Eye In The Sky (DVD Review)

August 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Alan Rickman, Barkhad Abdi, Phoebe Fox
Director: Gavin Hood
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 15th 2016 (UK)

When people talk about modern warfare, it tends to be in rather black and white terms. It’s either people concerned about collateral damage who tend to ignore the moral quagmire that killing a few innocent people may end up saving many more, or the more gung-ho attitude that ignores the guiltless that get caught up in it. Eye In The Sky attempts to explore the grey areas.

In Nairobi, a British and American task force are tracking some Islamic extremist terrorists, but are mainly doing so from afar, using drones controlled from the US and other tech piloted by a local (Barkhad Abdi) on the ground. They discover that three of their most wanted targets are together in a house. However, plans to capture them quickly change to the need for a possible kill-strike, when they realise there are bomb belts in the house and a suicide attack is imminent. Things get even more complex when a young girl enters the kill zone and they realise a strike is likely to kill her. [Read more…]

The Wonderful Alan Rickman Dies, Aged 69

January 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alan-rickmanIt’s a sad week for British artists this week, as following the death of David Bowie it’s been announced that Alan Rickman has died, aged 69. A statement from his family revealed that he had been suffering from cancer, which sadly took his life.

While he didn’t make his movie debut until 1988 as Hans Gruber in Die Hard (but what a debut), he had already appeared in several British TV shows and received massive amounts of praise (including a Tony nomination) for his stage work. Indeed it was while playing a scheming character in Dangerous Liaisons on Broadway that he came to the attention of producer Joel Silver, who cast him in Die Hard.

After going up against John McClane, he became one of Britain’s most respected screen actors, thanks to films such as Truly Madly Deeply, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (for which he won a BAFTA), Sense & Sensibility, Galaxy Quest, Sweeney Todd and Love Actually. Of course, he also found a legion of fans with his pitch perfect portrayal of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies.

As well as acting he directed two movies, 1997’s The Winter Guest and 2014’s A Little Chaos, both of which he also provided the screenplay for.

Unsurprisingly news of his passing has been greeted with sadness by those who knew and admired him, including the younger cast of Harry Potter, many of whom noted that despite the villainous characters he often played on screen, he was one of the most generous and influential people they knew as they grew up.

Daniel Radcliffe summed it up with a post on Google+, where he wrote: ‘Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I’ve ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I’m pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn’t have to do that. I know other people who’ve been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say, ‘If you call Alan, it doesn’t matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he’s doing, he’ll get back to you within a day.’

‘People create perceptions of actors based on the parts they played so it might surprise some people to learn that contrary to some of the sterner (or downright scary) characters he played, Alan was extremely kind, generous, self-deprecating and funny. And certain things obviously became even funnier when delivered in his unmistakable double-bass.

‘As an actor, he was one of the first of the adults on Potter to treat me like a peer rather than a child. Working with him at such a formative age was incredibly important and I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career. Film sets and theatre stages are all far poorer for the loss of this great actor and man.’

Eye In The Sky Trailer – Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman & Aaron Paul deal with the difficulty of drone strikes

December 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eye-in-the-sky-aaron-paulDirector Gavin Hood dropped a big stinker with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but he had a little more success with 2013’s Ender’s Game. Now he’s getting serious with Eye In The Sky, which takes on the difficulties and drama of the military’s use of unmanned drones.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘EYE IN THE SKY stars Helen Mirren as Colonel Katherine Powell, a UK-based military officer in command of a top secret drone operation to capture terrorists in Kenya. Through remote surveillance and on-the-ground intel, Powell discovers the targets are planning a suicide bombing and the mission escalates from “capture” to “kill.” But as American pilot Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) is about to engage, a nine-year old girl enters the kill zone, triggering an international dispute reaching the highest levels of US and British government over the moral, political, and personal implications of modern warfare.’

The movie premiered to decent reviews at TIFF and will be seen in cinemas next spring. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

A Little Chaos (DVD Review)

August 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alan Rickman, Helen McRory, Stanley Tucci
Director: Alan Rickman
Running Time: 117 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 24th 2015 (UK)

It’s 17th Century France and King Louis XIV (Alan Rickman) is on the throne. He wants a revamp of the Versailles gardens and hires architect Andre Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts) to build it. However, he needs help from a landscape artist and so brings in widower Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet).

They have a few initial problems as he likes classical geometry and straight lines, while she is more forward-thinking and asymmetrical in her design (metaphor alert). Despite this, the two begin to fall for one another. This should be okay as Andre has an open marriage, however his wife (Helen McRory) isn’t keen on the feelings he develops for Sabine and plans to destroy what they are creating together. A Little Chaos Trailer – Kate Winslet returns to period drama in Alan Rickman’s movie

December 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A-Little-ChaosAlan Rickman is a great actor, but now he’s turning director (technically for the second time after 1997’s The Winter Guest) and going period drama with A Little Chaos.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A LITTLE CHAOS re-imagines the creation of the Rockwork Grove, one small element of the Sun King, Louis XIV’s building of the magnificent Palace of Versailles.

‘Madame Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet) is an unlikely candidate for landscape architect of the still‐to-be-completed Palace of Versailles. She has little time for the classical, ordered designs of the man who hires her, the famous architect Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts). However, as she works on her creation, she finds herself drawn to the enigmatic Le Nôtre and forced to negotiate the perilous rivalries and intricate etiquette of the court of King Louis XIV (Alan Rickman). But Sabine is made of strong stuff; her honesty and compassion help her to overcome both the challenges of her newfound popularity, and an unspeakable tragedy from her past, to win the favour of the Sun King and the heart of Le Notre.’

A UK release is set for April 17th, 2015. [Read more…]

A Promise Trailer – Alan Rickman & Richard Madden want Rebecca Hall

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

It’s Harry Potter meets Game Of Thrones, with Alan Rickman and Richard Madden starring in A Promise, alongside Rebecca Hall. Now a trailer has arrived, which is in English with French subtitles.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in pre-First World War Germany, Patrice Leconte’s venture into English-language filmmaking chronicles the simmering love triangle between an ailing factory owner (Alan Rickman), his young bride (Rebecca Hall) and his protégé (Richard Madden).

‘Stefan Zweig’s novel Journey into the Past, set in pre-First World War Germany, provides the inspiration for Patrice Leconte’s venture into English-language production. Employing his by-now familiar style, Leconte, a master of the unexpected, finds a simmering romance within the pages of Zweig’s book, and uses its slow heat to powerful effect. But A Promise is no bodice-ripper. It is an elegantly directed, keenly modulated love story.

‘Hoffmeister (Alan Rickman) is an ailing factory owner, whiskered and respectable. As his energies flag, he looks to a sharp young man in his employ for help. Ludwig (Richard Madden) impresses Hoffmeister with his reliability and youthful spirit, and the older man finds himself leaning more and more on this promising up-and-comer. At the same time, Hoffmeister’s young bride (Rebecca Hall) is looking for a tutor for their child, and Ludwig proves both flexible and willing. When he moves into their home, an emotional triangle develops. Societal dignity and decorum must be respected, and it is. Nevertheless, heated passions come into play, while Hoffmeister looks on.

‘Unravelling over many years, this tale extends well beyond its set-up, and Leconte moves us through the emotional maze, making us aware of the complexities of feeling amongst all of the players. Beautifully supported by three fine actors, A Promise delivers on its premise. Love can take many forms before it either blooms or fades. Beneath those starched shirts and lacy blouses, feelings of respect and care rub up against those of lust and desire.’

The film should be out later this year. [Read more…]

CBGB Trailer – Alan Rickman leads a great cast in a biopic of the legendary club

August 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Randall Miller has pulled together a great cast for CBGB, with the likes of Alan Rickman, Rupert Grint, Malin Akerman, Ashley Greene, Kerry Bishé, Johnny Galecki, Donal Logue, Ryan Hurst, Justin Bartha and Bradley Whitford and quite a few more.

The movie is about the famed (and now sadly closed) CBGB punk rock club in New York City, following Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman), who wants to start a club for country, bluegrass and blues (the CBGB of the club’s name) but found it difficult to get acts, and so ended up allowing the likes of The Ramones and Blondie to play, helping give punk a foothold in America.

Along with Rickman, Ashley Greene plays his daughter, while Joel David Moore, Julian Acosta and Steven Schub are three of the Ramones; Malin Akerman is Debbie Harry; Mickey Sumner is Patti Smith; Rupert Grint will be Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome; and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is Iggy Pop. And that’s only a few of the actors taking on classic punk acts.

The film should be out later this year. [Read more…]

Gambit Trailer – Firth, Diaz & Rickman star in the Coen Brothers scripted film

September 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gambit has been in the works for a long time, with the Coen Brothers intially thinking of directing this remake of a 1960s Shirley Maclaine and Micheal Caine movie. However after delays due to financing, they handed the directing reigns to Michael Hoffman, although Joel and Ethan did provide the script. Now we have the trailer, which gives us out first taste of the movie.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Private art curator Harry Deane (Colin Firth) devises a finely-crafted scheme to con England’s richest man and avid art collector, Lionel Shabandar, (Alan Rickman) into purchasing a fake Monet painting. In order to bait his buyer, he recruits a Texas rodeo queen (Cameron Diaz) to cross the pond and pose as a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII.

‘BAFTA award winner Sir Tom Courtenay, Golden Globe winner Stanley Tucci and Academy Award© winner and veteran comedienne Cloris Leachman round out the cast.’ The movie hits UK cinemas on November 21st.
