Gringo Trailer – David Oyelowo is a businessman whose life gets turned upside down

December 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Things are not going well for David Oyelowo in the upcoming thriller, Gringo. The movie has just released its first trailer, revealing what could be quite a fun film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Combining dark comedy with dramatic intrigue, Gringo joyrides across the border into Mexico, where all is not as it seems for mild-mannered American businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo). Crossing the line from citizen to criminal, Harold tangles with duplicitous business partners, Mexican drug lords, international mercenaries, and the DEA. As he attempts to survive in one of the most dangerous places on earth, the question lingers: is this ordinary man in way over his head, or is he two steps ahead? Directed by Nash Edgerton, who made his feature length directorial debut with the acclaimed Australian thriller The Square, Gringo also stars Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, Charlize Theron, Yul Vazquez, Thandie Newton, and Sharlto Copley.’

Gringo is due out in the UK on March 9th 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Free Fire (Blu-ray Review) – Armie Hammer & co. have a shootout & a half

August 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Brie Larson, Sam Riley, Jack Reynor
Director: Ben Wheatley
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 7th 2017 (UK)

After the complex and rather operatic JG Ballard adaptation High-Rise, Ben Wheatley has gone for something that’s far simpler in terms of plot, but perhaps just as complicated in terms of technical execution with Free Fire.

It’s the 1970s, and in a warehouse in Boston a group of American are hoping to sell some Irish men some guns. Things are already a little tense and distrustful when it’s revealed the weapons aren’t the exact ones ordered, but things get completely out of hand when one of the Yanks realises one of the Irish guys is the man who assaulted his cousin the night before. Free Fire Trailer – Ben Wheatley returns with Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy and Armie Hammer

September 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

free-fire-slideBen Wheatley made a big splash with the low budget Kill List, Sightseers and A Field In England, before getting a bit more cash and a starrier cast for the recent High-Rise. Now he’s returning with Free Fire, starring Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Jack Reynor, Babou Ceesay, Enzo Cilenti, Sam Riley, Michael Smiley and Noah Taylor.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Justine (Brie Larson) has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley) and a gang led by Vernon (Sharlto Copley) and Ord (Armie Hammer) who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart stopping game of survival ensues.’

The Hollars Trailer – John Krasinski has more problems than just a pregnant Anna Kendrick

July 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-hollars-slideSynopsis: ‘John Krasinski’s big-hearted family comedy takes a touching look at the ties that bind. Krasinski plays John Hollar, a frustrated graphic novelist anxiously awaiting the birth of his baby with girlfriend, Rebecca (Anna Kendrick). When his mother, Sally (Margo Martindale), is diagnosed with a brain tumor, John flies back home, where denial runs deep in the family tree. While his loving but fractured family pulls together to prepare Sally for surgery, John takes a second look at the life he left behind.’

The movie is Krasinksi’s sophomore directorial effort following his 2009 adaptation of David Foster Wallace‘s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. He also co-wrote The Promised Land, although Gus Van Sant directed that one.

The film will be in US cinemas on August 26th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Chappie (DVD Review)

July 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Ninja, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 13th 2015 (UK)

After District 9 there was huge amounts of excitement around director Neill Blomkamp, but Elysium disappointed and while Chappie is a bit of an improvement, it still has some problems.

Set a few years into the future, Johannesburg has become the first city in the world to deploy a robotic police force, with squadrons of humanoid ‘scouts’ keeping the peace and ensuring the criminals don’t get the upper hand. Deon (Dev Patel), who is one of the programmers behind the droids, thinks he’s worked out how to take things further – by giving a robot true human consciousness – but the company he works for aren’t interested. New Chappie Trailer – Take a fresh look at Neill Blomkamp’s robot tale

January 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chappie-posterThe first trailer for Chappie looked like it would be a bit of a charmer, with a little bit of an ET/Short Circuit vibe going on. However this new promo adds in a little bit of a harder edge, with a few echoes of Robocop (barring the violence) and more edge.

Still looks like it could be good though.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.’ Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Sharlto Copley star.’

The film’s due out March 6th. [Read more…]

Chappie Trailer – First look at Neill Blomkamp’s robot tale

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chappie-posterAfter the success of District 9, Neill Blomkamp had a bit of a misstep with the ambitious but massively flawed Elysium. However it looks like he could be back on track with Chappie, which from its first trailer is looks like it could to be a real charmer.

Maleficent (Cinema Review)

May 28, 2014 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Imelda Staunton, Sam Riley
Director: Robert Stromberg
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: May 28th 2014 (UK)

At long last one of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2014 has arrived. However it’s one of those films that could either have been excellent or a total mess. Thankfully Maleficent is in fact magnificent!

Disney has released a few very expensive live-action movie in the Spring and Summer in the last few years – Alice In Wonderland, John Carter, Lone Ranger etc – some more successful than others. However this time they will have the jackpot, despite a budget of an estimated $200M. If there’s any justice Maleficent will make that back in spades. [Read more…]

Maleficent Character Posters Show Off Sam Riley, Sharlto Copley, Angelina Jolie & More

May 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

maleficent-character-poster6Understandably most of the marketing for Maleficent has concentrated on the title character, as played by Angelina Jolie. However there are plenty more characters in this reinvention of the classic Sleeping Beauty.

To prove it comes a selection of character posters showing off Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), King Stefan (Sharlto Copley), Diaval (Sam Riley), the Pixies (Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville) and Maleficent herself.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land.

‘Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.’

It’s due in cinemas at the end of the month.

New Maleficent Teaser – Angelina Jolie is getting her bad fairy on

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first teaser for Maleficent was cool, but we didn’t get a particularly great look at Angelina Jolie in the title role. Now a new teaser has arrived which shows Angie in all her bad-plastic-surgery-looking cheekbone glory.

It also attempts to tie the movie in more directly to Disney’s animated 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty, letting us know this movie will be tied directly to that one, giving a different side to the tale and letting us know the tale of that film’s villain.
