Trash (Blu-ray Review)

June 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen, Wagner Moura, Selton Mello
Director: Stephen Daldry
Running Time: 114 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 8th 2015 (UK)

I’d like to think that when putting Trash together the people behind it weren’t sitting there purely trying to think what would be most likely to win them lots of Oscars, but it does slightly come across like that at times. You’ve got a setting that is Slumdog Millionaire meets City of God, a plot that’s somewhat gritty but also a bit of a fairytale, a director who’s already got three Best Director Oscar nominations under his belt (Stephen Daldry), a script from Richard ‘Four Weddings’ Curtis and the lead roles given to sweet, non-professional Brazilian kids.

If they were hoping for Oscars, they failed, but the movie isn’t bad at all, using its semi-fairytale story to create something that is sort of a family/young adult film, but one that wants viewers young and old to know that the slums can be a dark and dangerous place, and that children aren’t immune from that. Futuro Beach (Cinema Review)

May 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Wagner Moura, Clemens Schick, Jesuíta Barbosa
Director: Karim Aïnouz
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 8th 2015 (UK)

Futuro Beach had a good run at film festivals following its debut in Berlin. That’s not really too surprising, as it’s the sort of movie that does well at fests, as it’s keen to show cinema as art and also present film more as a sensory and philosophical experience than simply as straightforward storytelling. As a result it’s not a film for everyone, but some will find it entrancing.

The movie is split into three chapters, the first introducing us to closeted Brazilian lifeguard Donato (Wagner Moura), who manages to save a German man called Konrad (Clemens Schick) from drowning, but is unable to rescue Konrad’s friend whose body is lost at sea. With both of them in need of solace and affirmation they sleep together. That leads to a relationship and the second chapter, where Donato follows Konrad back to Berlin. This gives Donato the chance to explore his sexuality and the possibilities of life away from the pressures of family and Brazilian society. However, not everything runs smooth for the couple. New Pics Of Matt Damon In Elysium Emerge

April 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been a long wait for Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to District 9, but Elysium is heading our way in a few months, with an August 9th US release and a September 20th UK release now set.

The sci-fi flick is set in 2159 when two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Now a couple of new pics have emerged. If you’re wondering what the cobbled together tech that Damon is wearing is, it’s machinery that’s prolonging his life, but which makes him a threat to Elysium. The other pics features Wagner Moura, and Alice Braga.
