The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Trailer – Lily James heads to the Channel Islands just after WWII

February 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s perhaps not surprising that in the US, the movie version of Annie Barrows’ popular novel, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, is going by the simpler title, Guernsey. However, in the UK we’re get the more verbose name for the Channel Island set film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Lily James plays free-spirited journalist Juliet Ashton, who forms a life-changing bond with the delightful and eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, when she decides to write about the book club they formed during the occupation of Guernsey in WWII.

‘Directed by Mike Newell, the film also stars Glen Powell (Everybody Wants Some, Hidden Figures), Matthew Goode (The Imitation Game, Downton Abbey), Jessica Brown Findlay (Victor Frankenstein, Downton Abbey) and Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, The Boat That Rocked) with Tom Courtenay (45 Years, Doctor Zhivago) and Penelope Wilton (The BFG, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel).’

The movie is due in UK cinemas on April 20th. Take a look at the trailer for the movie below. [Read more…]

Mike Newell Plans To Direct Day Of The Triffids Movie

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mike-newellFor several years there’s been talk of making a big screen Triffids movie, with the likes of Sam Raimi attached to direct. However we haven’t had much news for a while, but it seems the idea has been resurrected, as Deadline reports that Mike Newell (Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire) is hoping to direct.

Raimi is still involved as a producer, alongside Don Murphy, Mark Gordon and Susan Montford.

John Wyndhams original tale, The Day Of The Triffids, revolves around a meteor shower which results in 99.9% of the world population going blind. The meteors also release aggressive plants dubbed Triffids, who begin to attack the blind masses, with a few non-blind survivors trying to fend off the devastating attack.

Neil Cross (Luther) has written the screenplay, although it’s not certain when it might shoot.

Great Expectations (2012) (DVD)

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jeremy Irvine, Holliday Grainger, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Flemyng
Director: Mike Newell
Running Time: 124 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 25th 2013

The BBC must like Great Expectations an awful lot, as within 12 months they produced a TV version starring Douglas Booth, Gillian Anderson and Ray Winstone, and backed this movie version from director Mike Newell (Prince Of Persia). They should probably have stuck with the very well received former, as while handsomely mounted and well-acted, Newell’s movie is a little flat. [Read more…]

Christoph Waltz Will Be Mikhail Gorbachev Opposite Michael Douglas In Reykjavik

October 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, Michael Douglas signed up to play Ronald Reagan in the film Reykjavik, with Mike Newell directing. The movie will cover the 1986 summit between the American and Russian leaders in Iceland, which marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

Now we know who’ll play Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, as THR reports that Christoph Waltz has taken the job. He’ll be going bald and getting a port wine stain on his forehead when cameras start rolling early next year. The film could certainly be interesting, as before the summit, fear of nuclear war had been rising and the talks collapsed at least once, but by the end an accord had been struck that helped change the world.

Mike Newell commented, “I feel very fortunate to have two such masters to portray the men who brought about the end of the third great war of the 20th Century. Reagan and Gorbachev were two of the most significant politicians and individuals of their times. I’m very excited to see how each of these great actors gets to grips with their role as the history-changing giants we remember them to have been.”

Michael Douglas To Play Reagan In Reykjavik

August 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Douglas is in negotiations to portray US President Ronald Reagan in Reykjavik, according to THR. When the project was first announced last May, Ridley Scott was set to direct, although as with most movies he attaches himself to, he’ll no longer helm but will instead produce.

Now Mike Newell (Harry Potter 4, Great Expectation) is in talks to direct the film, which is a dramatisation of the 1986 summit between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Russian leader Mikael Gorbachev, to discuss a peace agreement in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. As the movie’s title suggests, the talks were was held in Reykjavik, Iceland. The search is still on for an actor to play the Soviet premier.

The $10 million movie should start shooting next March in Germany.

Great Expectations To Close London Film Festival

August 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few days ago it was announced that Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie is set to open 56th BFI London Film Festival on October 10th, and now it’s been revealed that the closing movie will be the European Premiere of Mike Newell’s take on Great Expectations.

In the film, young orphan Pip is given a chance to rise from his humble beginnings thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Moving through London’s class-ridden world as a gentleman, Pip uses his new-found position to pursue the beautiful Estella, a spoilt heiress he’s loved since childhood. Yet the shocking truth behind this great fortune will have devastating consequences for everything he holds dear.

The movie stars Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jeremy Irvine, Holliday Grainger, Robbie Coltrane, Ewen Bremner, Jason Flemyng, Sally Hawkins, David Walliams and Tamzin Outhwaite. It was adapted for the screen by David Nicholls, writer of the global best-seller One Day. The film will be released nationwide on 30th November 2012 in the UK.

Director Mike Newell comments: “It’s a great honour to be invited to be the BFI London Film Festival’s Closing Night film. I’m proud that our new version of Great Expectations should be presented this year, the bi-centenary of Dickens’ birth. I’ve tried to make a film that is true to the theatrical vividness, energetic characters and high colour that he is loved for, while mining the deep seams of emotional cruelty and madness that underlie one of Dickens’ darkest-shadowed stories. I’ve tried to make a film for a young modern audience in which Pip and Estella’s fated love affair is shown through feelings and stresses that are of today and in a city that was, then, full of brawling energy, was unimaginably wealthy and very bad.”

Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Mike Newell are expected to attend the Festival. The 56th BFI London Film Festival runs from Wednesday 10th October-Sunday 21st October.

Four Weddings And A Funeral (Blu-ray)

February 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Andie MacDowell, Hugh Grant, James Fleet, Kristin Scott Thomas, Simon Callow
Director: Mike Newell
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: 2012, February 6th

“Is it still raining? I hadn’t noticed.”

It may be the most vomit-inducing line in modern cinema, to the point that it’s rather overshadowed people’s opinions of the movie. The fact is that beyond that moment, Four Weddings & A Funeral is a rather wry, witty, sweet and somewhat subversive romantic comedy. Indeed it’s the fact that it doesn’t take the usual route of generic rom-coms that turned it into a huge hit, which on its release became one of the biggest movies ever at the UK box office.

If you haven’t seen it, the title is very literal, as the film takes place over the course of four weddings and a funeral, as we chart the course of the relationship between Charles (Grant) and Carrie (MacDowell), who meet at the first wedding  and take a rather unusual romantic course through the other ceremonies. First Pic Of Bonham Carter In Great Expectations

November 7, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The role of Miss Havisham in Great Expectations is great on the page, but something that’s a little difficult to pull off on the screen. However if anyone can do it right it’s Helena Bonham, and now the first images of her in Mike Newell’s take on Dickens classic have arrived, via Deadline.

She looks as batty and gothic as you’d hope. In case you’re no up on your Dickens, Miss Havisham is a kooky woman whose life basically ended the day her fiance left her at the altar. Ever since then she’s been trapped in that moment, getting ever more bitter and raising the beautiful Estella to be as cold and loathing of love as she is.

The movie is due out next autumn, to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Dickens’ birth.
