CBGB Trailer – Alan Rickman leads a great cast in a biopic of the legendary club

August 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Randall Miller has pulled together a great cast for CBGB, with the likes of Alan Rickman, Rupert Grint, Malin Akerman, Ashley Greene, Kerry Bishé, Johnny Galecki, Donal Logue, Ryan Hurst, Justin Bartha and Bradley Whitford and quite a few more.

The movie is about the famed (and now sadly closed) CBGB punk rock club in New York City, following Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman), who wants to start a club for country, bluegrass and blues (the CBGB of the club’s name) but found it difficult to get acts, and so ended up allowing the likes of The Ramones and Blondie to play, helping give punk a foothold in America.

Along with Rickman, Ashley Greene plays his daughter, while Joel David Moore, Julian Acosta and Steven Schub are three of the Ramones; Malin Akerman is Debbie Harry; Mickey Sumner is Patti Smith; Rupert Grint will be Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome; and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is Iggy Pop. And that’s only a few of the actors taking on classic punk acts.

The film should be out later this year. [Read more…]

Twilight’s Ashley Greene Heads For CBGB

June 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The increasingly massive cast of CBGB has got one of its final pieces, with Twilight actress Ashley Greene taking on one of the leads, playing Lisa Kristal, according to Variety, in the movie about the famed New York club that helped give birth to punk in the US.

The film is a biopic of Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman), who wanted to start a club for country, bluegrass and blues (the CBGB of the club’s name) but found it difficult to get acts, and so ended up allowing the likes of The Ramones and Blondie to play, helping give punk a foothold in America. Lisa Kristal, Hilly’s daughter, was often in conflict with her father, and ended up taking over from his as the club’s business manager. A law-school graduate, Lisa was able to help keep the club afloat until it closed its doors for the final time in 2008.

Along with Rickman and Greene, Joel David Moore, Julian Acosta and Steven Schub will play three of the Ramones; Malin Akerman is Debbie Harry; Mickey Sumner is Patti Smith; Rupert Grint will be Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome; and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is Iggy Pop. It’s quite a cast, with a few more roles of musicians who played the club still to be cast. Shooting begins later this month, with Randall Miller directing.

Malin Akerman Set To Play Debbie Harry In CBGB

May 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week Alan Rickman signed up to play CBGB founder Hilly Kristal, shortly followed by Rupert Grint as one of the musicians who helped make the New York club famous, Now director Randall Miller has added a new list of actors to the film, including Malin Akerman, Stana Katic, Joel David Moore, Julian Acosta, Richard De Klerk, Josh Zuckerman, John Holstrom, Ryan Hurst and Estelle Harris.

The film is a biopic of Kristal, who in the late 1970s sought to create a venue for county, bluegrass and blues music (the CBGB of the name) in New York. However, after acts playing that music were tough to find, Kristal allowed local performers to play. That decision was precipitous, as the club soon became ground zero for rock & roll as well as punk, launching the careers of performers such as The Ramones, Blondie and Patti Smith.

Variety reports that Akerman is set to play the iconic lead singer of Blondie, Debbie Harry. Julian Acosta will be Johnny Ramone, with Joel David Moore as his brother, Joey. THR adds that Stana Katic is set to play producer Genya Raven, who was also the lead singer of Goldie & The Gingerbreads. De Klerk will be CBGB soundman Taxi, Hurst is Mad Mountain and Harris will be Kristal’s mother, Bertha.

Shooting starts next month.
