Epic (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Colin Farrell, Beyonce Knowles, Chris O'Dowd
Director: Chris Wedge
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: October 7th 2013

I have to admit that the trailers for Epic left me cold. The title seemed random, the story silly and the whole thing felt like an attempt to cash in on Avatar for the family audience. Well, there is a little of the eco theme and visual style of Avatar in there, but I have to say how surprised I was by the film, which is far more entertaining than I’d expected (even if it is a bit silly).

In the film the forests are full of two-inch tall creatures, split between the good, peace loving Treemen and their allies, and the evil Boggans, who want to destroy everything and turn the forest into rot. An eccentric human scientist believes in these creatures, but his singular obsession has left him without a wife and estranged from his daughter, M.K. (Amanda Seyfried). [Read more…]

Man Of Steel Takes The June Record At The US Box Office

June 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

man-of-steel-promo-pic1Warner/DC executives must have been nervous in the last few weeks, as they’d spent over $225 million on Man Of Steel, with the hope it would kick off an entire DC universe. They’ll be breathing a sigh on release as the movie has taken $125 million in its first four days, which is a June record at the US box office.

It added another $71 million internationally, from only 24 other territories. Warner has been lacking major franchises since Harry Potter drew to a close, so it’s certainly good news for the studio.

This Is The End came second, taking $20.5 million over the weekend and $32.8 million since it opened last Wednesday. It’s certainly not a exceptional start, but it’s not bad on a weekend when it was up against Superman, and the modestly budgeted film should end up as a minor hit.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of June 14th-16th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Man Of Steel $113.0 $125.0
2 This Is The End $20.5 $32.8
3 Now You See Me $10.3 $80.0
4 Fast & Furious 6 $9.4 $219.5
5 The Purge $8,2 $51.8
6 The Internship $7.0 $30.9
7 Epic $6.0 $95.4

The Purge Tops The US Box Office, With The Internship Disappointing

June 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-purge-posterBox office watchers had been expecting The Internship to disappoint at the box office due to soft tracking, but few had thought The Purge would do as well as it did. While there were already rumbling it might have a chance of topping the box office, in the end it not only took the number one spot but did so with style, taking $36 million.

That’s particularly impressive considering it only cost $3 million to make. It’s also a record for an original R-rated movie, overtaking last year’s The Devil Inside.

In the end The Internship could only make it to the number 4 slot, taking $18.1 million. That’s actually ahead on some people’s expectations, but still a disappointment for a $60 million movie that many had expected to hit it big, especially with the Wedding Crashers reteaming of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

This weekend also saw Fast & Furious 6 and Star Trek Into Darkness pass the $200 million mark, while The Hangover Part III passed $100 million.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of June 7th-9th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Purge $36.3 $36.3
2 Fast & Furious 6 $19.7 $202.9
3 Now You See Me $19.5 $61.3
4 The Internship $18.1 $18.1
5 Epic $12.1 $84.1
6 Star Trek Into Darkness $11.7 $200.1
7 After Earth $11.2 $46.5
8 The Hangover Part III $7.3 $102.3
9 Iron Man 3 $5.7 $394.3

Now You See Me Beats After Earth At The US Box Office

June 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Now-You-See-Me-PosterUS audiences couldn’t get enough of movies over the Memorial Day holiday, but the box office came down to earth with a bump this weekend. While Fast & Furious 6 held onto the number 1 spot, it dropped nearly 65% from its opening to take $34.5 million. The Hangover Part II also dropped 60% in its second weekend, with $15.9 million and a sixth place finish.

The new openers saw one film exceed expectations and another severely disappoint them. The magician-themed Now You See Me placed second with $28 million, way ahead of what many had expected, particularly when cinemas are crowded in big summer action fare. However audiences seemed to like the idea, giving it a far better start than most had thought.

M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth meanwhile massive underperformed with $27 million. That’s in between the openings of box office bombs Battleship and John Carter, which doesn’t bode well for a movie that cost over $130 million to make. Even the presence of Will Smith, who’s normally a solid draw, could get enough people to part with their cash to put this on the way to being profitable.

There was one more new entry, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which placed ninth with $1.65 million. It’s rare for a Bollywood movie to make the box office top 10 in the US, so this one has done exceptionally well.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 31st-June 2nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Fast & Furious 6 $34.5 $170.3
2 Now You See Me $28.0 $28.0
3 After Earth $27.0 $27.0
4 Star Trek Into Darkness $16.4 $181.1
5 Epic $16.4 $65.1
6 The Hangover Part III $15.9 $88.0
7 Iron Man 3 $8.0 $384.7
8 The Great Gatsby $6,2 $128.2
9 Yei Jawaani Hai Deewani $1.6 $1.6

Fast & Furious 6 Takes $120 Million To Top The Memorial Day Box Office

May 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fast-and-furious-6-poster3Heading into the Memorial Day weekend, many box office watchers thought it would be a close race between Hangover Part III and Fast & Furious 6 as to who would come out on top. In the end, it’s the latter that streaked away, with $120 million in its first four days in US cinemas.

That’s not just the biggest start ever for the franchise, but the biggest opening in the history of Universal Studios, overtaking the $97 million Jurassic Park: The Lost World made back in the 90s. It’s certainly an impressive haul, especially for a franchise that only became a powerhouse with the last few entries.

In the end Hangover Part III slightly faltered with $63 million since its opening last Thursday. While that’s not bad at all for an R-rated comedy, it’s far below expectations, as Part II opened above $100 million in 2011. The film will still make a profit, but it’ll struggle to get close to the $586 million worldwide total of the previous Hangover movie.

The final new entry is the Fox toon Epic, which took $42.6 million. While that was only enough for fourth place (behind a strong second weekend showing for Star Trek Into Darkness), it’s more than many had expected. And with the next few weekends clear of new animated releases, it could continue to do well.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the four-day Memorial Weekend.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Fast & Furious 6 $120.0 $120.0
2 The Hangover Part III $51.2 $63.0
3 Star Trek Into Darkness $47.0 $155.8
4 Epic $42.6 $42.6
5 Iron Man 3 $24.3 $372.4
6 The Great Gatsby $17.0 $117.7
7 Mud $2.4 $15.0
8 The Croods $1.6 $179.6
9 42 $1.6 $91.4

New Epic Trailer – Into an animated miniature world

March 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The creators of Ice Age and Rio return on May 24th with Epic, which looks like it should be pretty fun, even if it won’t please anti-environmentalist nutjobs. It’s certainly got a great voice cast, including Amanda Seyfried, Beyonce Knowles, Josh Hutcherson, Beyonce, Colin Farrell and more.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The creators of ICE AGE and RIO will reveal a hidden world unlike any other in an all new 3D CG action-adventure comedy. EPIC tells the story of a battle raging all around us between the forces of good, who protect nature, and the forces of evil, who wish to see it destroyed. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and unique characters to save their world…and ours. EPIC is released in cinemas May 2013 from Twentieth Century Fox.’

New Epic Trailer – Don’t destroy the forest in the new animated movie

November 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I can already feel the hackles of right wing anti-environmentalist nutjobs rising as Epic, which certainly suggest we should be nice to the natural world and not indiscriminately destroy it. However I’d imagine this trailer will excite fans of Honey I Shrunk The Kids.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The creators of ICE AGE and RIO will reveal a hidden world unlike any other in an all new 3D CG action-adventure comedy. It’s certainly looks like’s it’s going to be a gorgeous looking movie, with a less overtly comedy vibe than most of Fox’s animation output.

The director of Ice Age, Chris Wedge, is heading in a much warmer direction with the luscious looking CG-animated movie Epic. The first trailer for the movie has now hit, which shows off its intricate forest setting and great looking visuals. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world…and ours. The voice cast includes Beyonce Knowles, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Jason Sudeikis and Johnny Knoxville. It’s due out May, 2013.

Beyonce, Josh Hutcherson & Colin Farrell Get Epic

June 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

20th Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios have had a good run with the likes of the Ice Age films, Horton Hears A Who and Rio, and now they’re hoping to continue that with Epic.

They seem to be hoping that a big name cast will help the animated flick, as Colin Farrell, Beyoncé Knowles, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Knoxville, Aziz Ansari, Pitbull, Jason Sudeikis, Judah Friedlander and Steven Tyler all all onboard the movie.

Epic is about an ongoing battle that takes place deep in the forest between the forces of good and the forces of evil. When a teenage girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world…and ours.

It’s unlikely to be as easy a sell as most of Blue Sky’s earlier film, which may be why they’re so keen on a well-known cast. Ice Age and Robots helmer Chris Wedge will direct, with a 2014 release scheduled.
