February 29, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent, Domhnall Gleeson, Julie Walters
Director: John Crowley
Running Time: 111 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: February 19th 2015 (UK)

If you want Oscar nominations, you need to put Domhnall Gleeson in your movie. He was in four films released in 2015 that got multiple nominations. Brooklyn was one of those movies (alongside Star Wars, The Revenant and Ex Machina), although he doesn’t show up until the second half.

Based on Colm Toibin’s book, Brooklyn is about young Irish woman Eilis (Saoirse Ronan), whose sister Rose and a priest have organised for her to have a new life in New York, where they believe she will have more opportunities. After a difficult crossing, Eilis starts a new job at a department store while living at a boarding house in Brooklyn, and begins training to be a bookkeeper. [Read more…]

Closed Circuit Trailer – Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall go into thriller mode

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall are being watched! At least they are in Closed Circuit, who find their lives getting very difficult after they join the team of defence lawyers for an international terrorist’s trial.

To add a bit of complication, Bana and Hall used to be a couple, which is a fact that could be used by the powerful players who appear to want to use them as pawns in the intrigue.

Julia Stiles, Jim Broadbent, Ciaran Hinds, Roz Ahmed, Kenneth Cranham and Game Of Thrones’ Isaac Hempstead Wright also star. It hits the US on August 28th and comes to the UK on November 1st. [Read more…]

Cate Blanchett & Mia Wasikowska On For Lesbian Themed Carol

May 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cate Blanchett must like novelist Patricia Highsmith, as she’s already starred in an adaptation of the author’s The Talented Mr. Ripley and now she’s taking on another of her books, as she and Mia Wasikowska are set to star in a new take Highsmith’s novel Carol (aka The Price of Salt).

Directed by BAFTA winning John Crowley (Intermission, Boy A), with Lesbian playwright Phyllis Nagy (Mrs Harris) on scripting duties, Carol is a love story about pursuit, betrayal and passion that follows the burgeoning relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York. One, a girl in her 20s working in a department store who dreams of a more fulfilling life, and the other, a wife trapped in a loveless, moneyed marriage desperate to break free but fearful of losing her daughter in the process. When the book was published in 1952 it was one of the first to show lesbian relationships as more than just short-term flings, and something that can engender deep feelings.

The film is currently looking for international sales at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with filming set to start in February 2013 in London and New York.

Producer Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley commented, “We are thrilled to be working with Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska, two of the most talented actors working today, in this striking adaptation of one of the 20th century’s most iconic writers, Patricia Highsmith. To be re-united with highly talented individuals, director John Crowley and writer Phylis Nagy is a testament to the quality of the project. We are delighted to have such a gifted team on board.”

Eric Bana & Rebecca Hall Sign Up For A Suspense Thriller

February 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s always surprising how many films head for production without a title – or at least they probably had a title at one point, but not one everyone can agree on, and so they put the decision off until a later date. One such nameless flick in John Crowley’s planned suspense thriller.

THR reports that the movie’s now signed Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall to star in the film, which starts shooting in April. They’ll play ex-lovers who must work together on the defense team during a terrorist trial.

Crowley is best known for directing Boy A (the movie that launched Andrew Garfield’s career), and is directing this new project based on a script by Oscar nominee Steven Knight (Eastern Promises).
