New Alita: Battle Angel Trailer – James Cameron’s Manga-inspired passion-project is on its way

July 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a long time, James Cameron has been talking about making Alita: Battle Angel (or Battle Angel: Alita as it used to be called) but various other projects have gotten in the way. When he decided to concentrate on the world of Avatar, he gave up in directing Alita himself and passed the reins to Robert Rodriguez.

The new trailer for the movie has now arrived, which takes us into the uncanny valley with a title character who looks like she’s trapped in a Snapchat big-eye filter. It’s a bit eerie initially, but very memorable, and certainly helps tie it to its manga inspiration. It could be a spectacular one.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY), comes ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.’

Take a look at the new trailer below. The film is due in cinemas in December. [Read more…]

Alita: Battle Angel Trailer – James Cameron’s Manga-inspired passion-project is coming soon

December 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a long time, James Cameron has been talking about making Alita: Battle Angel (or Battle Angel: Alita as it used to be called) but various other projects have gotten in the way. When he decided to concentrate on the world of Avatar, he gave up in directing Alita himself and passed the reins to Robert Rodriguez.

The first trailer for the movie has now arrived, which takes us into the uncanny valley with a title character who looks like she’s trapped in a Snapchat big-eye filter. It’s a bif eerie initially, but certainly memorable, and certainly helps tie it to its manga inspiration.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) create a groundbreaking new heroine in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment. Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.’

Robert Rodriguez May Direct The Remake Of Escape From New York

March 25, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For several years, Hollywood has been talking about remaking John Carpenter’s 1981 classic, Escape From New York. A couple of time it got to the point of casting, before it was called off and plans were put on the back burner.

Now though it’s been given new life, with the news that Robert Rodriguez is in talks to helm a new take on the movie, according to THR. He follows in the footsteps of the likes of Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner and Breck Eisner, who have previously tried get it off the ground.

The original starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a one-eyed convict in a future where New York has been turned into a maximum-security prison for the most dangerous criminals. Snake is tasked with rescuing the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence), who is being held captive by a dangerous inmate (Isaac Hayes) after his plane crashes into the city.

Neil Cross (Lucifer) wrote the most recent version of the remake script. John Carpenter is executive producing the project, which 20th Century Fox is hoping will be the launchpad for a major franchise. The hope is to start shooting towards the end of the year.

Ed Skrein Joining James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel

September 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ed-skrein-slideJames Cameron may still be busy working on the sequels to Avatar, but he’s also finding the time to bring one of his other longtime projects to the big screen, Alita: Battle Angel. He won’t be directing, as that job’s gone to Robert Rodriguez, but as producer Cameron will be able to ensure the movie will get made after well over a decade in the works.

Casting has begun, with the latest to join being Deadpool villain Ed Skrein, according to Variety. Assuming his deal goes through, the British actor will be one of the movies villains.

The film itself is about ‘a 26th century cyborg who’s rescued from a scrapyard and reassembled. Her character, Alita, who only remembers her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior who tracks down vicious criminals.’

Rosa Salazar will play the cyborg, with Jackie Earle Haley and Christoph Waltz also starring. The movie is set for release July 2018, with Fox betting big on it, by giving it a $200 million budget.

Robert Rodriguez Takes On James Cameron’s Battle Angel Alita

October 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert-RodriguezFor over 15 years James Cameron has been talking about making Battle Angel Alita. He was going to make it before Avatar, and then he promised it would be his follow-up, but then his commitment to Avatar 2 & 3 pushed it back. He still said it was coming though, although not for a long time.

Now though he’s decided that as he’ll be in Avatar-land for several more years, he’s going to hand the directing reins to someone else, with THR reporting that Robert Rodriguez is in talks to take the film on.

Battle Angel is a Manga adaptation about a damaged female cyborg who is revived but has no memories. Once rebuilt, she discovers she has instinctive knowledge of martial arts and sets out to discover more about her past, which takes her into a world of brutal sports and organised crime.

Cameron comments, “Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel. “He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”

Rodriguez adds, “Battle Angel is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron’s spectacular, character-driven films. Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. It’s an honor to explore the world of Alita along with Jim and Jon, whose films have impacted me for decades.”

Cameron will still produce, alongside his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau

Robert Rodriguez Plans Live Action Jonny Quest Movie

May 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jonny-quest-originalA few years ago the news that Robert Rodriguez was taking on a movie would be reason for excitement, but we’ve had a few too many Sharkboy And Lavagirls, and Sin City: A Dame To Kill Fors, for it to mean the same as it once did.

Nevertheless THR reports that Rodriguez has signed up to helm Warner Bros’ live-action Jonny Quest movie. You can see why he’d appeal to the studio, as Rodriguez offers a full service, as he owns his own studios and visual effects company, allowing him to make movies much cheaper than comparable companies. As Warner don’t want to spend the earth on Jonny, it makes sense.

Jonny has had several incarnations over the year, but all follow the young title character, who goes on a series of incredible, action-filled adventures with his father. For several year there have been attempts to take the character live-action, but they have all stalled. Perhaps this one will have more luck.

New Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For Poster Shows Off Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Co.

June 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sin-City-2-quad-PosterWith the marketing for Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For it really does seem that they’re trying to suggest that if you liked the first one you’ll be getting more of the same for the second. Indeed if you didn’t read the full title, you could easily think this was a poster for the first movie – except this time the comic book noir world will be in 3D.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it did give us a sense of deja vu.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Nine years after the box-office smash SIN CITY, the stories of the notorious city dwellers resume in the hugely anticipated sequel SIN CITY 2: A DAME TO KILL FOR. Boasting an all-star cast led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises), Eva Green (Dark Shadows), Juno Temple (Killer Joe), Jessica Alba (Sin City, Fantastic Four), Bruce Willis (Looper) and Josh Brolin (Old Boy), this next installment promises to take audiences on a visceral ride into the twisted minds of Frank Miller’s unforgettable characters.

‘Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller’s visually stunning “Sin City” graphic novels back to the screen in SIN CITY 2: A DAME TO KILL FOR. Weaving together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales, the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. SIN CITY 2: A DAME TO KILL FOR is the follow-up to Rodriguez and Miller’s 2005 ground-breaking film, FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY.’

The film’s due to hit UK cinemas on 25th August 2014 (which oddly enough is a Monday).
