Wicked Movie Finally Gets A Release Date

June 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wicked-stage-slideFor almost as long as it’s been playing on Broadway, a film version of the hit musical Wicked has been in the works. However, for most of that time it’s been trapped in development hell. With musicals tending to have a mixed record at the cinemas, it’s believed executives at Universal were nervous about making such an expensive musical movie.

It also didn’t help when Disney made Oz The Great And Powerful, which delayed the Wicked movie while they judged whether that film would mean people wouldn’t want another Oz movie. But while the adaptation has had major issues, Universal has never given up on it.

Now, it finally looks like they’re getting serious, as a December 20th, 2019, release date has been set. It’s still early days though, as while it has a director in the form of Stephen Daldry, there’s no cast attached as yet. However, giving it a release date at least signifies they’re getting really serious about bringing the musical to the screen.

Trash (Blu-ray Review)

June 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen, Wagner Moura, Selton Mello
Director: Stephen Daldry
Running Time: 114 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 8th 2015 (UK)

I’d like to think that when putting Trash together the people behind it weren’t sitting there purely trying to think what would be most likely to win them lots of Oscars, but it does slightly come across like that at times. You’ve got a setting that is Slumdog Millionaire meets City of God, a plot that’s somewhat gritty but also a bit of a fairytale, a director who’s already got three Best Director Oscar nominations under his belt (Stephen Daldry), a script from Richard ‘Four Weddings’ Curtis and the lead roles given to sweet, non-professional Brazilian kids.

If they were hoping for Oscars, they failed, but the movie isn’t bad at all, using its semi-fairytale story to create something that is sort of a family/young adult film, but one that wants viewers young and old to know that the slums can be a dark and dangerous place, and that children aren’t immune from that. Trash Trailer – First look at Rooney Mara & Martin Sheen in Stephen Daldry’s movie

August 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

trash-poster-slideBilly Elliot, The Reader and The Hours director Stephen Daldry returns with Trash this winter, which looks like it’s bidding to be this year’s Slumdog Millionaire.

Now we can take a look at the movie as the first trailer for the movie has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When two trash-picking boys from Rio’s slums find a wallet in amongst the daily detritus of their local dump, little do they imagine that their lives are about to change forever. But when the local police show up, offering a handsome reward for the wallet’s return, the boys, Rafael (RICKSON TEVEZ) and Gardo (LUIS EDUARDO), realise that what they’ve found must be important. Teaming up with their friend Rato (GABRIEL WEINSTEIN), the trio begins an extraordinary adventure as they try to hang onto the wallet, evade the police, and uncover the secrets it contains.

‘Along the way, the boys will have to figure out friend from foe, as they piece together the story of the wallet’s owner José angelo (WAGNER MOURA) and realise they can’t trust the police, led by the dangerous Frederico (SELTON MELLO). But a pair of American missionaries working in their favela – the disillusioned Father Julliard (MARTIN SHEEN) and his young assistant Olivia (ROONEY MARA) – might just have the power to knock on the right doors. Trash is directed by STEPHEN DALDRY and written by RICHARD CURTIS based on the book by ANDY MULLIGAN.’

A January 30th 2015 release is set. [Read more…]

First Poster For Stephen Daldry’s Trash Debuts

August 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

TRASH-One-Sheet-posterWhile it’s Rio setting might make you think it would have made sense to release Trash to coincide with this year’s soccer World Cup, it appears they have award hopes for Stephen Daldry’s new movie, which looks like it’s hoping to be this year’s Slumdog Millionaire.

Seeing as Daldry has a Best Director Oscar nomination for three of the four movies he’s made – Billy Elliot, The Reader and The Hours, only missing out on a nom for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close – you can understand why they might think it could be an awards contender. The fact it has a script by Richard Curtis doesn’t hurt either.

Now the first poster for the film has arrived, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When two trash-picking boys from Rio’s slums find a wallet in amongst the daily detritus of their local dump, little do they imagine that their lives are about to change forever. Rooney Mara & Martin Sheen Take On Stephen Daldry’s Trash

July 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rooney-maraStephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) has an impressive track record on film, as every movie he’s made has been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. He’ll be hoping to continue that with Trash, based on Andy Mulligan’s children’s novel.

Now Deadline reports that he’s starting to fill out the cast, with Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen signing up to star in the film. Elysium’s Wagner Moura and Os Maias’ Selton Mello will also appear.

Trash is about ‘three poverty-stricken boys (played by newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein) who discover something unusual, mysterious and dangerous in a city dump in the Third World-set story.’ Martin Sheen is set to play Father Juilliard, while Rooney Mara will be Olivia, an NGO worker.

The movie will start shooting next month in Rio de Janeiro, with a relatively quick turnaround planned, as they hope to get the movie in cinemas May 2014.

Stephen Daldry Sought For Wicked Film Adaptation

July 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The musical Wicked actually started its life being developed as a movie as Universal, before heading off to Broadway and becoming one of the most successful shows ever. Even since it became massive on stage, there’s been talk about Universal mounting it as a big budget film, but it’s always been on the backburner.

Now it seems they’re ready to put it back on the fast track, and according to Deadline they’re hoping to woo Stephen Daldry to direct. He’d certainly seem a good choice, as he’s a veteran of both stage and screen, and knows plenty about mounting a musical, such as directing the West End version of his film hit Billy Elliot. Universal is also looking towards Disney’s Oz The Great And Powerful, and betting that all thing Oz will be big business after that movie hits screen early next year.

Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire’s books, looks at the youth of the green-skinned Ephalba, who will one day becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. She doesn’t start out evil though, and only becomes an outsider because of other people, including the rather duplicitous ‘good witch’ Glinda.

At the moment, getting Daldry to direct is more what Universal wants than a reality, but they’re likely to be courting him over the next few weeks.
