New Maleficent Teaser – Angelina Jolie is getting her bad fairy on

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first teaser for Maleficent was cool, but we didn’t get a particularly great look at Angelina Jolie in the title role. Now a new teaser has arrived which shows Angie in all her bad-plastic-surgery-looking cheekbone glory.

It also attempts to tie the movie in more directly to Disney’s animated 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty, letting us know this movie will be tied directly to that one, giving a different side to the tale and letting us know the tale of that film’s villain.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.’

It’s due in cinemas this May. [Read more…]

Angelina Jolie Is Looking Creepy In The First Official Maleficent Poster

November 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Disney is planning to release the very first trailer for Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, tomorrow, and ahead of that we have a great poster for the movie. Jolie’s certainly looking a little creepy with very piercing eyes. We’re not entirely sure why her head is wrapped in duct tape though.

John Lee Hancock Brought In To Oversee Malificent Reshoots

October 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-lee-hancockIt seems there may be a couple of issues with Walt Disney Pictures’s Maleficent, as the House Of Mouse has hired John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) to write new scenes for the upcoming reshoots. He won’t helm the additional material himself, but he is coming on board to help oversee the production with first-time director Robert Stromberg, according to THR.

Producer Joe Roth commented, “We asked him to be on set. He’s not directing. He wrote pages, and I hired a first-time director, and it’s good to have him on set. The movie is gorgeous to look at, and the last 75 minutes are really entertaining. The issue is the opening, which is being reshot over eight days.”

The extra shooting does not include any scenes with star Angelina Jolie, who recently started production on her next directorial effort Unbroken in Australia. Maleficent, a revisionist take on Sleeping Beauty told from the villain’s point of view, is still slated for release on May 30, 2014.

Although reshoots can be a sign of major problems, they’re increasingly being used to iron out kinks, which seems to be what is happening here if Jolie doesn’t need to be involved. It is farily rare to have another director oversee them though. The movie is in cinemas next summer.

Vivienne Jolie-Pitt Will Make Her Film Debut In Maleficent

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Filming started in June on Walt Disney Pictures’ Maleficent, with Angelina Jolie playing the title character. Today, the studio revealed that the actress’ four-year-old daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, has been cast as the young Princess Aurora.

Here’s the official announcement, “The Walt Disney Studios confirmed today that Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne will play a minor role as the child version of Princess Aurora opposite her mother in Maleficent, which hits theatres March 2014. The live-action film explores the origins of Disney’s most iconic villain, Maleficent, and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty.”

Elle Fanning stars as the older Princess Aurora, with Sharlto Copley portraying King Stefan. Robert Stromberg makes his directorial debut, working from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton (Alice in Wonderland). Casting four-year-old Vivienne as Princess Aurora does give an interesting hint at where the plot is going, and raises the possibility that in this film, Aurora is actually the daughter of Maleficent.

Maleficent Gets Brendan Thwaites As Its Handsome Prince

May 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the Sleeping Beauty tale, the handsome prince is a bit of an afterthought (which he is in most fairytales, because as long as you’re handsome and a prince, you don’t need any other qualifications to be worth marrying), but it appears Maleficent may give him a little more to do, as it will expand the story beyond the usual bounds, telling it from the evil fairy’s point of view (played by Angelina Jolie).

Now Deadline reports that the prince has been crowned, with Home & Away actor Brendan Thwaites set to take on the role. It’ll be his job to battle his way to the castle and wake Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning).

He joins a cast that also includes Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Kenneth Cranham, Sharlto Copley, Miranda Richardson and Sam Riley. Robert Stromberg will direct, with shooting set to start later this summer.

Imelda Staunton & Miranda Richardson Join Maleficent

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As seems to happen a lot of the time when Hollywood heads for fantasy territory, they’re busy filling out the cast of Disney’s fairytale film Maleficent with British talent. Angelina Jolie may be playing the title role, but now THR reports that Brits Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Kenneth Cranham, Sam Riley, and Lesley Manville have all signed up for the flick.

The film puts a new spin on the relationship between evil fairy Maleficent and Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), aka Sleeping Beauty. Imelda Staunton and Lesley Manville are playing Knotgrass and Flittle, two of the pixies who care for Aurora. Miranda Richardson is portraying Queen Ulla, Maleficent’s aunt who doesn’t like her evil niece. Sam Riley will be Diaval, Maleficent’s trusted right hand, who can transform himself between a raven and a human. Kenneth Cranham is playing the human king, the father of Aurora who tries to conquer the fairy kingdom.

Robert Stromberg is directing from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton. Production is due to begin this summer, with a March 14, 2014 release date already set.
