Colin Farrell Eyes Arthur & Lancelot

March 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In January, Warner Bros. put their medieval adventure Arthur & Lancelot on hold, even though the cast was coming together, a March 15th, 2013 release date was set and it was preparing to shoot this spring. It was assumed that this was the end for the movie, but now Variety reports that Colin Farrell is in talks to star as one of the title characters in a revived version of the flick.

Kit Harington and Joel Kinnaman were previously attached to star, but both actors had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts once the project was put on hold (and it’s said Warner were slightly reticent about the duo’s lack of star power, which was one of the reason they put the film on hold). It isn’t known which of the title characters Colin Farrell will play.

David Dobkin is directing Arthur & Lancelot from his own screenplay. Little is known about the story, although it is said to be an action epic in the vein of Braveheart. Although the project is moving forward once again, it still isn’t known when shooting may start, or when Warner Bros. is targeting Arthur & Lancelot for release. It also isn’t known what happened to the $90-$130 million budget that Warner balked at first time around.

Arthur & Lancelot Has Budget Problems

December 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

After a rather dodgy year for the studios at the box office, the purse strings are snapping tight all over Hollywood. While in good times studios have tended to allow the budgets of big projects to bloat (indeed many producers rely on it, pitching the studios a budget way less than what they know it will cost, in the belief the studio will stump up the extra cash once they’re invested in a project), now they’re stamping down.

Earlier this year The Lone Ranger nearly got cancelled after its budget ballooned to well over $200 million and just yesterday Alex Proyas’ Paradise Lost was put on hold after Warner asked them to cut back the slowly creeping costs. Now Deadline reports the same studio is looking at another costly project, Arthur & Lancelot, and asking the makers of that to do the same. Originally budgeted at $90 million, the film has since crept up to around $130 million. That’s made Warner sweat, especially as with Joel Kinnaman and Kit Harington cast in the title roles, there isn’t a star to hang the movie on.

As a result Warner has told the producers they’re welcome to try and set the project up at another studio, or to bring costs down and stay with them. It isn’t known which of those option director David Dobkin would prefer, but in the current climate he may find it difficult to get anyone to pay for a $100 million+ Arthurian film with no big stars.

The projects mentioned above aren’t the only ones that have come a cropper over costs recently, as both Guillermo Del Tror’s At The Mountains Of Madness and Ron Howard’s ambitious take on The Dark Tower have foundered for the same reason.

Kit Harington Signs On For Arthur & Lancelot

November 21, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Warner is going in an interesting direction with their upcoming take on the Arthurian legends, Arthur & Lancelot, as rather than going for star names, they’re filling the cast with relatively obscure up and comers. Joel Kinnaman, from the TV show The Killing, signed on to be Lancelot a couple of weeks ago and they’ve now cast Game of Thrones’ star Kit Harington as King Arthur, according to THR.

If you’ve never heard on either of them, it wouldn’t be too surprising, but they are both talented.

A few scheduling issues with his work on Game Of Thrones need to be worked out on Harington’s side, but once those issues are resolved, filming should begin in early 2012. The movie is being directed by David Dobkin, who is best known for his comedies, such as The Change-Up and Wedding Crashers. However the Arthurian film will be a change of pace, as while plot details for Arthur & Lancelot have yet to be divulged, it will be a serious, action heavy adventure.

Warner has already set a release date of 15th, 2013 for Arthur & Lancelot.

Gary Oldman Sought For Arthur & Lancelot

November 4, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

As we mentioned in an storyearlier today, Warner Bros. is keen to get Gary Oldman onboard its live-action version of Akira, but that’s not the only thing they’d like him in, as Deadline reports that they’re also offering him a role in their new take on Arthurian legend, Arthur & Lancelot.

Oldman is wanted for the role of Merlin in the movie, opposite the recently cast Joel Kinnaman as Lancelot. David Dobkin is directing Arthur & Lancelot from his own screenplay, which is a reimagined version of the King Arthur and Sir Lancelot tales (although it’s not known exactly how things have been reimagined).

As yet it isn’t known if Oldman will accept the role.

Joel Kinnaman Gets The Lead In Arthur & Lancelot

October 30, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The TV show The Killing seems to be a breeding ground for stars, with Mireille Enos is the upcoming Gangster Squad and World War Z, and now THR reports her Swedish co-star Joel Kinnaman landing one of the main leads in Warner Bros’ Arthur & Lancelot.

The film will be based on David Dobkin’s spec screenplay (he’ll also direct), which as the name suggests is a reimagining of the King Arthur and Sir Lancelot stories. It’s likely we’ll see a friends become enemies tale with them falling out over Guinevere.

Casting is still ongoing for the King Arthur role, with actors such as Kit Harington, Sam Claflin, Dominic Cooper, Hans Matheson, Jim Sturgess, Benjamin Walker, and Liam Hemsworth all in contention. It isn’t certain when the $90 million movie will shoot, but it’s already got a March 2013 release date set.
