Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters Takes US Box Office Crown

January 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hansel-Gretel-witch-hunters-poster2The Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton starrer, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, has topped the US box office on its first weekend of release, taking $19 million. While it came in number one, many are still seeing the grown-up fairytale as an underperformer, as most had expected an opening in the $20 million range.

The other new openers did much worse though. The Jason Statham starrer Parker placed fifth with $7 million, which isn’t amazing but is about on par with most of the actor’s recent US opening (barring The Expendables movies).

And despite its incredibly starry cast, the anthology comedy Movie 43 tanked with just $5 million to place seventh. It also been receiving atrocious word of mouth, so it’s unlikely this going to be a sleeper.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 25th-27th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters $19.0 $19.0
2 Mama $12.8 $47.6
3 Silver Linings Playbook $10.0 $69.4
4 Zero Dark Thirty $9.8 $69.9
5 Parker $7.0 $7.0
6 Django Unchained $5.0 $146.2
7 Movie 43 $5.0 $5.0
8 Gangster Squad $4.2 $39.6

Mama Tops The US Box Office, With Arnie’s Last Stand Sinking

January 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mama-poster-largeWhile many had tipped Zero Dark Thirty to top the US box office again, the Guillermo Del Toro produced horror, Mama, outpaced expectations to easily win the the weekend with $28.1 million in its first three days. Some had even predicted disaster for Mama, but in the end it gave Jessica Chastain a double whammy, as she stars in both the number one and two movies, Mama and Zero Dark Thirty.

Despite the presence of Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta Jones, Broken City could only make it to 5th spot with $9.0 million, far less than the makers would have hoped, even if January has become a bit of a dumping ground for studio product that they don’t have much hope for.

The final new entry was also the biggest disappointment. Many had high hopes for Arnie’s return to leading action man status, The Last Stand, but in the end it could only gross $6.3 and place tenth on the chart on its opening weekend. It’ll certainly be a disappointment for Schwarzenegger, who was hoping to come back with a bang.

However the biggest winner this weekend was Silver Linings Playbook, which thanks to its Oscar nomination added 1,700 screens and rose up to third place on the chart. It had its biggest weekend yet of $11.3 million on its tenth week of release.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 18th-20th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Mama $28.1 $28.1
2 Zero Dark Thirty $17.6 $55.9
3 Silver Linings Playbook $11.3 $55.3
4 Gangster Squad $9.1 $32.2
5 Broken City $9.0 $9.0
6 A Haunted House $8.3 $29.9
7 Django Unchained $8.2 $138.3
8 Les Miserables $7.8 $130.3
9 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $6.4 $287.3
10 The Last Stand $6.3 $6.3

Zero Dark Thirty Tops The US Box Office, With A Haunted House & Gangster Squad The Runners Up

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zero-dark-thirty-posterIn its first week of wide release, Zero Dark Thirty has topped the US Box Office chart, taking $24 million as it expanded onto over 2,800 screens from just over a hundred. Its success came as a surprise to many, who’d expected Gangster Squad to top the chart.

In the end the gangster noir placed third with $16.7 million, which isn’t a bad start, but probably not what Warner was hoping for its star studded movie, which has had a lot of buzz ever since the screenplay first started doing the rounds in Hollywood.

Proving spoof horror can still find an audience, the Marlon Wayans starring A Haunted House placed second on the chart with $18.8 million.

Those were the only new entries on the chart, but a couple films got a bump from the Oscar nominations, with Lincoln rising 16% from the previous weekend to take its US takings across the $150 million mark. Silver Linings Playbook also got a 38% bump to return to the top 10, thanks to its eight Oscar nominations.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 11th-13th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Zero Dark Thirty $24.0 $29.4
2 A Haunted House $18.8 $18.8
3 Gangster Squad $16.7 $16.7
4 Django Unchained $11.0 $125.3
5 Les Miserables $10.1 $119.2

Five Gangster Squad Character Posters Emerge

October 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With a new poster and trailer out this week, the hype campaign for Gangster Squad has continued with the release of five characters posters for the movie, which you can see above and below. We have a suspicion they may have been hanging around for a while, as they still have the old September release date on them, before it was shifted back to January, so they could film a new ending that wouldn’t remind people of the Dark Knight Rises shootings in Colorado. They’re new to use though, and pretty cool, so enjoy!

And if you want to know more about the film, check out the latest trailer here.

New Gangster Squad Trailer – Ryan Gosling and co. take on the mobsters

October 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The release of Gangster Squad was thrown into disarray after the Aurora Dark Knight Rises shootings, as one of the main scenes towards the end saw gangsters opening fire in a cinema. The result was the release got pushed back to January and major reshoots were needed to add a new ending. Now the promotion of the movie is gearing up again, with a new poster and a great new trailer. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and – if he has his way – every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. Gangster Squad is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.’ The movie hits cinemas January 11th.

First Image From The Gangster Squad

December 10, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

There’s been a huge amount of interest in Hollywood in Gangster Squad ever since the script first started doing the rounds. It had a few problems securing a director, but then Ruben Fleishcher came onboard and a great cast was secured including Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Anthony Mackie, Nick Nolte, Michael Pena, and Giovanni Ribisi.

Now the first image from the movie has arrived via EW. Here’s what Fleischer had to say about the movie, “We’ve taken some creative license but tried to stay true to the original story and characters as much as possible. O’Mara (Josh Brolin), our lead character, has just come back from fighting the Nazis with all these ideals after seeing America at its greatest. And he’s come home and there’s a gangster running his city. While he was gone, Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) took over and he turned the streets of L.A. into a battle zone. In our story, O’ Mara takes the lead of the Gangster Squad, a vigilante police force that fights the gangsters on their own terms, and the battle between them is for the future of Los Angeles: whether it’s going to become corrupt and run by this bunch of gangsters or these guys who fought for these values and want L.A. to be the shining beacon on the west coast that it was always intended to be.

“Ryan’s character also went to war, but when he came back, he was a little disillusioned. So he’s more on the fence, hanging out in nightclubs and hanging out with guys who might be gangsters. He’s less clear on where he stands in terms of standing up against Mickey Cohen.”
