Chappie (DVD Review)

July 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Ninja, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 13th 2015 (UK)

After District 9 there was huge amounts of excitement around director Neill Blomkamp, but Elysium disappointed and while Chappie is a bit of an improvement, it still has some problems.

Set a few years into the future, Johannesburg has become the first city in the world to deploy a robotic police force, with squadrons of humanoid ‘scouts’ keeping the peace and ensuring the criminals don’t get the upper hand. Deon (Dev Patel), who is one of the programmers behind the droids, thinks he’s worked out how to take things further – by giving a robot true human consciousness – but the company he works for aren’t interested. Neill Blomkamp Will Helm A New Alien Movie With Ridley Scott Producing

February 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neill-blomkampFor a long time it’s been known that Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has had a concept for an Alien movie, and in the last few weeks there have bee rumours that Fox might be ready to team with him to make it a reality. Now it turns out those rumours are true, as both Blomkamp (via Instagram) and Variety report he’s set to take on the xenomorph with Ridley Scott producing.

This won’t be Prometheus 2 though, which Ridley is still developing.

Blomkamp’s original concept which he’s mention previously involved Ellen Ripley, but in interviews several months ago Neill suggested that idea was probably dead. It’s not known whether that plan has been resurrected or whether Sigourney Weaver is attached to the film in any way.

It’s not clear where in the Alien timeline Blomkamp’s movie will fit, although insiders say it’ll take place years after Prometheus. For Alien: Resurrection they had to clone Ripley, but it’s possible Blomkamp’s movie will be set before then.

There is one good sign for Weaver’s involvement as she has a relationship with the director, having just worked with him on the upcoming Chappie. [Read more…]

New Chappie Trailer – Take a fresh look at Neill Blomkamp’s robot tale

January 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chappie-posterThe first trailer for Chappie looked like it would be a bit of a charmer, with a little bit of an ET/Short Circuit vibe going on. However this new promo adds in a little bit of a harder edge, with a few echoes of Robocop (barring the violence) and more edge.

Still looks like it could be good though.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.’ Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Sharlto Copley star.’

The film’s due out March 6th. [Read more…]

Chappie Trailer – First look at Neill Blomkamp’s robot tale

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chappie-posterAfter the success of District 9, Neill Blomkamp had a bit of a misstep with the ambitious but massively flawed Elysium. However it looks like he could be back on track with Chappie, which from its first trailer is looks like it could to be a real charmer.

The movie is in cinemas next spring. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Sigourney Weaver Joins Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie

October 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sigourney-WeaverThere was five years between District 9 and Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up, Elysium, but he’s ensuring there’s no such gap until his next movie, as Chappie has just started shooting in South Africa. And just as filming begins, Sigourney Weaver has signed on.

Blomkamp also co-wrote the screenplay with Terri Tatchell. The brief synopsis says, ‘After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.’

The film stars Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver, Ninja, Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Brandon Auret leading the human cast.

Hugh Jackman Joins Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie

September 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hugh-jackman-600pxWhile there was a big gap between District 9 and Elysium, Neill Blomkamp is working quicker this time around, hoping to shoot Chappie early next year. Sharlto Copley and Dev Patel have already signed on to star, and now Hugh Jackman has revealed he’ll be in the movie too.

Hugh announced the news during a press conference for Prisoners Zurich Film Festival, where he is receiving the Golden Icon Award, saying that “I am doing a role in Neill’s new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg. I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year.”

He wouldn’t give any specifics about the character, the story is about an android (Copley), who is captured and re-programmed by two South African gangsters (Die Antwoord’s Ninja Visser and Yolandi Visser) for their own nefarious purposes. Bleeding Cool suggests that Hugh Jackman is playing a resourceful CEO who ends up on the wrong side of these gangsters. Dev Patel also stars in an unspecified role.

The film will be out on March 27th, 2015 release date.

Extended Elysium Trailer – Fresh look at the Matt Damon sci-fi

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new, longer trailer for Elysium has arrived, which gives us a great feel for the look and plot of Neill Blomkamps’s movie. It certainly look pretty cool, with great visuals and an interesting idea behind it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.’

Neill Blomkamp’s film hits US cinemas on August 9th and the UK on August 26th. [Read more…]

New Elysium Clip – Matt Damon is becoming bionic

July 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Much of the promotion of Elysium has centred on Matt Damon wearing a strange suit of armour that allows him to do things he normally couldn’t. Now a new clip has emerged letting us see Damon’s character just after he’s got that armour, is getting used to have the tech attached to him.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Matt Damon Gets A Close-Up In A New Elysium Poster

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elysium-poster2
I’m presuming they think Matt Damon will be a big draw for Elysium, or otherwise there’s not much point releasing a poster that’s essentially just a giant Damon face. It’s very nice, although doesn’t exactly give much info about the film.

Dev Patel In Talks For Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dev-PatelThere was a big gap between District 9 and Elysium, but director Neill Blomkamp is working hard to ensure his next movie doesn’t take as long. He’s already signed up old cohort Sharlto Copley for the movie, and now THR reports that Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel is in early talks for the movie.

If he does sign on, the movie would take him back to the slums, as while much of the story is being kept under wraps, it is known that Chappie is based on a 2005 short by Blomkamp, called Tetra Vaal, which was a fake ad for a robotic police force patrolling the slums of South Africa (you can watch that below). It certainly seems Blomkamp is keeping with the sci-fi with a social edge.

Blomkamp’s next movie, Elysium hits US cinemas on August 9th and comes to the UK on August 26th.
