Sing Street (Blu-ray Review)

August 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Kelly Thornton, Jack Reynor, Aiden Gillen, Maria Doyle Kennedy
Director: John Carney
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 8th 2016 (UK)

John Carney had great success with the Oscar-winning Once, but his follow-up, Begin Again, wasn’t so well received. However, he’s back on top with Sing Street, a great, Irish coming-of-age flick, which like his earlier movies is infused throughout with music.

Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) is surprised when he’s pulled out of his private school and sent to a local Catholic school, which he soon discovers is more like a containment zone for out of control kids than an educational establishment, not helped by the fact it’s run by an overgrown bully. After the culture shock settles, Conor decides to do what many before him have done to attempt to impress a girl he’s met – start a band. [Read more…]

March 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Previously titled Can a Song Save Your Life?, Begin Again has now released its first trailer, so we can get a feel for this music infused upcoming movie, which stars Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Adam Levine, Hailee Steinfeld, Catherine Keener, CeeLo Green and James Corden.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Written and directed by John Carney, Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who come to New York when he lands a deal with a major label.

‘His new-found fame soon tempts Dave to stray, leaving a reeling, lovelorn Gretta on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performance in the East Village and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. Cee Lo Green On For Can A Song Save Your Life?

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cee Lo Green is going to the movies, as it’s been announced that he’s joined the cast of Can A Song Save Your Life?, from Once director John Carney. He joins a cast that also includes Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld, Adam Levine and Catherine Keener.

In the film, seduced by dreams of making it in the big city, Gretta (Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend (Levine) move to New York to pursue their passion for music. She’s heartbroken when he dumps her for the fame and fortune of a big solo contract, leaving her all on her own. Left to sleep on the couch of an old friend, Gretta reluctantly agrees to play an open mic night before departing the city for home. Her world takes a turn for the better when a down-on-his-luck record producer (Ruffalo) stumbles upon her singing and is immediately captivated by her raw talent and inspiring authenticity – they may be each other’s last chance to turn their lives around.

Recruiting street musicians, amateurs, and professionals borrowed from the posse of Troublegum (Green), a hip-hop artist he discovered years ago, Dan throws himself into producing for Gretta. Fueled by his enthusiasm, Gretta begins to develop confidence as a performer and songwriter. Dan hopes that his new direction will repair his marriage with his estranged wife Miriam (Keener) and reclaim the respect of his daughter Violet (Steinfeld). Somewhere between friendship and their love of music, the two strangers strike a chord that captures the hearts of everyone around them, proving that every great story has its own soundtrack.

Production starts on July 2nd in New York City

James Corden Up For Can A Song Save Your Life & One Chance

June 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Corden has popped up in the likes of The History Boys, Starter For 10, Lesbian Vampire Killers and The Three Musketeers, but he hasn’t made a huge impact on film as yet. However following his Tony win last week, Corden’s US profile is on the rise, and he’s now booked two movie roles, according to Deadline.

Corden is up for the new film from Once director John Carney, Can A Song Save Your Life, which already has Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld and Adam Levine onbaord. Corden will play the best friend of Knightley’s character, who plays a singer who moves with her boyfriend to New York to pursue music careers, but she gets dumped as soon as he makes it.

He’s also set to star as Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts in the long-gestating, One Chance. Potts is the British cell phone salesman who showed up onstage to sing opera on BGT in 2007. Although he didn’t really look the part, he left the audience with their jaws on the floor. David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) is directing that film.

Hailee Steinfeld Asks Can a Song Save Your Life?

February 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hailee Steinfeld made a big impact and scored an Oscar nomination for True Grit, but as so often happens when an actor comes out of nowhere, it takes a while until we see them in a follow-up role. She’s currently shooting Romeo & Juliet and she’s also booked in Ender’s Game, and now THR reports she’s joined the cast of the musical Can a Song Save Your Life? So it certainly seems we’ll see plenty of her in future.

The movie is about Gretta (Scarlett Johansson), a talented young singer who moves to New York City with her boyfriend, only to have him dump her when he gets a solo recording contract. Gretta crosses paths with a depressed record producer (Mark Ruffalo) and they strike up a relationship which could save each others careers. Steinfeld will play Ruffalo’s daughter.

John Carney, who scored a major success with the Irish musical feature Once, is directing Can a Song Save Your Life? from his own original screenplay. Production is scheduled to start in June.

Mark Ruffalo & Scarlett Johansson Ask Can a Song Save Your Life?

February 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mark Ruffalo must have enjoyed working with Scarlett Johansson on The Avengers as they’re set to team up again for Can a Song Save Your Life?, which is a return to the music-film arena for Once director John Carney.

Variety says that in the film, Gretta (Johansson) is seduced by dreams of making it in the big city, and so she and her long-time boyfriend move to New York to pursue their passion for music. Soon after she’s heartbroken when he dumps her for the fame and fortune of a big solo contract.

However, her world takes a turn for the better when a down-on-his-luck record producer (Ruffalo) stumbles upon her singing in a local bar and is immediately captivated by her raw talent and inspiring authenticity.

It’s a chance for Johansson to show off her singing skills, but gets a bit more cred with the presence of Mark Ruffalo. The plan is to begin shooting in June.

John Carney Takes On Steve Carell’s Dogs Of Babel

November 3, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Back in 2006, director John Carney made a bit of a splash with the musical Once, which won the Audience Award at Sundance amongst many other gongs (including an Oscar for one of the songs). However he’s been fairly quiet since, probably because rather than going Hollywood, he’s continued to make small Irish movies.

However that may change as the LA Times reports he’s in final talk to direct Dogs of Babel, which has Steve Carell onboard as producer and star. Jamie Linden wrote the screenplay, which is adapted from Carolyn Parkhurst’s novel of the same name. It centres on Paul Iverson (Carell), a linguistics professor who returns home and finds his wife dead in their back yard.

Although the police rule the death an accident, Paul is still skeptical. He tries to teach his dog Lorelei, the only witness to his wife’s death, how to speak, in hopes of determining what really happened that day. Hmm, let’s hope it’s better than it sounds, but thankfully Carney is the sort of guy who could pull this off. It isn’t known when production may begin on Dogs of Babel.
