James Badge Dale Is Getting Spectral In A New Supernatural Thriller

February 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James-Badge-DaleJames Badge Dale may not be a household name but he’s certainly in demand. Just in 2013 he popped up in Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger, World War Z and Parkland. However they were all supporting roles, but now he may be stepping into the central part, as TheWrap reports that he is in talks to star in the supernatural thriller Spectral.

The movie is about a covert special-ops unit that is tasked with battling supernatural beings which have taken over New York City. The film ha  described as a supernatural Black Hawk Down.

Ian Fried penned the original treatment, with the script written by George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), with John Gatins providing a rewrite. Nic Mathieu is directing, with Legendary Pictures backing the movie.

Nic Mathieu To Helm Giant Robots Movie Robotech

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nic-mathieuWarner Bros. seems to think there’s a lot of money in giant robots, as they’ve already got Pacific Rim hitting cinemas this summer, and now they’re moving forward with another mecha movies they’ve had percolating for several years, Robotech.

THR reports that the studio has selected commercials helmer Nic Mathieu to direct the movie version of the Japanese cartoon series. Mathieu has no feature credits, although he’s well known in the ad industry for inventive CG-fuelled commercials, so he could well be a good choice.

Robotech is, ‘A sprawling sci-fi epic, which takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.’

The likelihood is that Warner will wait to see how Pacific Rim does before deciding on whether to make Robotech, although having a director attached should mean they can move forward fairly quickly if they do decide to make the film.

Shawn Levy Producing Sci-fi Flick The Story Of Your Life

November 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It sometimes feels that Night At The Museum and Real Steel director Shawn Levy is on a mission to produce all movies, as he has a ridiculous number in the works that have his name attached to them. Now a new one has surfaced via ComingSoon, as he’s set to produce the sci-fi flick, The Story Of Your Life, with commercials director Nic Mathieu planning to make his feature directorial debut on the film.

Eric Heisserer (The Thing, A Nightmare On Elm Street) is writing the screenplay, based on Nebula Award-winning short story by Ted Chiang. After aliens land around the globe, a linguist is recruited by the US government in a race to decipher their intentions on Earth. However learning their language teaches her how to think like them, which results in her being able to perceive time ‘chrono-synclastically’, which essentially means she can remember the future.

Unsurprisingly this causes more than a few issues, not least that she now has the ability to see what will happen to her currently unborn daughter.

Casting is apparently now underway, with shooting set to start in the first half of next year.
