A Walk In The Woods Trailer – Robert Redford and Nick Nolte go hiking

May 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

a-walk-in-the-woods-film-posterRobert Redford’s quest to get Bill Bryson’s wonderful memoir A Walk In The Woods on the screen has been going on for so long that it was originally envisioned as a way to get him to reteam with Paul Newman (and seeing as the screen legend died in 2008, it really has been a long time).

Now though Redford has managed it, starring alongside Nick Nolte, Mary Steenburgen, Kristen Schaal and Emma Thompson, with Ken Kwapis directing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson (Redford), instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Emma Thompson), and large and happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail – 2,200 miles of America’s most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek – his long lost and former friend Katz (Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who, after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law – sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before its too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word “adventure”. Now they’re about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins. A Walk in the Woods also co-stars Nick Offerman (22 Jump Street), Kristen Schaal (“The Last Man on Earth”) and Mary Steenburgen (Last Vegas).’

It’s a great book and will hopefully make just as good a film.

The film’s due out in September. [Read more…]

Emma Thompson & Nick Offerman Off For A Walk In The Woods With Robert Redford

May 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Emma-ThompsonAfter years and years in development (it was originally planned as a reunion between Robert Redford and Paul Newman) it’s been announced that A Walk in the Woods has finally started shooting.

Along with that comes news of a few casting additions, including Nick Offerman, Kristen Schaal and Emma Thompson, who join the previously cast Redford and Nick Nolte.

The film is based on Bill Bryson’s best-selling memoir, which follows him (Redford) as he decides to hike the 2000-mile Appalachian Trail. Not wanting to go alone, he almost accidentally teams up with his long estranged high school buddy (Nolte) – a man who’s barely walked anywhere in his life. Along the way, the duo face off with each other, nature and an eccentric assortment of characters.

Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You) is directing. He commented, “Bryson’s book is the ne plus ultra of travel memoirs. It’s also laugh-out-loud funny, and what excites me is giving two legendary dramatic actors the chance to flex their comedic muscles.”

Nick Nolte Is A Late Addition To Darren Aronofsky’s Noah

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nick-nolteYou’d think that with only two and a half months until the release, it would be a little late for Darren Aronofsky to be adding new actors to Noah. However he’s tweeted, ‘just added the legend nick nolte as the watcher samyaza in #noah . long live the nephilim! it was an honor.’

The reason he can come in so late is that Samyaza will be a largely CGI creation, so Nolte will presumably be providing the voice.

The ‘nephilim’ are mentioned in The Bible in Genesis 6:4 where they are described as “sons of God” and “daughters of men.” This has led some to say that they were the offspring of angels/demons and people, although Aronofky’s film takes the other interpretation of them, with Samyaza the leader of the Grigori, a.k.a. Watchers, angels who fell from grace after they were consumed by lust for mortal women.

The film will apparently also follow the legend that the nephilim are giants, and it’s believed Samyaza will have six arms. The nephilim/grigori are an interesting part of Jewish/Christian mysticism that has a long, rich history, but is rarely mentioned today. Mark Margolis was previously linked to the role, although it may be he did the motion capture while Nolte will be the voice. The film is out in March.

Richard Linklater Going For A Walk In The Woods With Robert Redford & Nick Nolte

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

richard-linklaterRobert Redford has been attached to an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s A Walk In The Wood for a long time. Originally it was going to reteam him with Paul Newman, but Paul’s ill health and eventual death prevented that. For a while Nick Nolte has been attached to Newman’s role and now Richard Linklater has signed up to direct, according to the LA Times.

Chris Columbus and Barry Levinson have previously been attached to helm the movie, but hopefully it will actually be able to move forward with Linklater. The project is based on the popular travel memoir by Bill Bryson, who returned home to America after spending over 20 years in England and decided to hike the Appalachian Trail. He did it with an old friend, who was a former drug addict who wasn’t prepared for the arduous trek. The journey forced both men to confront their lives and the realities of aging. Robert Redford will play Bill Bryson, with Nick Nolte portraying his friend, Stephen Katz.

Richard Russo wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, which was supervised by Robert Redford, who is also producing. Redford commented, “A Walk in the Woods is the kind of movie that has something to say but can also be really commercial because it’s just so funny. It will be nice to get back to doing a comedy.”

Shooting will begin later this autumn.

Glenn Close & Nick Nolte Up For The Musical Always On My Mind

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We don’t see as much of Glenn Close as we should, perhaps because she doesn’t play the sort of wife and mother roles many actresses her age get shoved into, instead hanging on for parts that are a bit more interesting. Now Variety reports that Close and Nick Nolte have signed up to star in the music-driven drama Always On My Mind for writer-director Chris D’Arienzo.

The movie is about an aging rock star (Nick Nolte) who passes away after his battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Glenn Close is set to play his wife, who’s desperately trying to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of his death. It’s not Close’s first brush with musicals, as she found much acclaim playing the lead on stage in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard.

Chris D’Arienzo meanwhile is the man behind the original Broadway version of Rock of Ages, which was nominated for five Tony Awards during its first year on Broadway. The musical was recently adapted for the screen by Adam Shankman. D’Arienzo does have film experience though, most recently writing and directing the comedy Barry Munday, starring Patrick Wilson and Judy Greer.

Gorgeous New Gangster Squad Banner Debuts

July 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are high hopes for Gangster Squad, the upcoming Ruben Fleischer movie which takes on the real-life story of LAPD’s fight to keep East Coast Mafia types out of Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s. The film has an amazing cast, including Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte and Anthony Mackie. The new banner above is gorgeous, recalling the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and – if he has his way – every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. Gangster Squad is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.’

The film hits UK cinemas on November 9th.

First Image From The Gangster Squad

December 10, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

There’s been a huge amount of interest in Hollywood in Gangster Squad ever since the script first started doing the rounds. It had a few problems securing a director, but then Ruben Fleishcher came onboard and a great cast was secured including Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Anthony Mackie, Nick Nolte, Michael Pena, and Giovanni Ribisi.

Now the first image from the movie has arrived via EW. Here’s what Fleischer had to say about the movie, “We’ve taken some creative license but tried to stay true to the original story and characters as much as possible. O’Mara (Josh Brolin), our lead character, has just come back from fighting the Nazis with all these ideals after seeing America at its greatest. And he’s come home and there’s a gangster running his city. While he was gone, Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) took over and he turned the streets of L.A. into a battle zone. In our story, O’ Mara takes the lead of the Gangster Squad, a vigilante police force that fights the gangsters on their own terms, and the battle between them is for the future of Los Angeles: whether it’s going to become corrupt and run by this bunch of gangsters or these guys who fought for these values and want L.A. to be the shining beacon on the west coast that it was always intended to be.

“Ryan’s character also went to war, but when he came back, he was a little disillusioned. So he’s more on the fence, hanging out in nightclubs and hanging out with guys who might be gangsters. He’s less clear on where he stands in terms of standing up against Mickey Cohen.”

Anna Kendrick Finds The Company You Keep

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Director Robert Redford is certainly filling out the cast for his upcoming political thriller The Company You Keep, with Variety reporting that the increasingly impressive ensemble now includes Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Elliott, and newcomer Jackie Evancho, an 11-year-old finalist on America’s Got Talent. They join Robert Redford, Shia LaBeouf, Brit Marling, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon, Richard Jenkins, Julie Christie, Stephen Root, Stanley Tucci and Chris Cooper in the Lem Dobbs-scripted pic, based on the novel by Neil Gordon.

Robert Redford stars as Jim Grant, a former Weather Underground militant wanted by the FBI for 30 years, who must go on the run when a young, ambitious reporter (Shia LaBeouf) exposes his true identity. Anna Kendrick will play Diana, a young FBI agent and Shia LaBeouf’s former flame, who provides him with that information he needs to uncover the truth about Grant and a Bank of Michigan robbery.

Terrence Howard will play Cornelius, the senior FBI agent on the case who has relentlessly pursued Grant across the nation and now leads the task force assigned to take down the Weather Underground fugitives who have been on the run for three decades. Brendan Gleeson will play Henry Osborne, the retired Michigan Chief of Police who investigated the bank robbery in the 1960s, while Sam Elliott will be Mac, Julie Christie’s employer in the marijuana trade who used to be romantically involved with her. Jackie Evancho will play Robert Redford’s daughter, who recently lost her mother and is unaware of her father’s militant past.

It’s an incredible cast for what should be a very intriguing movie. The political action thriller is currently filming in Vancouver.
