New The BFG Trailer – Steven Spielberg takes us into Roald Dahl’s giant world

May 16, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bfg-slideThe BFG has just premiered at Cannes with early reviews suggest the new collaboration between ET writer and director Melissa Mathison (who sadly died shortly after completing the screenplay) and director Steven Spielberg, may not be as good as their earlier film, but still pretty entertaining.

The tie in with the premiere, a new trailer has been released, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“The BFG” is the exciting tale of a young London girl and the mysterious Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.  Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, “The BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) was published in 1982 and has been enchanting readers of all ages ever since.  Dahl’s books, which also include “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Matilda” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” are currently available in 58 languages and have sold over 200 million copies worldwide.’

It’ll be in UK cinemas in July. [Read more…]

Sam Mendes To Direct Voyeur’s Motel With Steven Spielberg Producing

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam-MendesAfter a couple of trips into the world of James Bond, it seems Sam Mendes is moving on, as Variety reports that he’s set to direct Voyeur’s Motel, which also has Steven Spielberg set to produce.

It’s a film that could certainly be interesting, as it deals with a salacious subject that raised all manner of ethical concerns. It’ll be based on Gay Talese’s soon to be published non-fiction book, which is about a time back in the 80s when he was research a book about sex in America, when he received a note from a motel owner called Gerald Foos, which read, ‘Dear Mr. Talese: Since learning of your long awaited study of coast-to-coast sex in America, which will be included in your soon to be published book, ‘Thy Neighbor’s Wife,’ I feel I have important information that I could contribute to its contents or to contents of a future book.’

It turned out that what Foos had was a motel which he’d turned into a voyeur’s paradise, where he could spy on his guests having sex. Rather than turning him in to the authorities, Talese signed a confidentiality agreement so he could access the journals and more than Foos had. However, it soon turned out the Foos wasn’t completely reliable and Talese couldn’t completely escape the ethical considerations of what he was now complicit in.

It’s not clear when the movie will shoot.

Steven Spielberg Set To Reunite With Mark Rylance For The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

April 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steven-spielbergIt seems that Steven Spielberg and Mark Rylance has found their muses in one another. Despite massive stage success, Rylance has made relatively few films, but now he’s set to work with Spielberg for the third time in less than two years (after Bridge Of Spies and The BFG), with The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara.

Deadline reports that the movie will be based on Pulitzer Prize-winner David Kertzer’s book, with a script by fellow Pulitzer honoree, Tony Kushner (Angels In America, Lincoln). Rylance will play Pope Pius IX in the film, which ‘recounts the story of a young Jewish boy in Bologna, Italy in 1858 who, having been secretly baptized, is forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. His parents’ struggle to free their son becomes part of a larger political battle that pits the Papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification.’

The movie will apparently be Spielberg’s next movie, which is a slight surprise as he’s been busy casting Ready Player One. However, with that movie not due out until 2018 and The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara not due to start shooting until early 2017, it’s possible he will actually shoot the latter after Ready Player One, but it will arrive in cinemas beforehand.

April 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bfg-teaser-poster-slideA couple of month ago we had a fun little teaser for The BFG, but it didn’t show us much, other than it was about two people – one very small, and the other so enormous we only saw his hand. Simon Pegg Up For Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

simon-peggThe cast of Spielberg’s Ready Player One continues to grow, with THR reporting that Simon Pegg has signed up for the movie. He joins Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn and Tye Sheridan, who’s set to be the lead character of Wade Watts.

The movie will be based on Ernie Cline’s novel. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.’

Pegg is in talks to play Ogden Morrow, the co-creator of OASIS. The film should be in cinemas December 15th, 2017, with shooting expected to start in the next few months.

Indiana Jones 5 Announced For 2019 With Harrison Ford & Steven Spielberg Returning

March 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Indiana-JonesEver since Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull there have been rumblings about another film outing for Indy (with many hoping another movie would be made just so the franchise didn’t go out with its underwhelming last installment). There have even been suggestions that Harrison Ford only agreed to make The Force Awakens if Disney promised to make Indy 5.

Now the House Of Mouse has announced that’s exactly what they’re doing, as it’s been revealed that Indiana Jones 5 will be released on July 19th, 2019. There’s no mention of George Lucas though, who was intimately involved in the earlier films and came up with all the stories. As with Star Wars, it’s likely he gave up creative control when he sold Lucasfilm, and if he’s involved at all it will be in a reduced capacity.

There’s also no mention of Shia Labeouf, and it seems unlikely he’ll be back as Mutt (to may people’s relief). Nor is there any info about the plot.

Here’s the full statement from Disney:

SPIELBERG AND FORD REUNITE AS INDIANA JONES RETURNS TO THEATERS JULY 19, 2019

Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on July 19, 2019, for a fifth epic adventure in the blockbuster series. Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office.

The movie will be based on Ernie Cline’s novel. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. It’s Big Meets Little In A New Poster For Spielberg’s The BFG

January 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bfg-teaser-poster

A few weeks ago we got our first teaser look at Spielberg’s new movie version of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book, The BFG. Now that’s been joined by a poster, featuring the legs of the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance) and his unlikely friend Sophie (Ruby Barnhill).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The talents of two of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl and Steven Spielberg – finally unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life. “The BFG” is the exciting tale of a young London girl and the mysterious Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.  “I think it was kind of genius of Roald Dahl to be able to empower the children. It was very, very brave of him to introduce that combination of darkness and light,’ and being able to do scary, but also be redemptive at the same time and teach a lesson, an enduring lesson, to everyone, it was a wonderful thing for Dahl to have done, and it was one of the things that attracted me to want to direct this Dahl book,” says Spielberg.

‘Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, “The BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) was published in 1982 and has been enchanting readers of all ages ever since.  Dahl’s books, which also include “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Matilda” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” are currently available in 58 languages and have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. Originally created as a bedtime story, “The BFG” was Dahl’s own favorite of all his stories. “It was very important for us to be loyal to the language,” says Spielberg, “and the great writer Melissa Mathison, who also wrote ‘E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,’ wrote “The BFG.”

It’ll be in cinemas in July.

Ben Mendelsohn Wanted For Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One

January 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben-Mendelsohn

Back in September Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One got its first star when Olivia Cooke signed up for the movie. Now she may be getting some company, as Variety reports Ben Mendelsohn is in early talks for the film. Assuming he ends up joining the movie, he’ll be the villain.

Mendelsohn is best known for Animal Kingdom, The Dark Knight Rises, Exodus: Gods & Kings, but is likely to become a better known name by the end of the year, thanks to his major role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is out in December.

The main thing the movie is currently lacking is someone to play Wade, but that’s likely to change soon, as Spielberg is currently testing a range of young actors to play the role. The film should be in cinemas December 15th, 2017.

The BFG Teaser Trailer – Steven Spielberg takes on Roald Dahl’s classic tale

December 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-bfg-pic1Steven Spielberg is going back into family friendly territory with a live-action version of Roald Dahl’s classic The BFG. The teaser trailer has arrived, which gives the whole thing as slightly more spooky and mysterious vibe than fans od the book might have imagined.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The talents of two of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl and Steven Spielberg – finally unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life. Directed by Spielberg, “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.

‘The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumbers and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams.

‘Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Says Spielberg, “It’s a story about friendship, it’s a story about loyalty and protecting your friends and it’s a story that shows that even a little girl can help a big giant solve his biggest problems.” Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.

‘Directed by three-time Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg (“Bridge of Spies,” “Schindler’s List,” ”Saving Private Ryan”) from a screenplay by Melissa Mathison (“E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “The Black Stallion”) based on the best-selling novel by Roald Dahl, “The BFG” stars three-time Tony Award® and two-time Olivier Award winner Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” “Wolf Hall”), newcomer Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Downton Abbey”), Jemaine Clement (“Rio 2,” “The Flight of the Conchords”), Rebecca Hall (“The Gift,” “Iron Man 3”), Rafe Spall (“The Big Short,” “Prometheus”) and Bill Hader (“Inside Out,” “Trainwreck”). The film is produced by Spielberg, Frank Marshall (“Jurassic World,” “The Bourne Ultimatum”) and Sam Mercer (“Snow White and the Huntsman,” “The Sixth Sense”) with Kathleen Kennedy (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Lincoln”), John Madden (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Shakespeare in Love”), Kristie Macosko Krieger (“Bridge of Spies,” “Lincoln”), Michael Siegel (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Rise of the Guardians”), Frank Smith and Naia Cucukov serving as executive producers.

‘Roald Dahl’s “The BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) was first published in 1982 and has been enchanting readers of all ages ever since. Dahl’s books, which also include “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach” and “Matilda,” are currently available in 58 languages and have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. “The BFG” is the only book of Dahl’s that has never been adapted into a feature film. Originally created as a bedtime story, “The BFG” was Dahl’s own favourite of all his stories. “It was very important for us to be loyal to the language,” says Spielberg, “and the great writer Melissa Mathison, who also wrote ‘E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,’ wrote “The BFG.”

“The BFG” opens in cinemas on July 22nd 2016, the year that marks the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth.’ [Read more…]
