Robert Rodriguez May Direct The Remake Of Escape From New York

March 25, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For several years, Hollywood has been talking about remaking John Carpenter’s 1981 classic, Escape From New York. A couple of time it got to the point of casting, before it was called off and plans were put on the back burner.

Now though it’s been given new life, with the news that Robert Rodriguez is in talks to helm a new take on the movie, according to THR. He follows in the footsteps of the likes of Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner and Breck Eisner, who have previously tried get it off the ground.

The original starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a one-eyed convict in a future where New York has been turned into a maximum-security prison for the most dangerous criminals. Snake is tasked with rescuing the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence), who is being held captive by a dangerous inmate (Isaac Hayes) after his plane crashes into the city.

Neil Cross (Lucifer) wrote the most recent version of the remake script. John Carpenter is executive producing the project, which 20th Century Fox is hoping will be the launchpad for a major franchise. The hope is to start shooting towards the end of the year.

Jason Statham & Tom Hardy Rumoured For Escape From New York Remake Lead

March 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-statham-crankWe’d take this a speculative rumour at the moment, but The New York Daily News is reporting that with Joel Silver and Studio Canal recently revealing they’re teaming up for another crack at putting together a remake of Escape From New York, they’re looking at casting either Jason Statham or Tom Hardy in the lead role of Snake Plissken.

The paper’s source, who’s described as a Hollywood insider close to the film’s producers,  says the studio believes that Statham “has the physical attributes and screen presence to reprise Snake”, while Hardy’s turn in The Dark Knight Rises was impressive enough to get consideration. However it doesn’t sound like either actor has been approached, so they may not be interested. Either way, the remake is hoping to get its Plissken cast by the end of the summer.

There’s no director attached to the film yet – which is being planned as a trilogy that will take into account Snake’s origins – and it’s not clear when it might shoot.

Escape From New York Reboot Gets New Life

March 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Escape-from-New-YorkA couple of years ago there was a lot of talk about a remake of Escape From New York, which even got as far as a fairly detailed plot synopsis and concept art being released, with Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, and Jeremy Renner circling the Snake Plissken and Breck Eisner directing. However the movie fell apart of budget and script problems, but now Joel Silver is starting over as he still thinks it’s a good idea to remake the John Carpenter movie (although many other would disagree).

EW reports that Silver is teaming up with Studiocanal for the film, which will give an entirely new take on the plot. There’s little info on exactly what that new take is, although it’s said it feature origin elements looking at what happened before Escape From New York, and is being developed with a trilogy in mind.

The remake is currently at a fairly early stage, so don’t expect to see it anytime soon.
