In the modern world there are all sorts of non-traditional families. Gayby takes a look at what happens when a straight woman and her gay best friend decide to have a baby together.

Jenn (Jenn Harris) and Matt (Matthew Wilkas) have been friends for years. In their youth they made a pact that if it hadn’t happened for either of them, they’d have a child together. Now in their 30s and with both of them single, Jenn decides to hold Matt to his promise. Keen to have a child of his own, he agrees. However there is one proviso – Jenn wants to have conceive the natural way, without turkey basters or any other equipment than what Matt has attached to him already. [Read more…]

GALECA (Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association) Announce Award Nominees

The BAFTA award nominees were announced this morning and the Oscars reveal their shortlist tomorrow, but now it’s time for a list that’s much closer to our hearts (not least because I’m a member), as GALECA – the Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association – has announced the nominees for their Dorian Awards.

This year GALECA has put Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Keep the Lights On, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Moonrise Kingdom up for its Best Picture Award, while Any Day Now, Cloud Atlas, Gayby, Keep the Lights On and The Perks of Being a Wallflower are up for LGBT Film Of The Year.

Keeping things fresh GALECA also has some more unusual categories, such as Unsing Film Of The Year (Bernie, The Cabin in the Woods, Chronicle, Holy Motors, Looper and Your Sister’s Sister), and Campy Film Of The Year (2016: Obama’s America, Cloud Atlas, Magic Mike, The Paperboy, Pitch Perfect, Rock of Ages), which goes to an OTT movie rather than something deliberately trying to be camp.

Sir Ian McKellan will also be honoured with the Timeless Award, ‘honoring an actor or performer whose exemplary career has been marked by character, wisdom and wit’. He certainly deserves it both for his exemplary career and his outspoken and ceaseless LGBT advocacy.

The winners will be announced on January 16th. GALECA was founded in 2008 and consists of around 80 film and TV critics and entertainment journalists. Take a look below for the full list of nominees (via THR):

Gayby Director Jonathan Lisecki To Star In Big Gay Love

Jonathan Lisecki got lots of buzz this year for writing and directing Gayby, but now he’s planning to further his acting career by taking the lead role in a new rom-com, Big Gay Love.

It won’t be Lisecki’s first acting job, as he took a role in Gayby and has also been seen in Wuss and The Limbo Room, although as he comments to Queerty, “People like me don’t usually get to play the lead in a romantic comedy.”

The film is ‘a comedy about a portly gay man, Bob, who overcomes discrimination based on his looks to find love on his own terms’. In this case Bob is a chef who has feelings for his boss, played by Buffy’s Nicholas Brendon. However he has to get past his own body-image issues as well as the way others look at him.

The movie is already shooting with Ringo Le (Saigon Love Story) writing and directing. The hope it’ll be ready for next summer’s film festival.

LGBT Films Get The Nod Amongst Independent Spirit Awards Nominations

The nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards have been announced and LGBT movies have done pretty well. The ISAs are the premiere US awards for independent movies. Many see them as the Oscars for those who don’t have the means to launch a massive, multi-million dollar awards campaign (e.g. most LGBT film), but who have still made a great movie.

Ira Sach’s Keep The Light On – about the tumultuous 10-year relationship between two men, which spirals downwards due to drugs – leads the LGBT contingent with four nominations. They include Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenpay and a Best Male Lead nomination for the wonderful Thure Lindhardt, who plays the film’s leading man, Erik.

Other LGBT interest came with Richard Linklater’s Bernie scoring two nominations. The film, about a closeted undertaker, is up for Best Feature and Best Male Lead (Jack Black). Indeed, Best Male Lead is a pretty gay category, as Wendell Pierce is also up for the award for playing a married man who starts a relationship with a teenage boy in Four (Bradley Cooper, John Hawkes and Matthew McConaughey are also nominated in the same category for playing straight roles, so it’s not totally gay).

Elsewhere, Gayby gained queer filmmaker Johnathan Liseki a Best First Screenplay nomination. The movie is about a straight woman and a gay man who decide to have a baby together.

In the Best Documentary category, How To Survive A Plague scored a nom. The movie looks at the early days of the AIDS crisis and the emergence of activist groups such ACT UP and TAG. Finally, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, which features queer actor Ezra Miller playing a brash gay teen, scored a Best First Feature nomination.

The Independent Spirit Awards will be presented on 23rd February, 2013. You can find all the nominees here.

Set to premiere next month as SxSW in Austin, Texas and based on Jonathan Lisecki’s 2010 Slamdance award-winning short, Gayby is about Jenn and Matt, best friends from college who are now in their thirties. Single by choice, Jenn spends her days teaching hot yoga and running errands for her boss. Matt suffers from comic-book writer’s block and can’t get over his ex-boyfriend. They decide to fulfill a youthful promise to have a child together… the old fashioned way. Can they navigate the serious and unexpected snags they hit as they attempt to get their careers and dating lives back on track in preparation for parenthood? Gayby is an irreverent comedy about friendship growing older, sex, loneliness, and the family you choose. There’s no release set as yet.
