The Meyerowitz Stories Trailer – Adam Sandler teams with Noah Baumbach for a critically praised movie

August 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The words ‘Adam Sandler’ and ‘critical praise’ are rarely written in the same sentence, but it’s true of The Meyerowitz Stories, which debuted in competition at Cannes and got a lot of positive notices. While the presence of director Noah Baumbach probably helps, Sandler is apparently really good.

He’s also got some great actors in support including Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. And all this for a movie that will be largely bypassing cinemas and going straight onto Netflix.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From writer/director Noah Baumbach, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is the emotional and comic intergenerational tale of adult siblings (Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Elizabeth Marvel) contending with the long shadow their strong-willed father (Dustin Hoffman) has cast over their lives.  With an original screenplay by Baumbach, the film also stars Emma Thompson, Grace Van Patten, Adam Driver, Candice Bergen, Judd Hirsch, and Rebecca Miller. The film was produced by Scott Rudin, Baumbach, Lila Yacoub, and Eli Bush.

‘An Official Selection of Cannes Film Festival 2017, the film will make its North American premiere at this year’s New York Film Festival. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) will be released on Netflix and in select cinemas on October 13th.’

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

While We’re Young Trailer – Ben Stiller & Naomi Watts try to keep their youth

December 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While-Were-Young-pic1Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha, Squid And The Whale) is back with While We’re Young, which reteamed him with his Greenberg star Ben Stiller, alongside Naomi Watts, Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried, for a look at a 40-something couple trying to keep hold of their youth.

Stiller and Watts are the couple, plodding along in early middle-aged life when they meets Driver and Seyfried’s hipster young couple. Their ennui – Stiller’s character has spent 10 years editing a single documentary – is upended and they suddenly feel energised, but of course recapturing your youth isn’t that simple.

A March 27th, 2015 US release is set and it’ll be out in the UK a week later. [Read more…]

Noah Baumbach Takes On Flawed Dogs For Dreamworks Animation

September 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

noah-baumbachNoah Baumbach made his name as a director with the indie likes of The Squid And The Whale, Margot At The Wedding, Greenberg and the recent Frances Ha. However now he’s planning something a little different, as Bleeding Cool reports that Baumbach has been secretly working on an adaptation of cartoonist and author Berkley Breathed’s Flawed Dogs book, The Shocking Raid on Westminster for DreamWorks Animation.

While it’s loosely based on that specific novel, the title will simply be Flawed Dogs. It won’t be a straightforward adaptation though, as Baumbach is apparently working in a few twists.

Here’s a description of the book: ‘Sam the Lion is actually a priceless dachshund, bred to be a show dog. More important, he is Heidy’s best friend—and she needs one like never before. Living with her reclusive uncle is hard, but Sam has a way of making her feel soft and whole. Until the day Sam is framed by the jealous poodle Cassius, and is cast out by Heidy’s uncle, alone on the wild streets, where he is roughed up by a world he was not bred for. Sporting a soup ladle for a leg, Sam befriends other abandoned dogs and journeys all the way to the Westminster Dog Show, where his plan for revenge on Cassius takes an unexpected turn when he and Heidy spot each other after years of being apart.’

Baumbach actually has some animation experience, as while he’s mainly directed in the indie realm, he co-wrote both Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and Fantastic Mr. Fox. There’s no news on when Flawed Dogs might arrive in cinemas.

Amanda Seyfried & Adam Driver Up To Join Ben Stiller In While We’re Young

May 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amanda-seyfriedIt’s been a long time since we heard about this movie. Indeed the last time news emerged it didn’t have a name, but it was revealed that it would reunite Ben Stiller and Greenberg writer/director Noah Baumbach. At the time James Franco was also involved, and offers had been made to Greta Gerwig and Cate Blachett.

Fast forward a couple of years and Stiller is still attached but the other actors have gone. Instead TheWrap reports that Amanda Seyfried is in talks to join the film, with Adam Driver and Naomi Watts taking the other main roles. Oh, and it’s got a name, While We’re Young.

The film is about about a free-spirited Brooklynite twenty-something couple (Seyfried and Driver) who inspires an uptight documentarian (Stiller) and his wife (Watts) to loosen up – with comedic consequences. There’s no news on exactly when it might shoot.

Frances Ha Trailer – Greta Gerwig reteams with Noah Baumbach

March 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Greta Gerwig is keeping to her indie roots, reteaming with her Greenberg director Noah Baumbach for what looks like an unusual, quirky, black & white comedy drama. It’s difficult to tell exactly what the film is about from the trailer, but it does look like it could be an interesting one (and Baumbach is nearly always an worthwhile voice).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Frances (Greta Gerwig) lives in New York, but she doesn’t really have an apartment. Frances is an apprentice for a dance company, but she’s not really a dancer. Frances has a best friend named Sophie, but they aren’t really speaking anymore. Frances throws herself headlong into her dreams, even as their possible reality dwindles. Frances wants so much more than she has, but lives her life with unaccountable joy and lightness. FRANCES HA is a modern comic fable in which Noah Baumbach explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure, and redemption.’

The film is due out May 17th in the US, although no UK date is set yet. [Read more…]

Ewan McGregor Joins HBO’s Corrections

November 23, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

He’s made guest appearances on the likes of ER, but now Ewan McGregor is set to take on his first regular TV show role, as he’s joined the cast of HBO’s upcoming drama The Corrections, according to EW, based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Jonathan Franzen.

The show will trace the lives of a Midwestern couple and their three adult children. Ewan McGregor will play the middle child, a Marxist academic who loses his tenure position after indulging in an affair with a student.

Noah Baumbach wrote the pilot with novelist Jonathan Franzen, and he is set to direct it as well, and will also produce the show. It was also recently revealed that HBO wants Anthony Hopkins for the series, but he decline. However with Chris Cooper and Dianne Wiest already onboard, it’s gonna be one hell of a cast even without Hopkins around. HBO is expected to debut The Corrections sometime in 2013.
