A Walk In The Woods Trailer – Robert Redford and Nick Nolte go hiking

May 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

a-walk-in-the-woods-film-posterRobert Redford’s quest to get Bill Bryson’s wonderful memoir A Walk In The Woods on the screen has been going on for so long that it was originally envisioned as a way to get him to reteam with Paul Newman (and seeing as the screen legend died in 2008, it really has been a long time).

Now though Redford has managed it, starring alongside Nick Nolte, Mary Steenburgen, Kristen Schaal and Emma Thompson, with Ken Kwapis directing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson (Redford), instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Emma Thompson), and large and happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail – 2,200 miles of America’s most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek – his long lost and former friend Katz (Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who, after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law – sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before its too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word “adventure”. Now they’re about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins. A Walk in the Woods also co-stars Nick Offerman (22 Jump Street), Kristen Schaal (“The Last Man on Earth”) and Mary Steenburgen (Last Vegas).’

It’s a great book and will hopefully make just as good a film.

The film’s due out in September. [Read more…]

Emma Thompson & Nick Offerman Off For A Walk In The Woods With Robert Redford

May 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Emma-ThompsonAfter years and years in development (it was originally planned as a reunion between Robert Redford and Paul Newman) it’s been announced that A Walk in the Woods has finally started shooting.

Along with that comes news of a few casting additions, including Nick Offerman, Kristen Schaal and Emma Thompson, who join the previously cast Redford and Nick Nolte.

The film is based on Bill Bryson’s best-selling memoir, which follows him (Redford) as he decides to hike the 2000-mile Appalachian Trail. Not wanting to go alone, he almost accidentally teams up with his long estranged high school buddy (Nolte) – a man who’s barely walked anywhere in his life. Along the way, the duo face off with each other, nature and an eccentric assortment of characters.

Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You) is directing. He commented, “Bryson’s book is the ne plus ultra of travel memoirs. It’s also laugh-out-loud funny, and what excites me is giving two legendary dramatic actors the chance to flex their comedic muscles.”

Richard Linklater Going For A Walk In The Woods With Robert Redford & Nick Nolte

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

richard-linklaterRobert Redford has been attached to an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s A Walk In The Wood for a long time. Originally it was going to reteam him with Paul Newman, but Paul’s ill health and eventual death prevented that. For a while Nick Nolte has been attached to Newman’s role and now Richard Linklater has signed up to direct, according to the LA Times.

Chris Columbus and Barry Levinson have previously been attached to helm the movie, but hopefully it will actually be able to move forward with Linklater. The project is based on the popular travel memoir by Bill Bryson, who returned home to America after spending over 20 years in England and decided to hike the Appalachian Trail. He did it with an old friend, who was a former drug addict who wasn’t prepared for the arduous trek. The journey forced both men to confront their lives and the realities of aging. Robert Redford will play Bill Bryson, with Nick Nolte portraying his friend, Stephen Katz.

Richard Russo wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, which was supervised by Robert Redford, who is also producing. Redford commented, “A Walk in the Woods is the kind of movie that has something to say but can also be really commercial because it’s just so funny. It will be nice to get back to doing a comedy.”

Shooting will begin later this autumn.
