Age Of Consent Trailer – Inside the sex-infused world of one of London’s gay leather bars

July 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

age-of-consent-poster-slideThe documentary Age Of Consent premiered back in March at London’s BFI Flare Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, and now it’s set to make its NYC debut on Saturday July 26th At NewFest! That seems like a good reason to take a look at the trailer for this no-holds barred look in the gay leather bar scene.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘This documentary by festival favourites Lum and Verow tells the story of The Hoist (open since 1996 and now one of London’s only surviving leather bars) and in doing so tells the story of gay sex from decriminalization to Grindr, taking in police entrapment, the Spanner case, safer sex and Section 28. Age of Consent is informative and eye-opening – did you know more gay men were arrested and convicted of gross indecency in 1989 than in 1966? – while being playful, funny and downright filthy.

‘Described by the barman as a ‘sneaky, sexy, dirty wee hole’, The Hoist and its patrons could be seen as representing the antithesis of the recent trend in mainstream gay politics towards assimilation. But, with encroaching gentrification and more people using the internet to hook up, what does the future hold?’

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Tumbledown (DVD)

August 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Brad Hallowell, Brett Faulkner, Todd Verow
Director: Todd Verow
Running Time: 82 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: August 26th 2013

Todd Verow is a virtual one-man gay film industry. He started making films in the mid-90s and has become increasingly prolific since, with the likes of Vacationland, Between Something & Nothing and last year’s Bad Boy Street. His last few films have been narratively and tonally more ambitious than the ones that came before and that continues with Tumbledown, which is based on Verow’s own experiences (and also stars him in the role of Jay). Soon, copious amounts of sex, drugs and alcohol lead to a dark obsession and even darker complications. Always bold and never less than riveting, ‘Tumbledown’ is sure to leave you breathless.’

Bad Boy Street (DVD)

October 17, 2012 By Lewis Shepherd Leave a Comment

Starring: Florence d'Azémar, Yann de Monterno, Kevin Miranda
Director: Todd Verow
Running Time: 79 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: October 22nd 2012

With the romantic backdrop of Paris, Bad Boy Street tells the story of how two men strike up ad unlikely relationship after one is found drunk and passed out in the middle of the street. Although a bit of a slow starter, the film picks up midway through and keeps you enticed by the mysterious Brad (Kevin Miranda) and wondering where his unlikely relationship with Claude (Yann de Monterno) will go.

Amidst the main theme of the unlikely relationship developing between the two strangers we later find a more interesting theme running through the film, which takes a look at how being closeted can be harmful. There are also the secrets that bubble behind the film sets in Hollywood, and questions about just how much control PR agents have over their clients. However if this undercurrent of thought didn’t develop midway through the film, then I would be talking about it in a completely different way, as I almost lost interest. [Read more…]
