need an actor to play Winston Churchill look no further than Harry Potter. The great Gary Oldman is the fifth man to play the wartime PM relatively recently after Timothy Spall, Robert Hardy, Michael Gambon and Brendan Gleeson, and he certainly has the gravitas to carry it off. That’s evidenced by his recent Golden Globe win and BAFTA nomination (the film also scored another eight nominations). Despite that, what he doesn’t have is a script that helps him out much, or a director who brings the story to life. A shame, as it could have been so much more, set during a pivotal month in WWII.

This is apparently the passion project of writer Anthony McCarten, but quite what he is trying to tease out of the well-worn story remains something of a mystery. He also plays fast and loose with history – the idea that Churchill was befriended by his best mate the King seems a stretch, as does the idea that most of Parliament wanted to do a deal with Hitler – some did certainly, but not the majority. Another idea, that a doubting Churchill was buoyed by taking a tube train and is roused by the voices of the people, is frankly ludicrous. Some truly dodgy acting by extras doesn’t help. Darkest Hour Trailer – Gary Oldman plays Winston Churchill on the eve of WWII

July 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When you first look at Gary Oldman, you wouldn’t think he’d be the first choice to play British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill. However, as the pic above and trailer below show that after an impressive transformation, he’s far better than you’d think.

Here’s the synopsis for the Darkest Hour, ‘A thrilling and inspiring true story begins on the eve of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.’

Kristen Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup and Ben Mendelsohn also star, with Joe Wright directing. It’s due in UK cinemas next January. [Read more…]

Pan Trailer – Hugh Jackman & Garrett Hedlund are going to Neverland

July 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pan-main-poster-slideEarlier promos for Warner’s upcoming Peter Pan prequel have been rather underwhelming, largely because the whole thing looked like a rather shoddy cartoon. However it looks like they’ve been using the fact the release was delayed from Summer to October 2015 to work on the special effects and make the whole thing look a little less plastic.

This new trailer certainly looks a lot better and suggests this might actually be a decent movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Warner Bros. Pictures comes, “Pan,” a live-action Peter Pan feature directed by Joe Wright (“Atonement,” “Pride & Prejudice”).

‘Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the action adventure follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny—to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

‘The film stars Oscar® nominee Hugh Jackman (“Les Misérables”) as Blackbeard; Garrett Hedlund (“Inside Llewyn Davis”) as Hook; Oscar® nominee Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) as Tiger Lily; Adeel Akhtar (“The Dictator”) as Smee; and newcomer Levi Miller as Peter.

‘Amanda Seyfried (“Les Misérables”) rounds out the cast as Mary, alongside Jack Charles (“Mystery Road”) as The Chief/Tiger Lily’s father; Taejoo Na (“The Kick”) as Kwahu; Nonso Anozie (“Son of God,” “Atonement”) as Bishop; Kathy Burke (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) as Mother Barnabas; Kurt Egyiawan (“Skyfall”) as Murray; Lewis MacDougall (UK TV’s “In the Name of the Children”) as Nibs; and newcomer Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling.’ [Read more…]

New Pan Trailer – Hugh Jackman & Garrett Hedlund head for Neverland

May 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pan-poster3When the first Pan trailer arrived last November it was the start of a campaign that was supposed to see the movie arrive in cinemas this July. However Warner decided that as it had a pretty packed summer it would move it back to October, and so this new trailer is essentially trying to start up the hype all over again.

The promo suggests this will be a more traditional family fantasy than some of the darker takes on classic tales we’ve had recently, although I’m hoping that by the time it reaches cinemas the CGI won’t look quite Polar Express animation.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Hugh Jackman Gets His Blackbeard On In The First Pics From Pan

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pan-preview-pic2-slideOver the next few weeks we should be seeing the first shoots of hype for some of what Hollywood is hoping will be the big films of 2015. We already know that a Jurassic World trailer arrived on Friday, while as Star Wars Episode VII will debut the same day in select cinemas.

However one film that might need a bit more of a push than most – simply because it’s not a sequel or spin-off -is Pan, director Joe Wright‘s Peter Pan origin story.

When Hugh Jackman was spotted with a shaved head earlier this year, many assumed that was because his Blackbeard (it’s an origin so Hook isn’t the big baddie in this one) would be bald. However as these first pics show, which arrive via EW, it’s because he’s got a bit of a weird wig.

The images also show young Levi Miller as Peter, who is kidnapped by Blackbeard’s pirates and taken off to Neverland. Hook will appear in the film – in the form of Gerrett Hedlund – but he’s just a member of the crew and befriends Pan, although presumably by the end of the movie we’ll see exactly how they became mortal enemies.

The film’s out July 2015. [Read more…]

Rooney Mara Signs Up To Play Tiger Lily In Pan

March 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rooney-maraWarner Bros. is moving fast to get Pan into production, hoping to steal a march on a rival Peter Pan prequel that’s in the works at Disney. The film has Joe Wright set to direct, Hugh Jackman up to play the villainous Blackbeard, and Garrett Hedlund as Hook, who starts off as a good guy before turning bad.

Now the first female name has signed on, with Variety reporting that Rooney Mara is set to play Tiger Lily in the movie. Many actresses were considered for the movie, such as Lupita Nyonog’o and Adele Exarchopoulos, before Mara was offered the part.

The original story ‘is set during World War II and follows an orphan named Peter who is kidnapped by pirates and brought to Neverland, where he discovers he’s destined to save the land from the pirate Blackbeard.’ It’s said to be very different to any Pan movie put on the screen before, with a multi-racial/international look.

The hope is that it can become a franchise on a par with Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings. We’ll be able to see if it can manage that when it’s released July 17, 2015.

The search is now on to find a young person to play Peter, which will include an open casting call.

Garrett Hedlund Might Be Captain Hook in Pan

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Garrett Hedlund in Tron Legacy

Garrett Hedlund

With Warner Bros. recently slotting Pan into the July 15th 2015 release date vacated by Batman Vs. Superman, the race is on to get Joe Wright’s film into production. In December Hugh Jackman entered negotiations to play Blackbeard. Now he may have some company, as THR reports that Garrett Hedlund has been offered the lead role of Captain Hook.

The actor beat out the likes of Jack Huston and Ezra Miller for the coveted role.

The movie, which is a prequel written by Jason Fuchs, follows young orphan Peter Pan, who is taken to Neverland and ends up leading the locals in a rebellion against the pirates. Captain Hook starts out as an ally to Peter Pan before turning villainous.

It’s not certain when it will start shooting, although it will have to be fairly soon.

Hugh Jackman May Be Blackbeard In Joe Wright’s Pan

December 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

les-miserables-hugh-jackmanHugh Jackman may be turning pirate as Variety reports that after Javier Bardem passed on the role, Hugh is in talks to play Blackbeard in Pan. Joe Wright is directing the Peter Pan prequel, which is in a bit of a race to the screen against Disney’s Peter and the Starcatchers, based on the ‘official’ Pan prequel novel.

Previously there haven’t been many plot details for Pan, but Variety opens up a little, saying ‘The origin story revolves around an orphan who is taken to the magical world of Neverland where he becomes a hero to the natives and leads a revolt against the evil pirates.

‘The idea is that Blackbeard is the film’s main antagonist while Hook would serve as Pan’s close ally before turning bad. Ryan Gosling was someone the studio had looked at among others for the part.’

The studio is now likely to hold an open casting for the role of Peter, and is also looking for an actress in her 20s to play Tiger Lily. It’s not clear when it might shoot.

Javier Bardem May Head To Neverland As The Villain In Pan

November 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

javier-bardemWith several Peter Pan based prequels in the works at various studios, it seems Warner Bros. is trying to move fast on its film, Pan, in order to get to cinemas first. Just a few days ago, Hanna director Joe Wright signed onto helm Pan. That’s now followed by the news that Javier Bardem is in talks to play the lead villain, according to Deadline.

The movie will be an origin story for Peter Pan, based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale. Flipper remake writer Jason Fuchs is currently drafting the screenplay.

Javier Bardem will not play the iconic Captain Hook, but instead will personify Blackbeard. The story revolves around orphan boy Peter, who is taken for the first time to the magical world of Neverland, where he joins the natives, leading them in a rebellion against a group of evil pirates.

There’s no news on when it might shoot.
